Cisneros 18her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book tells about a young Mexican American girl19up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. One cold rainy evening last October, as a medical student, I was in a hospital, gathering data
for my graduation paper.
Holding a patient questionnaire1some simple yes-or-no questions, I walked towards a 43-year-old patient who lay in bed alone. I was worried whether she would approve of my demands at such a late hour.2, she treated it with consideration. Soon I finished and prepared to leave.3I could stand up, she spoke up in a weak voice asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening.
Then she started talking about herself as well as her4, "My husband died about a year ago,5me the only breadwinner of my family. My pay as a cleaner is6enough for me and my three kids. I don't know what my children would be if something bad happened to me."
I didn't know what to say. I desperately tried to remember the lessons from a communication skills class I had taken years earlier, but my mind was7.
Without realizing it, I had begun8her hand. Now that I didn't have anything to say, I just sat quietly while she talked. That's when it occurred to me that she was not expecting any 9from me. She10wanted me to listen. All 1 did was nod my head as a way of showing my11.
The conversation went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, she stopped talking. "I'm very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problems, but I feel12now. I had no one to13out my problems to. Thank you so much, doctor."
Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine or advanced technology.14, they just need someone with the15to lend an ear and spare a little of their time. For me, that is one of the best things a doctor can do for a patient, doesn't it?

The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added -- a communications blackout caused by solar storms.
After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.
Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.
"The Sun's activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites," said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.
At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections (日冕物質(zhì)拋射) occur in the Sun's atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. "A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications," Professor Harrison added. The risk is the greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.
Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares (太陽耀斑) and explosions as they occur.
Professor Richard Harrison, the lab's director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth "If we have advanced warning, we'll be able to reduce the damage. What you don't want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what's caused the problem," he said.

Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with. It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to. He or she accepts others as equals. A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society, of course, but they do not let their importance go to their heads, and they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world. Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality; sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.
The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth. When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong

    1. A.
is in touch with reality, and doesn’t have any dreams
    2. B.
has some dreams but he is realistic
    3. C.
is honest, open and easy to deal with
    4. D.

My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease (老年癡呆癥).
Upon learning this news, Nancy & I had to decide whether as private citizens we would1this a private matter or we would make this news known in a2way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer3I had my cancer surgeries (外科手術(shù)). We found that after we told it to the public, we were able to4public awareness(意識). We were happy that5many more people went to have a test. They were treated in early stages and able to6to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is7to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater8of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are9by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I’d10to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have11done. I will continue to share12journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch13my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease14, the family often suffers a lot. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this15experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will16it with faith and courage.
At last, let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of17me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home,18that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and endless optimism (樂觀) for its future.
I now begin this19that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright20ahead.
Thank you my friends. May God always bless you.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she8. I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had9around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly10of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled,11it had been held many times by12, childish hands. I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would18it.” Neither of us could stop the19. She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest20of all: her trust and love.

Our thoughts, words, and actions often cause harm to others and to us. Without reconciliation (和解), we cannot deepen our understanding and only cause more suffering. "Beginning Anew" is a(n)1of reconciliation. It involves three steps —— sharing appreciation, expressing2, and expressing hurt and difficulties.
In the first step, we share appreciation. We acknowledge the3qualities of the other person. The second step——expressing regret, is to4with the other person our regrets for the things we have done or said that might have caused him or her5. This requires humility (謙遜), and the6to let go of our own pride. In the third step, we express our own hurt with mindful and loving7without blaming or criticizing. We speak in such a way that the other person can listen and8our words. If we blame the other person, his heart will9and he will not be able to hear us. We ask the other person to help us to understand why he has spoken and acted as he has, causing us so much pain. Perhaps, later, he can share his feelings so that we can understand him more deeply. If a strong10arises in us while we are expressing our suffering, we should simply11and come back to our breathing until the emotion becomes 12 . The other person can13us by following his breathing until we are ready to continue. We can enjoy practicing "Beginning Anew" with our partner, our family, or our friends14. By doing this, we will15misunderstandings from accumulating. Rather, we will take care of them as they arise, as we take care of our children.
