The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation.
All high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become “better” people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don’t go.
But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don’t fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious.College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other’s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graduate school.Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out ------ often encouraged by college administrators.
Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves ----- they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that is a condemnation of the students as a whole, and does not explain all campus unhappiness.Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We’ve been told that young people have to go to college because our economy cannot absorb an army of untrained 18-year-olds.But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained 22-year-olds, either.
Some adventuresome educators and campus watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school.
We_may_have_been_looking_at_all_those_surveysand_statistics_upside_down,_it_seems,_and_through_the_rosy_glow_of_our_own_remembered_college_experiences.Perhaps college does not make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things ----- maybe it is just the other way round, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are only the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy (異端邪說) to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up.
64.According to the passage all of the following statements are true EXCEPT______.
A.about half of the high school graduates continue their studies at school
B.college graduates are believed to be able to earn more money
C.administrators often encourage college students to drop out
D.more and more young people are found unfit for college
65.Which of the following is one of some observers’ opinions?
A.The students expect so much that they are not satisfied with the hard college life.
B.The economic situation is so discouraging that the youth have to attend college.
C.College should improve because of so much campus unhappiness.
D.Colleges provide more chances of good jobs than anywhere else.
66.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Our college experience proves that those surveys are incorrect.
B.The surveys may remind us of our beautiful college experiences.
C.The surveys should all be re-examined according to our college experiences.
D.Our college experiences may make us misunderstand the results of the surveys.
67.What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To argue against the idea that college is the best place for all young people.
B.To put forward an idea that college should not be the first choice.
C.To value young people’s further education in colleges.
D.To persuade young people into working after the completion of high school.

There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ greatly, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual —the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is disabled environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never gain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be shown by the case of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were 3 months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate homes. Peter was brought up by parents of low intelligence in an isolated(孤立的) community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was brought up in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity. The difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they’ve given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark’s IQ was 125.25 points higher than the average and fully 40 points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.
1.This selection can best be titled__________.
A. Measuring Your Intelligence
B. Intelligence and Environment
C. The Case of Peter and Mark
D. How the Brain Influences Intelligence
2. Of the following statements, which best gives the main idea of the passage?
A. Human brains differ greatly.
B. The brain the person is born with is important in determining his intelligence.
C. Environment is vital in determining a person’s intelligence.
D. Persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence.
3. We can infer that people who are “identical”__________.
A. look exactly alike
B. don’t look alike
C. are brought up in the same family
D. are born in the same family
4. The case mentioned in the passage seems to support the conclusion that__________.
A. individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same level
B. an individual’s intelligence is determined only by his environment
C. children brought up under average conditions possess average intelligence
D. lack of opportunity prevents the growth of intelligence
5. The passage suggests that an individual’s IQ__________.
A. can be increased by education
B. is passed down from his parents
C. stays the same throughout his life
D. can be predicted at birth

If you give something to someone for free, will that person value it and use it? Development experts have debated this question for decades. Some think the act of paying causes people to value something and use it more.
Selling necessary health treatments, others argue, may deny them to the people who need them the most.
Consider, for example, chemically treated bed nets, which kill mosquitoes anti protect people against malaria(瘧疾)while they are sleeping. William Easterly, an economist at New York University, believes this is one example of development having gone wrong. In a recent book, Professor Easterly suggests bed nets given free in Africa are often used for the wrong purpose. Yet, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends bed nets be given out free and used by whole communities. The success of a large free bed net campaign in Kenya led the WHO to announce this recommendation
This debate will likely influence social programs in the developing world. Many non-governmental organizations support the creation of self-supporting programs in poor countries. Goods and services are sold for a price to help these programs survive.
According to Rachel Glenerster, who runs a research lab doing development and poverty studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, her several studies have proven that small price changes have a big influence on the number of people who use a product. A price change will reduce the total amount of use of the product as well, she says. She has also found no evidence that the very act of paying for something changes how people use it.
As for a particular product among special populations, some development experts argue that pricing is useful. When it comes to bed nets, Miss Glenerster says research shows no evidence of this. People are just as likely to use a bed net whether they paid for it or not.
1. The debate among experts focuses on .
A. a special use of bed nets in Africa
B. the use of assistance-related products
C. the importance of social programs for the poor
D. a popular way to help the poor
2. According to some experts, certain health treatments .
A. can only be sold to the rich B. should be completely free
C. are too expensive D. are not needed by the poor
3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. The WHO's advice may not be always practical.
B. Many Africans don't know the function of bed nets.
C. The case of Kenya is doubtful.
D. Bed nets given to Africans are poor in quality.
4. What may be the possible change in the social program according to the third paragraph?
A. Some of them may become financially independent.
B. Many of them will not be organized by the government.
C. Some of them will go to developed countries.
D. Most of them will be free of charge.
