試題分析:考查虛擬語(yǔ)氣。 這里是省略了if的含蓄條件句,主句用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí),從句用過(guò)去完成時(shí)。had提前表示假設(shè)的虛擬語(yǔ)氣,對(duì)事實(shí)的假設(shè)與過(guò)去事實(shí)相反,條件從句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用had+過(guò)去分詞,主句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用should/would/could/might+動(dòng)詞原形。根據(jù)句意:如果沒(méi)有我的老師的幫助,我就不可能在比賽中獲得第一名。所以用would。故選C。

The snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, famous in literature and beloved by tourists, initially formed some 11,000 years ago, but will be gone in two decades, according to researchers who say the ice fields on Africa’s highest mountain shrank by 80 percent in the past century.

Lonnie G. Thompson, one professor from Ohio State University, said measurements using modern navigation satellites show that the oldest ice layers on the famous mountain were deposited during an extremely wet period starting about 11,700 years ago.The mountain appears in literature, most notably Ernest Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and some ancient beliefs in Africa hold the mountain to be a sacred place.

But a temperature rise in recent years is destroying the 150-foot-high blocks of ice that gave Kilimanjaro its unique white cap.“The ice will be gone by about 2030,” said Thompson. The disappearing ice already has reduced the amount of water in some Tanzanian rivers and the government fears that when Kilimanjaro is bald of snow the tourists will stop coming.

“Kilimanjaro is the number one foreign currency earner for the government of Tanzania,” said Thompson. “It has its own international airport and some 20,000 tourists every year. The question is how many will come if there are no ice fields on the mountain.”

Africa was not alone in the global drought. Thompson said other records show that civilizations during this period collapsed in India, the Middle East and South America.

Researchers put markers on the ice field blocks in 1962 and Thompson said measurements using satellites show the summit of the ice has been lowered by about 56 feet in 40 years. The margin of the ice also has moved back more than six feet in the past two years, much smaller than before.

“That’s more than two meter’s worth of ice lost from a wall 164 feet (50 meters) high,” said Thompson. “That’s an enormous amount of ice.”

I had been looking forward to my sister Patti’s visit for weeks. I had the whole thing planned. It would be one of our usual short-but-sweet get-togethers: a nice meal, some shopping, an outing with our kids.

When Patti arrived, lunch was cooking on the stove. Everything was perfect. Then, a few minutes later, a terrific clap of thunder rattled the window. A storm had sped in out of nowhere. The lights went out — for the next 12hours.

It seemed like a disaster. Our long-awaited plans! My homemade lunch! Seeing the unfinished pork, we had to eat cold food. We didn’t know what we can do next. The children asked, “Can we watch TV?” “The TV isn’t working.” I explained. So they begged, “Well, how about a video, then?” “How about computer games?” “Can’t you just microwave some popcorn?” I quickly realized just how much we all took electricity for granted.

But as the evening wore on, I also realized I had been taking something else for granted: the power of relationships. The point of my sister’s visit was not that we could go shopping. It didn’t matter whether we took our kids to the zoo. What counted were the people, not the plans.

We all sang old camp songs and put on shadow plays. After the kids eagerly went to bed with their own flashlights, Patti and I brought chairs onto my small front porch (門(mén)廊). At first we talked about our ruined plans. Then we sat back silently, listening to the rain dropping through the trees. I hadn’t sat out there in ages, and night air felt cool. We began to talk about our friends. We planned our parents’ upcoming anniversary party. Our conversation went to places it hadn’t gone in years.

I realized that what Patti and I had been looking forward to most was each other — something that often seemed vague on past short visits. Those get-togethers have always been enjoyable, but I must admit that they tend to melt together in my memory. That night the lights went out, on the other hand, they will burn brightly for a long time.

1.The author planned to do something for her sister’s visit except __________.

A. seeing a film B. doing some shopping

C. cooking a nice meal D. going out with their kids

2.Why did the lights go out?

A. Because thunder rattled the window.

B. Because a storm came.

C. Because someone played a trick on them.

D. Because they planned so.

3.It can be inferred from the passage that__________.

A. their get-togethers were usually long

B. the author prepared a party for Patti’s visit

C. the author and Patti talked a lot this time

D. the lunch was ready when Patti arrived

4.On the night without power, the author was at last.

A. mad B. grateful C. sad D. awful

5.What did the author try to convey through this passage?

A. A lot of things can be done when the electricity is cut off.

B. The plan should be more careful.

C. We should always turn off the lights.

D. What counts are the people, not the plans.

At no time in history has there been such a mass(大規(guī)模的) movement of people from the countryside to the city as is happening now. By the year 2030, it’s estimated(估計(jì)) that more than two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities, twice as many as today. This means that the problems faced by cities today—overcrowding, poor housing, unemployment, poverty(貧窮) and lack of food and water—will be twice as bad, unless we find solutions soon.

Another serious issue is how to provide good transportation for their citizens. Many of the world’s major cities are already struggling with out-of-date transport infrastructures(基本設(shè)施). How can they deal with the additional demands?

London is a good example. Its enlargement was made possible by the invention of the steam engine, which powered the world’s first underground railway. But its transport system are now hopelessly out-of-date and need urgent modernization. London’s future success depends very much on developing better public transport.

Over a million people travel into central London every day from outside the city. They, together with the people who live in London, want a public transport system that is efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. What they often get, however, falls far short of that ideal. Passengers complain about cost and pollution, while businesses worry about the problems their staff have in getting to work on time. Yes, the proportion of London households that own a car grew from just over ten percent in the early 1950s to over sixty percent today.

As the city has become increasingly crowded and polluted, there has been a growing realization that action must be taken soon.

1.The passage is mainly written to tell us that ________.

A. it’s difficult to solve the problem faced by cities today

B. overpopulation causes the problems in cities like London

C. possible solutions to cities’ transport problems will be found soon

D. public transport plays an important role in developments in major cities

2.The underlined word “they” in fourth paragraph refers to _______.

A. the citizens in the city of London

B. those who come to London from other places

C. passengers who make complaints about the cost

D. businesses who are anxious about their staff getting to work late

3.From the passage we know that the mass movement to the city will cause the following problems EXCEPT_____________.

A. poverty B. unemployment

C. better environment D. poor transportation

4.The underlined words “environmentally friendly” is closest in meaning to ________.

A. pleasant and nonpolluting B. cheap and punctual

C. quick and straight D. fair and convenient

5.We can infer that in the following paragraph the writer would most probably deal with ______.

A. traffic jams in London streets

B. London’s future in train and air travel

C. possible solutions to London’s traffic problems

D. the improvement of the citizen’s living conditions
