The other day, as I walked to school, I passed small construction area. It was not far away in my school. I notice a man bringing a bunch of things: shoes, blankets, some canned food, and clothing. Perhaps the items were gathered from his family and some of his friend. He started laying it down for people to take. Certainly, I was curious about what things would be going. But I rushed there after school. I saw that much of the items were taken by others. I have read lots of inspired stories of kindness. This is probably the sweetest act of kindness I’ve been witnessed so far.

Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(評(píng)價(jià))how much you understand of what's going on in class. 【1】 Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to. 2 It's much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

Use any extra time in school.

Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study. It's tempting(誘惑)to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured(松散的) time. 3

Take a break.

4 So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

5

If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most highschool students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day and it seems like you've got an assignment in every subject but gym and lunch, you'll need to devote more time to homework. It's a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule(日程), especially ifyou are involved in sports or activities or have an afterschool job.

A.Pace yourself.

B.Settle down to do homework.

C.And it helps digest important concepts(概念).

D.Most people's attention spans(注意力持續(xù)時(shí)間)aren't very long.

E.Don't be afraid to ask questions about what's expected.

F.Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time.

G.But the more work you can get done in school, the less you'll have to do that night.

【題目】What looks like an angry old man and lives at the bottom of the ocean? It’s the world’s ugliest animal---the blobfish(水滴魚).

Its strange skin is shaped by its habitat. It lives 800 meters below the ocean’s surface, a depth where very few other creatures can survive.

Most fishes have a swim bladder(魚鰾), which is filled with gas and helps them stay afloat. At the depth that the blobfish live, water pressure is 80 times higher than that at higher sea levels and any swim bladder wouldn’t be able to serve its purpose.

The blobfish don’t have a swim bladder because their skin works the same way. It helps them stay afloat without having to use any energy.

The blobfish have a pretty relaxed attitude towards eating. All they do is stay and wait for crabs or lobsters to come by.

Since the blobfish like to eat crabs and lobsters, they often get caught in nets that are used to catch lobsters or crabs and end up dying or being killed. They are not suitable for eating so they are useless for fishermen.

There’s a purpose behind the blobfish’s new title; it has become the new mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, an organization whose purpose is to preserve endangered ugly animals.

“We’ve needed an ugly face for endangered ugly animals for a long time and I’ve been amazed by the public reaction,” said the Society’s Simon Watt. “For too long cute animals have taken the limelight(風(fēng)頭) but now the blobfish will be a voice for those who always get forgotten.”They hope this new face will help the world know that we need to help preserve the populations of ugly animals too.

1The biggest difference between the blobfish and most other fishes is that the blobfish_____ .

A. cannot be eaten by people

B. don’t have a swim bladder

C. only live at high sea levels

D. aren’t active in catching food

2What makes the blobfish stay afloat?

A. Their skin. B. Their tail.

C. Their mouth. D. Their swim bladder.

3We can learn from what Simon Watt said that _____ .

A. most ugly animals are in danger

B. the population of the blobfish is increasing

C. the blobfish have attracted the public’s attention

D. people knew nothing about the blobfish in the past

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To discuss the importance of preserving animals.

B. To give the reason for starting an organization.

C. To present the results of a survey.

D. To introduce a special animal.

【題目】Dear Ms. Wang,

I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.

I’ve decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course. I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuouslywas important to them.

So next academic year, Term 1 will be like always: sentences to paragraphing. And Term 2 will work toward the 5-paragraph essay. The final 3 weeks of Term 2 will be reserved tointroduce writing for TOEFL and CEE. By that time, if the students have done their job correctly, then they should be able to write quite well.

As for the Latin course, I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what’s on offer before I actually introduce the course. A number of students already emailed me about the course.

I am sure you don’t understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is. People around the world are interested in what we plan to do. There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course. Please share what I have said with the administration. I want them to understand the importance of this course. The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) isthatI have confidence in our students and in myself. I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin, they are going to be amazed. It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll see you soon.

Yours,

Edward Johnson

The Health Benefits of Journaling

Scientific evidence supports that journaling (or keeping diaries) provides unexpected benefits. The act of writing accesses your left brain, which is analytical and rational. While your left brain is occupied, your right brain is free to create and feel. In sum, writing removes mental blocks and allows you to use all of your brainpower to better understand yourself, others and the world around you. 【1】

Clarify your thoughts and feelings. Do you ever seem all mixed up inside, unsure of what you want or feel? Taking a few minutes to write down your thoughts and emotions will quickly get you in touch with your internal world.

2】 By writing routinely you will get to know what makes you feel happy and confident. You will also become clear about situations and be able to recognize people who will not get on with you important information for your emotional well-being.

Reduce stress. Writing about anger, sadness and other painful emotions helps to release your feelings. 3

Solve problems more effectively. Typically we solve problems from a left-brained, analytical perspective. But sometimes the answer can only be found by involving right-brained creativity and intuition (直覺). 4

Resolve disagreements with others. Writing about misunderstandings rather than worrying about them will help you understand another's point of view. 5

In addition to all of these wonderful benefits, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends and improvements and growth over time.

A. Know yourself better.

B. Achieve goals.

C. People have been studying whether the emotional release brings better sleep.

D.Writing affords the opportunity for unexpected solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems.

E. By doing so you will feel calmer and be able to stay in the present.

F. Begin journaling and begin experiencing the following benefits.

G. And you just may come up with a sensible resolution to the conflict.

【題目】Most drinks stating that they are fruit flavored contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.

"Shoppers need to check the labels before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production is highly competitive. 【1】 It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked."

Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores. 2 Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

_3 Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial color1 s, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained ly no strawberries at all.

_4_ Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading. _ 5 Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights."

A. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.

B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

C. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

D. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

F. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.
