In 1971, readers around the world were astonished by some photographs which appeared in newspapers. Hidden deep in the rainforests of an island in the Philippines, was an ethnic (種族的)  36 called the Tasaday. Not until that moment did anyone have any   37   of these people. They didn’t have an agricultural economy; they hunted animals and   38  fruit from the plants in the rainforest. They carried tools made of stone, lived in   39  and wore clothes made of leaves. Unknown until 1971, they   40  became world famous. After that, there were TV   41 and books about them; people said their simple lives showed that human beings could be good and kind if they were not  42 by modern life. Then after 1974 the region was closed by the government and the world   43  about them.
In 1986, a Swiss journalist, Oswald Iten, decided to visit the Tasaday. The journey   44  thick rainforests and across rivers was hard and dangerous. Mr. Iten was   45  killed by the soldiers, villagers and businessmen who wanted to take the wood from the rainforest. Finally, Mr. Iten   46  and found the caves of the Tasaday   47 . The people were living in nearby huts and they were all   48  jeans and T-shirts, not leaves. He thought that perhaps they were not an ethnic minority   49  .
When he   50  to Switzerland, Mr. Iten wrote about the Tasaday people in the newspapers. He said he thought that they were just ordinary farmers, poor, but not   51  from anyone else. He believed that in 1971, the government told “the Tasaday” to   52  they were native people from thousands of years ago, so that tourists---and money---would start   53  into the region.
One group of experts said that they really were people who had no   54  with modern life before 1971; another group said they were just   55  the part. So who are these people, really? Perhaps we’ll never really be sure.

DJs (disc jockeys) are the people who play and present music on the radio, or in nightclub. A VJ (video jockey) is a person who introduces music videos on television.
VJs were first seen on television in the early 1980s when MTV went on the air. As MTV caught on, and the audience for music videos expanded, a variety of other music video channels started broadcasting. In addition to rock music, there were channels for people who were into alternative kinds of music, such as country music, light rock, and R & B, and all of these channels needed VJs. By the 1990s, international music video channels like Channel V in Asia and VIVA in Europe had started.
The VJs for the new international stations had to be chosen carefully. Although some VJs did shows focused on small audiences and showed mostly local content, other VJs presented shows for international viewers. These VJs, and the material they presented, needed to be popular in several different cultures.
One successful international VJ in Asia is Asha Gill. She is from Malaysia, but parents and grandparents are from India, France, and England. She speaks three languages and has fans across Asia, from Japan to the United Arab Emirates.
Another VJ who has made a big hit in Asia is Lili. She is actually a computer-animated VJ on MTV Asia. An actress wearing special computer equipment makes Lili move like a puppet. The actress also talks for Lili, and her shows can be seen in five languages.

A town in Oxfordshire has become the first in the UK to have biomethane(生物甲烷)gas from human waste piped to their homes for gas central heating and cooking.
Up to 200 families in Didcot now receive the gas via the national gas power system. Head of energy and technology at British Gas,Martin Orrill, said customers wouldn’t notice any difference as the gas is purified to the highest standard and has no smell. The gas is produced at a sewage(污物) treatment works in Didcot.
The entire process takes only less than three weeks, with the sewage being collected and sent first to settlement tanks. The solid waste material is then fed into digesters, where anaerobic bacteria(厭氧菌)digest the sewage, with the aid of enzymes(酶)to speed up the process. The digestion process produces methane, which can be burned to drive machines(甲烷)to produce electricity,or can be purified and fed into the gas network and piped to homes and businesses. British Gas says supplying the gas rather than electricity is far more efficient since around two-thirds of the energy is lost in producing electricity.
Partners in the Didcot project,British Gas,Scotia Gas Network, and Thames Water, all hope to expand the process to other towns, and other companies such as Ecotricity and United Utilities have also announced biomethane projects being planned. One of these projects in Manchester could be supplying 500 homes with biomethane by mid next year. Another British Gas project in Suffolk will provide gas from digestion of brewery(啤酒廠)waste to around 235 families.
The Didcot project cost£25 million and was influenced by promises of government aids aimed at encouraging companies to develop renewable technologies. An EU directive means the UK must ensure at least 15 percent of its energy is from renewable sources by 2020.
The UK produces about 1.73 million tons of sewage annually. If all sewage treatment works in the UK were fitted with the technology, they could supply gas for up to 350, 000 families.

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration(登記)card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.
With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”.  But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.
小題1: The underlined words in this passage means to “______”.
A.be ready to help othersB.make good use of one’s friends
C.be a little ahead of othersD.gain something at other’s expense

A.While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare.
B.In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you’re living in the hotel.
C.The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to registration of their working hours.
D.The workers are always honest with their working hours.
小題3:We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.the Finnish society is of very high moral (道德) level
B.there are many loopholes in everyday life in Finland
C.in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anything
D.everyone in Finland is like a gentleman, for they have faith in themselves
小題4:Which of the following is the best title of the passage ?
A.Life in FinlandB.A Society with “Foolish” People
C.What a LifeD.Honest accounts of the Finns

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother’s Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it ---- those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother’s Day. But there’s more to the story.
The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother’s Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn’t really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis stared a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil
War. The US isn’t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother’s Day and celebrating Mother’s Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy(喜劇), that is exactly what happens.
Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical(典型的) American way of life, except for one thing-h(huán)e looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!
The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.
Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic(經(jīng)典).
