第二節(jié) 讀寫(xiě)任務(wù)(共1小題,滿分25分)
閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。
Robert Fredy was general manager of a large hotel in Ashbury Park, New Jersey. One cold day when he stopped his car at a traffic light, Stephen Pearman, an out-of-work taxi driver, walked up to earn some change by washing his windshield(擋風(fēng)玻璃). Like many motorists who try to keep the beggars off, Fredy turned on the wipers to show he wasn’t interested.
Pearman put his head close to the window. “Come on, mister. Give me a chance. I need a job.” He said. Something in Stephen Pearman’s voice moved Robert Fredy. He handed Pearman a business card and told him to call if he was serious.
Two days later, 29-year-old Pearman appeared in the manager’s office of the big hotel. Fredy gave him a job and housing and lent him pocket money while training him.
Today, Pearman works full time setting up the hotel’s dining halls for business meetings. In the past two years, he has found a flat, married and rapaid Fredy’s loans.
“Mr. Fredy gave me a second chance,” says Pearman, “And I took advantage of it. ”
“It’s the courage and strong belief in his eyes that motivated me to do so. He asked for a chance rather than just money,” Fredy says. “I don’t hand my business card to just anybody. But I’m glad I did in this case.”

Version One:
With the help of Fredy, Pearman, after unemployment, seized the second chance to obtain a full time job and succeed in his job again with his persistence and optimism in pursuing better life.
So inspired and encouraged did I feel after reading Pearman’s story, which tells me the importance of seizing the second chance after we suffer some setbacks. Don’t lose heart when in trouble. Just remember living is about taking opportunities as they arise. As long as we are persevering and confident enough, we can achieve.
I’m speaking from my sister’s experience. Jenny, a talented college student, made high grades all through school. Unexpectedly, she failed to obtain the scholarship of a famous American University and miss the job offer of a distinguished international company. However, she could face her failure correctly without blaming the fate. She reapplied another 3 American Universities later and finally she was admitted into one of the eight colleges of the Ivy League.
Through the above cases, I strongly hold the view that: Whether one can seize the opportunities is vital to the success. Along with confidence and courage, I can make it. I am confident that a bright future is awaiting me.
Version One:
The story is about an unemployed man, named Pearman, got a job and succeeded in his life. The boss, Fredy, offered him the precious second chance because Pearman himself never lost courage and hope to life.
Pearman’s experience makes me realize that sometimes we have to go through hardness and endure poor situations, but as long as we cling to hope and face the difficulties with courage, we may get another chance to make ourselves successful. The first chance may turn to a failure. But our strong belief and persistence will help us have another one.
What happened to my cousin brother proved this is true. He has a gift in painting so he took part in the entrance exams of a top fine art college. He got a high mark for his painting work, but he was rejected because of his poor English. He didn’t abandon his target. On the contrary, he spent a year working on English day and night. A year later, he fulfilled his dream.
As a young student, I have a long way to go, and it can’t be always smooth. However difficult the life will be, I’ll never lose my heart. I’m sure if I stick to my dream, I’ll certainly have my own “second chance”.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。
In junior high school, one of my classmates, Ethan, was addicted to TV. This boy simply knew everything about such pop shows as Who’s the Boss?
Then one day Ethan’s mother made him an offer in order to draw him back to his school subjects. She promised that she would give him $200 if he could go a full month without watching any TV. None of us thought Ethan could do it, but he did quit TV. His mom paid him $200. He went out and bought a TV, the biggest he could find.
In recent years, hundreds of schools have carried out experiments with paying kids with cash for showing up or getting good grades. All school kids admire this trend. But it upsets adults. Teachers say that we are rewarding kids for doing what they should be doing of their own will.Psychologists warn that money can actually make kids perform worse by making the act of learning cheap. The debate has become a typical battle over why our kids are not learning at the rate they should be despite decades of reforms and budget increases.

When I was a teenager, my dad did everything he could to advise me against becoming a brewer(啤酒制造者). He didn’t even want me anywhere near a vat(釀酒用的桶). So I did as he asked. I got good grades and went to Harvard.
In the second year, I began to realize that I’d never done anything but go to school. So, at 24 I decided to drop out (輟學(xué))for some time. Obviously, my parents didn’t think this was a great idea. But I felt strongly that one can’t wait till he is 65 to do what he wants to in life. Having worked for 2 years, I went back to Harvard to continue my study.
After graduation, I got a highly-paid job in Boston. After working there five years, I wondered, “Is this what I want to be doing when I’m 50?” At that time, Americans spent good money on beer in low quality. Why not make good beer for Americans? I thought.
I decided to quit my job to become a brewer. When I told Dad, he was astonished, but in the end he supported me. Six weeks later, at the Great American Beer Festival, my Sam Adams Boston Lager(淡啤酒) won the top prize for American beer. In the end I was destined(注定) to be a brewer. My advice to the young is simple: decide by yourselves not your seniors what you should do for a life when you are young.

China bans free plastic bags
CHINA began a crackdown on plastic bags, banning production of thin bags and forbidding supermarkets and shops from handing them out free, Tuesday, June 1, 2008.
Chinese people use up to 3 billion plastic bags a day and the country has to refine 5 million tons of oil every year to make plastics used for packaging, according to a report on the Website of China Trade News, and fails to get rid of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, the State Council said in a notice posted on the Central Government’s Website.
“Our country consumes huge amounts of plastic bags every year. While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, waste of energy and resources, because of too much use and inadequate recycling,” it said.
Worries about pollution are growing among ordinary citizens, as years of breakneck growth has a very bad effect on the country’s air and water, but the new ban may not be universally welcomed.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。
Beijing is set to lift its12-year-old ban on fireworks for the traditional Spring Festival holidays, probably starting from next Chinese Lunar New Year in January 2006.
Zhou Jidong, director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the Beijing municipal government(市政府), told a press conference last Thursday that his office has completed the draft(草案) regulations on firework safety supervision.
Under the draft regulations , setting off fireworks will be allowed in the capital city’s eight downtown districts from the Eve of the Lunar New Year to Lantern Festival 15 days later. When the draft regulations were posted on the municipal government’s website for suggestions, local residents gave a total of 969 pieces of advice, with 70 per cent in favour of lifting the ban. Related surveys suggest local people who want to light fireworks during Spring Festival range from 50.4 per cent to 86.3 per cent.
In fact, the voice of opposition and criticism has never ended since the municipal government introduced the ban in 1993, considering pollution, noise, fire worries and personal injuries caused by letting off fireworks.
Opponents accused the government of introducing the ban only for the sake of facilitating its management role while disregarding the will of the people. Worse, they say, the ban threatened to break down the age—old traditions of celebrating Spring Festival among Chinese people.
Partly due to this endless objection, about 106 out of a total 282 Chinese cities that had followed Beijing’s lead in banning fireworks have already dropped the ban.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。
We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could decide your ideal school. What would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said.
Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some older pupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyone to go when they want to switch off from the lessons.
Richard form USA: I think it would be great to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. I’m sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours.
David from UK: The school dinners are absolutely disgusting. There is a little shop called a “tuck shop” which we can go to in our breaks but it just sells rubbish. I’d like to be able to buy fruit and healthy snacks.
Hannah from Australia: My school environment is great – especially the sports facilities. We’ve got a swimming pool and tennis courts. It’s teachers I’d change. I think they should give us more freedom and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it’s ridiculous that we have to wear a school uniform.
Sam form Mexico: I’d like clean toilets and showers, a big library, big lockers and a restaurant. Not much to ask for.
