Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and various creatures that live in this part of the sea. 1.

The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. 2. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.

3. At first, I was quite frightened — mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. 4. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.

I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team was very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. 5.

A. The ROV was great fun.

B. The ROV was difficult to operate.

C. However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water.

D. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore.

E. The only thing I disliked was collecting information about the sea.

F. The experience will definitely help me work harder to become a scientist.

G. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on boat.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地標(biāo))in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

1.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place they usually _________.

A. describe the place carefully

B. refer to recognizable buildings and places

C. show him a map of the place

D. tell him the names of the streets

2.Which is the place where people measure distance in time?

A. New York. B. Kansas.

C. Los Angeles. D. Iowa.

3.People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________.

A. in order to save time

B. as a test

C. for fun

D. so as to be polite

4.What can we infer from the text?

A. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

B. People have similar understandings of politeness.

C. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

1.The author had _______ kind(s) of fears when she was a child.

A.three B.two C.one D.none

2._______ would scare the author at night.

A.Wild animals and enemies

B.Moving curtains

C.A very low sound in the floor

D.Wild imagination

3.When she went to some other places, she would _______.

A.walk away without others

B.follow others closely

C.take a bus by herself

D.make sure not to take a wrong bus

4.Which of the following would be possibly true when she was a child

A.She was always the leader of the others.

B.She always got poor grades.

C.She thought being popular among people was important.

D.She was not liked by others at all.

When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet (圖章) ring. They were the "in" thing and it seemed every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials(姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven.

What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being "replaced". We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so most of the " new" stuff (東西) we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my ring. My ring was new.

Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.

Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents' when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. " You'll recognize this one," she said, smiling.

Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They'd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me.

1.The underlined word "in" in the first paragraph probably means "_____".

A. fashionable B. available

C. practical D. renewable

2. When she got the ring back, the writer was about _____.

A. 13 years old B. 15 years old

C. 26 years old D. 28 years old

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer's family moved several times.

B. The writer never stopped looking for her ring.

C. The writer's ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.

D. The writer lost her ring in the morning when she took it off.

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. My New Ring B. Lost and Found

C. Lost and Replaced D. An Expensive Ring

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆西藏拉薩中學(xué)高三下期月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

閱讀理解。

There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power.

First, the radioactive (有放射性的) material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.

Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes non-radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak (泄漏) or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection (不贊成,反對(duì)) to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.

Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster is extremely high.

1.Which of the following is not true?

A.It is likely that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.

B.It is not usual for radioactive materials to be conveyed across land.

C.The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.

D.Nuclear wastes remain risky in most cases for many years.

2.The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are __________.

A.easy B.impossible

C.reasonable D.ineffective

3.What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The power station is a place that frees from danger.

B.The dangers of nuclear energy could be prevented.

C.The general public are opposed to the nuclear program.

D.By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to lead to much worry.

4.What is this passage about?

A.Uses of nuclear power.

B.Dangers from nuclear power.

C.Public anger at nuclear power.

D.Accidents caused by nuclear power.
