[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat, if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.
[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.
[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亞大紅腸) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.
[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!
小題1:What is the “5-second rule” mentioned in the first paragraph? (no more than 18 words)
——————————————————————————————————

[1] People of all ages and races can serve as volunteers. They work in various organizations without pay. Volunteering improves your life and the lives of others. You can meet new people and make a positive difference in the world.
[2] Volunteers generally work with others either as part of a team completing a project or caring for other people such as patients in a nursing home or helping children through an organization such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Volunteers should be generally cheerful and easy to work with and have a positive attitude even if things are not satisfactory in their own lives.
[3] Some volunteers organize events or groups of people to work on various projects. Without their good organizational skills, these projects might not happen. For example, if you’re the Parent-Teacher Association President for your school, you will be responsible for organizing the individual committees in your school. If you have good organizational skills, volunteering will become less stressful and you can give back to your community in the way you intended.
[4] Volunteers have to be willing to devote a certain amount of hours each week or month depending on the situation. It is necessary for them to go through testing or training before they begin volunteering. The best volunteers do what they say they’re going to do and show up when they say they’re going to be there unless there are situations beyond their control.
[5] Good volunteers see the good in others, whether it’s the people they’re working with or the people they’re serving. These volunteers generally go beyond what they’re asked to do because they want to get to know the people they’re serving. They go beyond surface relationships by remembering names, information and stories told to them. Volunteers that are healthy and well-balanced will bring that feeling to the environment, and the people they’re helping will be affected.

[1]Everyone has dreams and they obey the rules that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future.
[2]The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pains and illnesses. Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!
[3]The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships--- intimate, personal or social--- with the people we like and respect, and who like and respect us in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.
[4]The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and elevated faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.
[5]The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again. You want to completely be free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.

[1]Many people complain about their work day by day, however, we have some suggestions for you. Just keep all these in mind, and you are sure to feel happier than before.
[2]☆People Need You. There's always someone who relies on you, no matter what type of work you do. The public rely on the toilet cleaners to keep the toilets fresh. The public rely on the trash men to remove their unwanted garbage. So recognize that there are always those who need you to do a good job. Please don't let them down.
[3]☆Plan Out Your Day. Often, we'll find a day disappears as quickly as it arrives because we get bogged down with minor chores and emergencies that keep appearing. These minor fires mean we don't get to tackle the much bigger fires, which would give us a lot more satisfaction.
[4]What's the best way to deal with this? Plan out your day. At the end of your shift, decide what “major fires” need putting out tomorrow. Plan out when you'll tackle these major issues, and then stick to that plan no matter what little embers may pop up.
[5]☆Do something different. Consistency is a good thing to have at work. But what isn't good to have is the same routine, day after day. It drags you down, it makes you tired early in the day, and it kills any motivation you have for the job.
[6]Do something different! Step out of your routine and take a fresh look at things. Inject some variety into your days, even if it's something as simple as taking a different route to work.
[7]☆______________. It amazes me sometimes how little some people actually know about their work colleagues. Your colleagues are not robots. They're other human beings too, breathing and talking and trying to make a living, just like you. So treat them as human beings. Get to know them a bit better each day by asking a different question, or by starting a new topic. Share experiences with them, and they'll realize that you're human too, and that it's OK to talk with each other about something other than work.

[1]One Friday night in May 2010, Oliver and Ione Kleven heard angry shouts coming from their front lawn(草坪). Ione, 65, stepped onto the porch(門廊) and saw two men in dark clothes struggling with something on the ground—right where she and her grandson had planted a flower bed the weekend before.
[2] “Go fight somewhere else!” she shouted, worried her plants would getdamaged. At the sound of her voice, the face of a boy appeared from beneath the two men. He looked 14. “They’re trying to kill me!” the boy screamed. Ione ran toward them and, without hesitation, caught the boy’s arm, pulling him out.
[3] “Leave him alone!” she shouted. When the men stood up, Ione saw what looked like a sharp object in one man’s hand. When she turned back toward the boy, he was moaning(呻吟) in pain and holding his stomach. The attackers began to move in on the boy again when Ione’s husband shouted: “Get lost!” The two men walked quickly and quietly across the street and drove off in a dark car.
[4]“I have to get to the hospital!” the boy cried. He lifted his shirt, and Ione could see a bloody wound on his stomach. Oliver hugged the trembling(發(fā)抖的) boy while Ione caught her cell phone and car keys inside the house. She handed the phone to Oliver. “Call 911,” she told him. “I’m going after them.” Ione took off but was unable to find the car.
[5]The Klevens then learned what had happened. Earlier that night, as the boy waited for his parents to pick him up from the high school across the street from the Klevens’ house, two men approached and demanded his wallet. When he refused, one of the men hit him in the face. The boy ran across the street. The men caught up with him, and one hurt him in the back and stomach with a sharp knife.
