The easy way out isn’t always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough (面團) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work, I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the ‘living thing’ was and why it was there. I don’t know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Doug or me.
The writer’s purpose in writing this story is ________.
A. to tell an interesting experience
B. to show the easiest way out of a difficulty
C. to describe the trouble facing a newly married woman
D. to explain the difficulty of learning to cook from books
Why did the woman’s attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?
A. The canned orange had gone bad.
B. She didn’t use the right kind of flour.
C. The cookbook was hard to understand.
D. She did not follow the directions closely.
Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?
A. She didn’t see the use of keeping it
B. She meant to joke with her husband.
C. She didn’t want her husband to see it.
D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.
What made the dough in the rubbish bin look frightening?
A. The rising and falling movement.
B. The strange-looking marks.
C. Its shape.
D. Its size.
When Doug went out the third time, the woman looked out of the window because she was ________.
A. surprised at his being interested in the bin
B. afraid that he would discover her secret
C. unhappy that he didn't enjoy the meal
D. curious to know what disturbed him

Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern skill has changed this. Either man will stop war, or war will stop man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological( 細菌的 ) or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in stopping war, there would be no danger for us. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (大屠殺 ),but by arbitration (仲裁)in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意識形態(tài))would prevent war. I believe this to be a complete error. All ideologies are based upon beliefs without proof which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Those people who believe them are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict (沖突) nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the H?bomb.
From the first paragraph we can know that ____.
A. we may face greater threat from weapons
B. bacteriological or chemical weapons are less dangerous than nuclear weapons
C. man’s idea of victory has changed
D. dangerous weapons are forbidden in modern society
According to the author,______.
A. it is impossible to live without war
B. the difference between East and West will lead to war
C. war must be stopped if man wants to survive
D. war will be stopped by modern skill
The author believes that the only way to stop war is to____.
A. stop nuclear weapons
B. settle international issues through agreements
C. destroy bacteriological and chemical weapons
D. let the stronger side take over the world
The last paragraph suggests that______.
A. nuclear war will definitely not take place
B. real agreements have been now reached
C. world opinion is still divided on nuclear war
D. man is beginning to realize that nuclear war is his greatest enemy
Which of the following words can best describe the author’s feeling in writing this passage?

After successfully serving their terms for 4 years, military service men and women are given the choice to stay in the military or return to civilian life.
For some, having to readjust to civilian life is one of the most challenging assignments our returning soldiers and marines(水兵)will ever to undertake. While people may think readjusting should be simple, they must take into consideration all physical and mental stress our servicemen went through.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder(創(chuàng)傷后應急障礙), or PTSD, is a mental disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as military combat(打仗).
Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time. In the military, the marines are given a two-week course on how to return to civilian life.
Unfortunately, some will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own, or may even get worse over time. These individual may develop PTSD.
People who suffer from PTSD have difficulty sleeping because they are often reliving the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, and feel deserted or often stand off, and these symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly damage the person’s daily life.

The other day, I received a most unexpected message in response to one of my essays: I am so proud of you and all you have accomplished. I shared your opinion …
It was signed Margaret Leibfried, who was my English teacher — a teacher who appeared at a vital (關鍵) point in my life and helped me believe that I could become a writer.
Thirty years ago, I entered high school as an introvert (性格內(nèi)向的人) made all the more shy because I was the school’s only nonwhite student. I always felt in danger of being swept away by a sea of tall white athletes. I spent a lot of time alone, reading and writing stories, hoping to escape being teased.
Ms. Leibfried taught American literature and composition grammar, which involved the usual memorizing vocabulary, but also, thrillingly, reading novels.
Thrilling to me, that is. Many of my classmates expressed dislike for novels because they were “not real.” For once, I didn’t care what they thought. Ms. Leibfried seemed to notice my interest in both reading and writing, and she took the time to make me feel less shy; she even offered me reading suggestions, like one of her favorite novels, “The Bell Jar.”
That year’s big project was a book report, to be read aloud to the class. However, Ms. Leibfried suggested I do something “a little different.” Instead of a report, I chose a passage from “The Bell Jar” that I considered as the best to recite.
The morning of the presentations, I remember my hands sweating so badly as I walked to the front of the class that I kept my hands crossed, so I wouldn’t wipe them on my blouse.
When I finished, to my surprise, the class applauded. “Marie has picked out a particularly sensitive piece of writing and delivered it beautifully,” Ms. Leibfried said, smiling. I felt, maybe for the first time, confident.
1.What was the author’s high school life like before she met Ms. Leibfried?
A.Lonely. |
B.Exciting. |
C.Wild. |
D.Busy |
2.In Paragraph 5, the author mainly tells us .
A.how she cared what her classmates thought |
B.when she became interested in “The Bell Jar” |
C.why many of her classmates disliked novels |
D.how Ms. Leibfried helped and encouraged her |
3.Why did Ms. Leibfried ask the author to recite a passage in front of the class?
A.To test whether she had a good memory. |
B.To make her earn the respect of her classmates. |
C.To help deepen her understanding of “The Bell Jar.” |
D.To guide her to build a good relationship with others. |
4.How did the author feel when she made the presentation?
A.Comfortable. |
B.sad. |
C.Nervous. |
D.Confident. |
5.What was the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To express her thanks to her teacher. |
B.To discuss the issue of racial prejudice (偏見). |
C.To introduce one of her favorite books. |
D.To suggest the ways to gain confidence. |
