Nuclearpowered aircraft carriers are considered one of the most important marine weapons in the
20th century. So far, only two countries in the world, the USA and France, have ever produced them.
But these fearful fighting machines are about to enter Asia.
The US Navy said last month that one of its nine nuclearpowered aircraft carriers will be sent to
Japan to replace the diesel(柴油)powered carrier Kitty Hawk in 2008. In an agreement on October
30, the two countries also planned to level up their military (軍事的) cooperation and the USA called
for Japan to take a larger role in alliance military moves.
It will be the first time that a nuclearpowered carrier is based in Japan. Bombed by US forces in
World War? at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is the only world country to have been attacked by
a nuclear weapon. Therefore, the citizens are highly sensitive to where nuclearpowered weapons are
based.
"A radiation leak at Yokosuka would kill 100,000 people as far away as Tokyo, and could cause
billions of dollars in damage," said Masahiko Goto, leader of a protest group in Yokosuka. His group
has collected more than 300,000 signatures of people across Japan opposed to the nuclear carrier.
The 44 year old Kitty Hawk, the US Navy's oldest active ship, has been based in Yokosuka since
1998. It had returned to the US to be decommissioned in 2008. The new carrier, yet to be unveiled,_
will travel faster, be capable of supporting longer operations and carry with it the Navy's most modern
technology.
Experts pointed that this change is not only to strengthen the USJapan military alliance but also to
keep the military power of China and North Korea within limits. However, even Japanese experts
don't believe that the two countries are threats to the region.
"There is no need for Japan to have a nuclear carrier as defense," said Tetsuo Maeda, an
international relations professor at Tokyo International University. He said that the change of ship
indicates an increased military capability in the region, much more than what is needed.
1. With such a formidable weapon to enter its country, Japanese citizens ________.
A. are aware of its benefits to the country

Teachers have long said that success is its own reward. But these days, some students are finding that
good grades can bring them cash and luxury gifts.
In at least a dozen states this school year, students who bring home top marks can expect more than just
thankfulness.
The most ambitious experiment began in September, when seven states - Arkansas, Alabama,
Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington-won spots in an Mobil-funded
program that, in most cases, pays students $100 for each passing grade on advanced placement (AP)
college-prep exams.
It's an effort to get low-income and minority students interested in the courses, says Tommie Sue
Anthony, president of the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science. "We still have students
who are not sure of the value, who are not willing to take the courses," she says. "Probably the motivation will make a difference with those students."
Gregg Fleisher of the National Math and Science Initiative, which runs the seven-state program, says
the effort is modeled on a program adopted by Dallas in the 1995-96 school year that saw AP
course-taking jump obviously. That program is now statewide.
While many educators would be against offering kids cash for good grades, Fleisher and others say
the idea is simple: "It's an encouragement to get them to basically make the right decision and choose a
more strict class," he says. "This teaches them that if they work at something very hard and have a lot of
support, they can do something they didn't think they could do."
An analysis of the Texas program last month by Cornell economist C. Kirabo Jackson found that it
linked to a 30% rise in the number of students with high SAT and ACT scores and an 8% rise in
college-going students.(Notes: 1.SAT: 美國(guó)學(xué)術(shù)能力評(píng)估考試;2. ACT: 美國(guó)大學(xué)入學(xué)考試.)

3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Students who top at college - prep exams get $ 100.
B. The program didn't have any effect on student's achievements.
C. The program has been going on half a dozen states this year.
D. The program was probably first adopted by Dallas.

When you leave school, you_can_breathe_a_sigh_of_relief_and_leave_learning_behind, right?
Wrong! Learning should last a lifetime. You exercise your body to stay strong, and you should exercise
your mind to stay sharp.

An English idiom says, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." But scientists have discovered that
isn't true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend
has begun in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University.
They can spend a Saturday or Sunday hearing four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by a top
university professor. One of the original participants said, "It's like a health club for the brain." Also,
universities like MIT have made all of their courses and lectures available online for free! Libraries offer
learning programs too. With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn!
Learning is a habit.Don't leave it behind after you leave school. On the website lifehack.org, author
Scott Young mentions several things to help you.
Always have a book. It doesn't matter if you read fast or slow. Just read.If you read just one book a
week, you'll read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you'll gain!
Practice it. As you read, do something with what you've learned. Don't just enjoy the mental exercise.
Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it!
Make a "to learn" list. Compose a "to learn" list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano, or cook French food. Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it. Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You'll not only help others but also
understand what you've learned.
1. What's the best title for this passage?
A. Make learning last a lifetime.

There are three branches of medicine. One is called "doctor medicine" or "scientific medicine".
Scientific doctors try to observe sickness,  look for logical pattern,  and then find out how the human
body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed
to date from the 4th century BC. Although nowadays it is successful,  in the ancient this approach(方
法) probably did not cure many patients.
The second kind of medicine is called "natural cures" or "folk medicine",  in which less educated
people try to cure sickness with various herbs(中草藥). These folk healers also use observation and
logic,  but they are not so aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work,
and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished(興起) long before the development of scientific
medicine and was more successful in ancient times.
The third kind is called "health spas" or "faith healing". Sometimes this may be as simple as touching
the holy man and being immediately healed. Other times,  a magician may make you a magic charm,
or say a spell(咒語(yǔ)),  to cure you. Some religious groups organize healing shrines(圣壇) for the sick.
In these places people rest,  get plenty of sleep,  eat healthy food,  drink water instead of wine,  and
exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests(牧師) and pray to the gods. If you are feeling
depressed or you have been working too hard,  going to these places may be just the right thing to
make you feel better.
1. Doctor medicine_________.
A. has a longer history than folk medicine
B. has been practiced for around 2, 400 years
C. bases its treatments on observation and logic
D. was very successful in curing sicknesses in ancient times
2. According to the passage,  which of the following is NOT used in health spas?
A. Magic power
B. Various herbs
C. Religious faith
D. A healthy life style
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. Folk healers choose different herbs to cure diseases without any sound basis.
B. People who practice folk medicine need lots of formal education on herbs.
C.The success of folk medicine led to the development of doctor medicine.
D.Natural cures worked better than scientific medicine in ancient times.
4. The author's primary purpose in this passage is to_______________.
A. describe different types of medicine
B. argue for the importance of medicine in health care
C.show the important role religion plays in medical treatments
D.compare the educational background of three different types of patients

閱讀以下1-5段材料,然后從A-f中選出各段的主題。有一項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
A. A good teacher acts in class
B. Acting: repetition of fixed words and movements
C. Teaching: a student-centered creative process
D. Similarities between teaching and acting
E. ( = AB) Differences between teaching and acting
F. ( = AC) A good teacher, not necessarily a good actor

1   To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the
attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice
which is fully under your control; and you must be a- ble to act what you are teaching, In order to make
its meaning clear.
2   Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit unmoved before his class: he stands
the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, his hands and fingers to help him in his
explanations, and his face to express feeling. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and
the musical note if his voice always changing according to what he is talking a- bout.
3   The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he will indeed
be able to act well in the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the
actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words
each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually
fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on
the stage.
4     A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they
ask questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so, the teacher therefore
has to suit his act to the needs of his audience. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he
goes along.
5    As a good teacher presently, you must take your au- dience as your friends, take care of them, help
them and give them enough freedom and space. I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class
but were unable to take part in a stage play be- cause their brains wouldn't keep discipline: they could not
keep strictly to what another had written.

Compared to adults, children seem to be moving constantly. So it's no surprise that most parents
who are quizzed about their child's physical activity level describe their children as fairly active. But a
new study of nearly 2,000 British school children suggests that many parents overestimate the amount
of physical activity their children are really getting.
The researchers equipped 1,892 British school children, ages 9 and 10, with accelerometers that
measure all physical activity during a given time period. The research, known as the Speedy study
collected the exercise data from children at 92 schools in Norfolk, England, between April and July
2007.
A child was regarded inactive if he or she recorded less than an hour a day of physical activity.
Although the majority of children studied were getting enough physical activity, a_sizable_minority_of_

an hour of physical activity each day.
But if you asked the parents of the inactive children to describe their child's activity level, the vast
majority-80 percent-described their children as fairly or very physically active, according to the findings
published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.Interestingly, the children themselves had
more awareness about their lack of physical activity.Overall,40 percent of children overestimated their
physical activity.
But it wasn't the parents of overweight children who were most likely to guess wrong about physical
activity levels. The parents who were most out of touch about their child's physical fitness were more
likely to have children who were slim.Parents of girls were also more likely to overestimate physical
activity. The researchers noted that parents should be educated about the importance of physical activity
for children even if the child is not overweight.
"Parents of slim children appear to assume that their children are adequately  active, "  the study
authors reported."Increasing awareness regarding health benefits of physical activity beyond weight
control might help have a correct idea of physical activity levels and encourage behavior change."
1. According to the Speedy study, what kind of children can be judged physically inactive?
A. Slim children.
B. Children with less than an hour a day of physical activity.
C. Overweight children.
D. Children out of touch with their parents for a long time.

The research carried out by the University of Bari in Italy could help prove hospitals who are
accused of wasting money on art and decoration as it suggests a pleasant environment helps patients
ease discomfort and pain.
A team headed by Professor Marina de Tommaso at the Neurophysiopathology Pain Unit asked
a group of men and women to pick the 20 paintings they considered most ugly and most beautiful
from a selection of 300 works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli. They
were then asked to look at either the beautiful paintings, or the ugly painting, or a blank panel(板)
while the team put a short laser pulse at their hand, creating a sensation as if they had been stuck
by a pin. The subjects rated the pain as being a third less intense(劇烈的) while they were viewing
the beautiful paintings, compared with when looking at the ugly paintings or the blank panel.
Electrodes(電極) measuring the brain's electrical activity also confirmed a reduced response to the
pain when the subject looked at beautiful paintings.
While distractions, such as music, are known to reduce pain in hospital patients, Prof de Tommaso
says this is the first result to show that beauty plays a part.
The findings, reported in New Scientist, also go a long way to show that beautiful surroundings could
aid the healing process.
"Hospitals have been designed to be functional, but we think that their artistic aspects should be
taken into account too," said the neurologist. "Beauty obviously offers a distraction that ugly paintings
do not. But at least there is no suggestion that ugly surroundings make the pain worse. I think these
results show that more research is needed into the field how a beautiful environment can alleviate
suffering."
Pictures they liked included Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and Botticellis Birth of Venus.
Pictures they found ugly included works by Pablo Picasso, the Italian 20th century artist Anonio
Bueno and Columbian Fernando Botero. "These people were not art experts so some of the
pictures they found ugly would be considered masterpieces by the art world," said Prof de Tommaso.
1. The underlined word "alleviate" in the fifth paragraph probably means "_______".
A. cure
B. relieve
C. improve
D. kill
2. Which of the following is TURE about the view of Prof Marina de Tommaso?
A. Beautiful surroundings could help to heal sufferings completely.
B. Hospitals must take their artistic aspects into consideration first.
C. Ugly surroundings will surely make the pain worse.
D. Both music and beauty can reduce pain in hospital patients.
3. From the last paragraph, we know that _______.
A. some artists' paintings were beautiful, so they were masterpieces
B. only art experts could judge they were masterpieces or not, though ugly
C. the artists mentioned above were not really art masters.
D. some of them were art masters, while others were not.
4. Which of the following is the suitable title for the passage?

B. Ugly paintings could be masterpieces.
C. More research should be done in the field.
