"Tear'em apart ! ""Kill the fool! Murder the referee(裁判)!”
These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let's not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us.It has been shown that words having certain connotation(涵義)may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior.I see the term “opponent” as one of those words.Perhaps the time has come to delete(刪除) it from sports terrors.
The dictionary meaning of the term "opponent" is "enemy"; "one who opposes your interests." Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may be the most important, and every action, no matter how rude, may be considered acceptable.I remember an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player's request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player started to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then shouted, "Are they wet enough now?"
In the heat of battle players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences(后果) that such a move might have on anyone in their way.I have also seen a player reacting to his opponent's intentional and illegal blocking by deliberately(故意地) hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the play.Off the court, they are good friends.Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which goes against normal behavior.
Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升)the game to the level where it belongs, thereby setting an example to the rest of the sporting worlD. Replacing the term "opponent" with "associate" could be an ideal way to start.
The dictionary meaning of the term "associate" is" colleague", "friend", "companion".Think about it! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term "associate" rather than "opponent".

As you are probably aware, the latest job markets news isn’t good: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think. That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job staff-turnover(人員流動)data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations(辭職), and retirements. (Yes, people are retiring even in this economy.)In both good times and bad, staff-turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2014, when the economy was still booming along, job growth was only 132,000, while staff-turn over was 4.7 million!
And as it turns out, even today—with job growth near zero—over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.
I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher. It would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from(and compete for). And it's true that there are currently more people applying for each available job opening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.
But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look;learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that 2.7 million people who wanted and were available for work hadn’t hunted for it within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed.
So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up.Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.
1.The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate____.
A. takes job opportunities from people
B. prevents many people from changing careers
C. does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening
D. should not stop people from looking for a job
2.What does the author say about overall job growth?
A. It increases people’s confidence in the economy.
B. It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.
C. It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.
D. It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.
3.What is the key to finding a job according to the author?
A. Education B. Intelligence
C. Experience D. Persistence
4.What do we learn about The Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment data?
A.They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.
B.They don’t include those who have stopped looking for a job.
C.They provide the public with the latest information.
D.They warn of the structural problems in the economy.

Death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death.Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(復(fù)活).Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues.Death is then unchangeable and final.
Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep.By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陳代謝), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.
To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called KetA. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in.For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自發(fā)的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.
1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.
A. his most important organs are damaged.
B. he still has the possibility of getting back to life.
C. he cannot avoid final death.
D. he is still very much alive
2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.
A. slow down the body’s metabolism.
B. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.
C. cool the organism.
D. delay the coming of biological death.
3.How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?
A. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.
B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.
C. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.
D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.
4.All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that__________.
A. her heart beat again.
B. she regained her normal breath.
C. she rejected a penicillin injection.
D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.

Please don’t Hope.Decide!
While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had an experience which occurred merely two feet away from me.
Trying to locate my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags.He stopped right next to me to greet his family.
First he kissed his three children one by one and said, “It’s nice to see you.I missed you so much!” Then he hugged his wife, “I’ve saved the best for last!” giving her the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. They stared at each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant they reminded me of a couple who recently got married, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be.
Full of admiration, I asked, “Wow! How long have you two been married?” “Being together for fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” He replied, without stopping staring at his lovely wife’s face.“Well, then, how long have you been away?” I asked. “Two whole days!” “Two days?” I was surprised. By the intensity(強(qiáng)度) of the greeting, I had assumed he’d been gone for at least several weeks---if not months.I knew my expression betrayed me, so I turned away my eyes and murmured offhandedly(隨便的,不假思索的), “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after so long!”
The man suddenly stopped smiling and looked at me straight in the eye. With forcefulness he told me something that left me a different person.“Don’t hope, friend…decide!” Then he smiled again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!”
With that, he and his family turned and went away together.
I was still watching that man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What are you looking at?” Without hesitation, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, “My future!”
1.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The man talked with the author, with his eyes still fixed on his wife’ face.
B. After being away for several weeks, the man missed his family very much.
C. It was fourteen years since the couple had got married.
D. Their three kids reminded the author of a couple who recently got married.
2.By saying “my expression betrayed me” (in Paragraph 4), the author means that _______.
A. his expression was not faithful to him
B. he didn’t believe in his expression any more
C. the man sensed his real feelings from his expression
D. he failed to express his ideas to the man
3.From the passage, we can infer that __________.
A. the experience may be easily forgotten by the author
B. the author will live a passionate life from now on
C. the author will be away from his family and hug them passionately upon his return
D. Americans prefer to save the best for last
