Produce bought from the supermarket greengrocer sections is full of color,while many stores even use fine mist sprays (噴劑)to give a just picked look.This supermarket theatre convinces shoppers to pay an extra payment for food that they believe is good for their family's health as well as being tasty.However,the reality is that these vegetables and fruit may well have been held in storage for a month,while they then sit in the fridge at home for days before being eaten.
Over the days, they gradually  deteriorate,slowly losing some of the nutrients associated with leafy greens and fruit.By contrast,frozen vegetables and fruit are chilled(冷藏)soon after harvest and so keep higher levels of vitamins and antioxidants until they are eaten.
Two teams,one from Leatherhead Food Research and the other from the University of Chester,carried out 40tests to measure nutrient levels in produce which had been sitting in a fridge for three days and the frozen equivalent (相等物).The findings show that eating newly picked produce is the healthiest option; however,frozen food can be almost as good and is often better than items sold as"fresh".Leatherhead's Dr Rachel Burch said:"We must ignore the mistaken opinion that fresh food is always better for us than frozen food."
These results show that frozen food can be nutritionally comparable to fresh produce.Direct comparison:In two out of three cases frozen fruit and vegetable scored better on antioxidant-type compounds including Vitamin C,polyphenols and anthocyanins (多酚和花青素),a study found.Her team found frozen broccoli had higher levels of Vitamin C.However,fresh food scored better on polyphenols,which are thought to help prevent cancer.
32.What does the passage mainly tell us?D
A.Fresh food is better than frozen food
B.Frozen food might cause cancer.
C.Frozen food is as good as fresh food
D.Frozen food is better than"fresh"food.
33.Why do some supermarkets spray fine mist on fruit and vegetables?C
A.To keep them in good quality
B.To make them taste good.
C.To make them look fresh
D.To make them sell cheaply.
34.What does the underlined word"deteriorate"in Paragraph 3mean?A
A.Grow worse

1.At first sight the planet Mars(火星)does not appear very welcoming to any kind of life.It has very little oxygen and water,the temperature at night is below 50degrees and winds of 100miles (161kilometers)per hour cause severe dust storms.However,the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it at some time in the past,and it is believed that there would be enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melted.Although there is no life on the Mars now,some scientists think there may have been some form of life a long time ago.At that time,the planet had active volcanoes(火山); the atmosphere was thicker and warmer; and there was water.In fact,in some ways the Mars may have been similar to the Earth,where life exists.
Some people believe that the Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced.The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the Sun's heat in the planet's atmosphere.With warmth,water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳),simple plants could begin to grow.These plants could slowly make the Mars fit to live on.It is judged that the whole process might take between 100,000and 200,000years.In the meantime,people could begin to live on the planet in a special closed environment.They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on Mars and the problems connected with living there.

33.According to the passage,the planet Mars has noAon it.
A.a(chǎn)nimals
B.mountains
C.dust
D.winds
34.What is the topic of Paragraph 2?C
A.Certain gases should be used to warm Mars.
B.Plants should be grown to make Mars fit to live on.
C.Mars could support life with right conditions in the future.
D.People could live on Mars in a special closed environment.
35.The most suitable title for the passage isD.
A.No Life on Mars
B.A Study of Mars
C.The Future conditions on Mars

11.Automation refers to the introduction of electronic control and automatic operation of productive machinery. It reduces the human factors, mental and physical,in production, and is designed to make possible the manufacture of more goods with fewer workers. The development of automation in American industry has been called the"Second Industrial Revolution".
Labour's concern over automation arises from uncertainty about the effects on employment, and fears of major changes in jobs.In the main, labour has taken the view that resistance to technical change is unfruitful.Eventually, the result of automation may well be an increase in employment, since it is expected that vast industries will grow up around manufacturing, maintaining, and repairing automation equipment. The interest of labour lies in bringing about the transition with a minimum of inconvenience and distress to the workers involved. Also, union spokesmen emphasize that the benefit of the increased production and lower costs made possible by automation should be shared by workers in the form of higher wages, more leisure, and improved living standards.
To protect the interests of their members in the era of automation, unions have adopted a number of new policies. One of these is the promotion of supplementary unemployment benefit plans. It is emphasized that since the employer involved in such a plan has a direct financial interest in preventing unemployment,he will have a strong drive for planning new installations so as to cause the least possible problems in jobs and job assignments. Some unions are working for dismissal pay agreements, requiring that permanently dismissed workers be paid a sum of money based on length of service.Another approach is the idea of the"improvement factor",which calls for wage increases based on increases in productivity. It is possible, however, that labour will rely mainly on reduction in working hours in order to gain a full share in the fruits of automation.(in no more than 8 words)
78.Automation makes it possible tomanufacture more goods with fewer workers.
79.At first, two things people worried about automation wereeffect on employment and major changes in jobs

81.What is the last passage mainly talking about?Union's policy concerning the protection of union members.

15.Bar codes are one way that the U.S.Postal Service streamlines mail of the wrong hands.A letter that comes without a bar code or cancelled stamp might not have been processed by the U.S.Postal Service and it might indicate that something's fishy.(可疑的)Can you decode a bar code the way the U.S.Postal Service can?
Here's How
1.Here's how to read the bar code on your letter.
•Most U.S.letter bar codes have bars of two lengths:long and short.
•Every bar code should start and end with long bars; ignore those.
•Look at the rest of the bars in groups of five,starting with the second bar.Each group of five represents one digit.(數(shù)字)
2.Here's how to figure out what those digits are.
•The five bars stand for one of these numbers:7,4,2,1,0.
•Some genius figured out that this range would allow you to come up with the digits 0to 9.You do it by adding the numbers of the long bars together.
Say you have this bar code:
Here,the 4and 2places have long bars.Added together,they total 6,so this bar code stands for 6.
Say you have this bar code:
The 1and 0places have long bars.Added together,they total 1,so this bar code stands for 1.
Say you have this bar code:
The 7and 4pieces have long bars.Added together,they total 11,but there is no 11in this system,so this bar code stands for 0.
3.Now let's look at the bar code on a letter.

Ignore the first and last bars of the whole bar code.Then look at the next 20bars to find the zip code (0680).The next two sets of five bars give your mail carrier's number (10153).The rest of the bars in the bar code indicate the house or maibox number.The house number is 32.

63.Why does US Postal Service just use five numbers for the five bars?D
A.They are easy to read.            B.They are ohosen only by accident.
C.They can stand for the long bars. D.They are enough to make ten digits.
64.Which of the following bar codes otands for"7"according to the text?B

16.A volcanic eruption in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe.Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in airports.
Grimsvom is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvom different is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川) of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it,which then forms a layer(層)of water between the glacier and the volcano. This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable. As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(巖漿) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happened today.
Now,airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash.According to KLM,one of Europe's biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it.Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane's engines, causing damage to the plane.
The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp glass-like
rocks all over the countryside.Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating
ash-covered grass or the sharp object.
