In the 1960s, people asked about your astrological sign(星相). In the 1990s, they wanted to know your website (網(wǎng)址). These days, having a web address is almost as important as a street address. Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.
Think of your home page as the starting point of your website. Like the table of contents of a book or a magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.
While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout (版面設(shè)計(jì)). At the top of the page is a banner(大標(biāo)題) GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site. Pictures, texts, and links to other websites follow.
Before you start building your site, do some planning. Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site. Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.
While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Start simply If you are too ambitious (雄心勃勃的) at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add to your site.
Less is better Most people don't like to read a lot of text online. Break it into small pieces.
Smaller is better Most people connect to the Internet with a modem (調(diào)制解調(diào)器). Since it can take a long time to download large image files, keep the file sizes small.

In my living room, there is a plaque(匾) that advises me to “Bloom(開(kāi)花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner”(lunch). In case you don't know, poke greens are a weedtype plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.
Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Cerlification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the oneandonly steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom(傳家寶), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.
