Blind tasting is a very strange activity. Contrary to what many people imagine, it has nothing to do with blindfolds. It involves tasting a wine without seeing the label and it can deliver shocking surprises. I tasted seven champagnes (香檳) blind with a group of professionals recently. There was a shock when they discovered the wine most of them preferred carried a label they regarded as their least favorite. That sort of result is especially common with champagne, the most image-driven rather than quality-driven wine of all. But it happens all the time when wine is tasted blind.

Because I’m interested in how wines really taste instead of how I think they should, I taste wine blind as often as I can, especially when assessing similar young wines. But blind tasting when you know absolutely nothing about the wine in front of you is something completely different. The most difficult Master of Wine exams include three sessions during which you have a dozen glasses in front of you and nothing more helpful than a printed exam paper asking you to identify each wine as closely as possible, and assess its quality.

Now that the MW is behind me, I taste wine completely blind only very rarely, and never in public. So my blind tastings these days are round the dinner table with good friends and once a year when I act as a judge, with Hugh Johnson, in the Oxford vs Cambridge wine-tasting competition. This is the most extraordinary match, always held before the Boat Race but taken just as seriously nowadays. This year’s taste-off took place at the end of last month, as usual in the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall in London.

1.Which of the following is true about Blind tasting?

A. Blind tasting is the professional way to identify a wine.

B. Blind tasting usually has the right result.

C. Blind tasting means tasting a wine with one’s eyes covered.

D. Blind tasting is tasting a wine without seeing the label.

2.Why did the professionals get shocked at the result of their blind tasting?

A. They got all the results correctly.

B. They didn’t recognize their favorite at all.

C. The writer made no mistakes.

D. Champagnes can not be tasted blind.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. The Boat Race is taken more seriously than the wine race.

B. The Oxford v Cambridge wine-tasting competition is held annually.

C. I didn’t act as a judge last year.

D. Pall Mall is chosen as the competition place for the first time.

During last summer holiday, I found part-time job, worked in a toothbrush factory at night. Not until I experienced it did I realized that it was no easy job. I went to work when my parents were going to bed. On the morning, when my parents were going to work, I came to home to sleep.

This backward schedule was very tough for me that I often felt tiring. But I am glad that I had this forgettable experience. Not only is it kind of fun to “rise and shine” along with the moon or stars, but also I learn to appreciate the hard work of those which are working while the rest of us are sleeping.

The American believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollyhood comedy(喜劇), that is exactly what happens.

Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical(典型的) American way of life, except for one thing— he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!

The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearance. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.

Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic(經(jīng)典).

The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!

1. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To tell the reader about the American government

B. To discuss the Americans’ ideas about the President

C. To make a comparison(對(duì)比) between Dave and other film.

D. To introduce a new film to the reader.

2.Who plays the role of the President in the film?

A. Sigourney Weaver B. Kevin Kline

C. Bill Mitchell D. Ivan Reitman

3.The underlined word “one” in the 3rd paragraph refers to __________.

A. the President B. the director

C. an actor D. a look-alike

4. Which of the following is best supported by the text?

A. The author makes fun of the President.

B. The author thinks highly of the film

C. The author is a fan of Hollywood comedies.

D. The author wishes to become the American President.

Gabby Douglas stood beneath the Rio Olympic Arena, still in her Team USA leotard, trying hard to understand how she had become the most unpatriotic athlete in Rio. Tears filled in her eyes. She tried hard to talk but no words came out. Her pauses were long and uncomfortable.

“I’ve been trying to stay off the Internet because there’s so much negativity,” she said. The attacks against her have been everywhere these last few days. The bullies blamed her for not putting her hand over her heart while the US national song played. Besides, some other people attacked her for not jumping up and cheering hard enough for team-mates at the all-around final. All of this prompted her mother, Natalie Hawkins, to tell Reuters this weekend, that Douglas is “heartbroken”.

It showed on Sunday, in Douglas’s final performance of this Olympics and maybe in the Games ever. Douglas finished sixth in the uneven bars, far from the medal stand she owned four years ago in London, and shook her head, confused. What had she done wrong? Nothing made sense.

“I mean, you do [Olympics] for your country, and you do it for yourself, how have I offended them? What have I done? I was standing in respect for USA. I’m coming out there representing them to the best of my abilities, so how would I be in disrespect?

1.Why was Douglas heartbroken?

A. Because she lost the chance to take part in the Olympic Games.

B. Because she didn’t win any medal.

C. Because she was criticized by many people for her unintentional behaviors.

D. Because she made a big mistake.

2.Which sports event do you think Douglas is most likely to be in?

A. gymnastics B. high jump

C. dance D. triathlon

3.Which of the following is an improper behavior?

A. Putting hands over one’s heart while the national song played.

C. Taking part in the Olympic Games for one’s country.
