Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn't it?In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity.

However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can't do because of their weightless environment, and that's very sad. What's worse, they can't even let their sadness show—because it's impossible to cry in zero gravity.

Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears don't flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go—they just stick to your eyes.

In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks.“Tears,” he said, “don't fall off your eye... They just kind of stay there.”

Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that's not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts' eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. “My right eye is painful like crazy.” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.

Since gravity doesn't work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait—“When the tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float around,”astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic.

There are lots of small things—things like crying—that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can't talk to each other directly. They also can't eat or drink in normal ways. They can't even burp(打隔), because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up(嘔吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center.

Thus, perhaps it's only space explorers who can honestly say:“Gravity, you're the best.”

1.What can we conclude from Paragraphs 2 and 3?

A.Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space.

B.Astronauts produce fewer tears in space.

C.Tears produced in space flow down more slowly.

D.Tears produced in space don't flow downward.

2.What effect do tears have on astronauts?

A.They cause physical pain.

B.They bring comfort to them.

C.They make their vision clearer.

D.They float around and cause trouble.

3.What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?

A.Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.

B.Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around.

C.Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes.

D.Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.

4.What's the last but one paragraph mainly about?

A.Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space.

B.Other basic things that are difficult to do in space.

C.Why burping is impossible in space.

D.Things that humans can't do without gravity.

According to the UN Intergovernmental Panel (專家咨詢組) on Climate Change, global temperatures have risen by approximately 0.6℃ in the past century, caused mainly by emissions of greenhouse gases produced by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.Temperatures are to increase between 1.6℃ and 5.8℃ in the next century, accompanied by sea level rise and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events.

The best available evidence suggests that climate changes since the 1970s may already be causing over 150,000 deaths annually, and that greenhouse gas emissions would increase disease burdens in the coming decades. The risks are concentrated in the poorest population, who have contributed least to the problem.

The Kyoto Protocol (京都議定書) is signed by 128 nations, and commits the participating industrialized countries to cutting emissions of greenhouse gases by over 5% below 1990 level by the period of 2008?2012.

“Over 600 thousand people died in weather?related disasters in the 1990s.Temperature and rainfall influence the rates of diseases and infections including malaria, and malnutrition, which together cause over 3.5 million deaths a year. The Kyoto Protocol is the first step towards protecting the climate system, which exerts such a strong influence on our health”,said Dr Kerstin Leitner,Assistant Director?General for Sustainable Development and Healthy Environments.

While acting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is also essential to protect vulnerable (脆弱的) communities from the effects of climate changes.WHO works to promote measures such as protection from malaria and other climate sensitive diseases, and reliable access to clean water and sanitation, for people in the most vulnerable developing countries.Increasing disease control efforts will also help to protect current and future generations from the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions.

1.According to the passage, what is the reason for the rise of global temperatures?

A.The burning of fossil fuels.

B.The rise of sea level.

C.Extreme weather disasters.

D.The emissions of greenhouse gases.

2.Which of the following is true?

A.Weather?related disasters caused over 3.5 million deaths.

B.The climate system has a deep impact on human health.

C.The members of the Kyoto Protocol are all industrialized countries.

D.The poorest population are to blame because they contribute least to the problem.

3.In order to protect communities, WHO takes some measures except________.

A.preventing diseases caused by climate changes

B.helping to provide clean water

C.a(chǎn)iding to offer sanitation

D.gaining access to vulnerable developing countries

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Climate changes and the effects on human health.

B.Climate changes cause over 15,000 deaths annually.

C.Who promotes measures such as protection from malaria.

D.The Kyoto Protocol helps to protect human health.

Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 1. But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t difficult. 2. This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

3. Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh. 4. When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish. 5. First, clean it and season it with your choice

of spices(調(diào)料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one

pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready to serve.

A. Do not buy it.

B. The easiest is to steam it.

C. This is how you can do it.

D. It just requires a little knowledge.

E. The fish will go bad within hours.

F. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(靜電) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

1. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?

A. He got an older model than he had expected.

B. He couldn’t return it when it was broken.

C. He could have bought it at a lower price.

D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.

2. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1?

A. ended all their programs B. provided fewer channels

C. changed to commercials D. showed all-night movies

3. How did the author finally get this TV set working again?

A. By shaking and hitting it B. By turning it on and off

C. By switching channels D. By having it repaired

4. How does the author sound when telling the story?

A. Curious B. Anxious

C. Cautious D. Humorous
