Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world – Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey – rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First , the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal(信號).This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that. ” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building(but only after an earthquake, of course.)

Helen Keller
For the first nineteen months of her life, Helen Keller was like other pretty happy babies. Then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and hearing. Because she could not hear what other people were saying, the child could not learn to speak. For the next seven years, she lived in a world of darkness, without sounds or words.
The person who changed Helen’s world was her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who entered her life on March 3, 1887. Miss Sullivan had accepted a job, which seemed impossible. She agreed to teach a blind child who had never leaned to act like a human being, because no one had over been able to guide her in any way. No one could control Helen. She acted like a young animal, rushing widely around, throwing things, and hitting anyone whom she could reach. Who could believe that such a child could be taught?
But Anne Sullivan was a very special kind of teacher. She had been blind during part of her own childhood and had learned to read Braille, a system of writing that uses raised dots which can be felt by the fingers of a blind person. She had learned to see again after seven operations, but she had never forgotten the experience of being blind.
Miss Sullivan understood Helen. She loved her and believed she could teach her.

C
Elephants are the largest land animals and they need plenty of living span. They have seasonal migration(遷徙) routes. As human populations rise, elephant land is being cleared for agriculture and other kinds of development.
When animals are effectively trapped on small areas of land, it restricts the gene pool and also results in a shortage of food. Where elephant reserves (保護區(qū) ) border agricultural areas, elephants are often attracted to leave parks to attack crops and barns. Only the strongest walls will stop an adult elephant, so farmers have great difficulty protecting their fields.
In India, elephants don’t only attack for food. Some even have developed a taste for rice beer. In Assam, elephant-human conflict has resulted in the death of more than 150 people and 200 elephants in two years.
Poverty leads to the killing of elephants for meat. If people don’t have enough food and their governments cannot afford to enforce poaching(偷獵) bans, it’s not difficult to predict the outcome.
Ivory comes from elephant tusks, which can grow to be 3 metres long. Both male and female African elephants have large tusks.
Most new ivory comes from Africa and is sold as a high status material in Asian countries such as Thailand, mainland China and Japan. It can fetch $150 a pound and is carved to make decorations, chopsticks and ink stamps(印章). The conservation priority(重點) here is to change public attitudes.
In some countries in southern Africa, where conservation efforts have been successful, there is not enough room for a growing elephant population and animals have to be killed. A CITES meeting in November 2002 ruled that Botswana, Namibia and South Africa may sell stock-piled(庫存的) ivory, starting in 2004.
Many conservationists are convinced that this will fuel the demand for ivory and lead to more illegal poaching, they say it is almost impossible to tell legal from poached ivory. The governments argue that the sales will be used to fund conservation work.
64. Which of the following isn’t the result of smaller elephant land?
A. Seasonal migration.                        B. Elephant-human conflict.
C. Restricting the gene pool.                          D. Shortage of food.
65. The most important thing to protect elephants is _______.
A. to build strongest walls
B. to sell stock-piled ivory instead of illegal ivory
C. to enforce poaching bans
D. to change people’s ideas
66. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The killing of dephants for meat.
B. The ban of the trade in African elephant ivory.
C. The selling of stock-piled ivory.
D. The sales to fund conservation work.
67. According to the passage, we can infer that_______.
A. farmers have trouble protecting their field since no walls can stop an adult elephant.
B. if the government could help solve poverty, there would be less killing of elephants.
C. only male elephants in Africa have tusks as long as 3 meters.
D. since there is not enough room for a growing elephant population, there is no need to ban poaching all over Africa.

Who owns the sea? The ships of all countries sail in the open seas. Not long ago, all countries could fish and hunt in the oceans as they pleased. But now, the countries using the sea must work together to protect the animal life in the seas.
In 1870, there were millions of valuable fur seals in the Berling Sea. Ships came from all over the world to kill them.
Man wanted the animals’ fur and their oil from their bodies. By 1930, only about 130,000 seals were left there in the seas and the oceans. Even the hunters themselves knew that something had to be done to protect them, otherwise the seals would die out or disappear from the earth forever.
Four countries owned the land near the seals’ northern home. In 1911, these countries began plans to control seal—hunting. The governments of these four countries, Japan, Russia, Canada and the United States, where the animals rested and gave birth to their young, formulated a policy that only male seals that didn’t have mates were to be divided among the four governments.
Today, large herds of seals swim in the Berling sea again. By working together, the four countries mentioned above have saved the seals in the seas they share.
