About ten years ago, I was on a plane going west, and a young woman boarded and sat across the aisle (過道) from me. I ___21____ her for two reasons. About halfway through the flight she ___24____ over and told me she was going to Tucson to enter rehab (進(jìn)行康復(fù)治療). She ___25___ to share her life story with me. She had been working as a dancer in a nightclub. That ___26____ had led her down a dark ____27____ to drugs and alcohol. As I listened to her story. I was ____28____ at all she had gone through. A few years later, I got a ___31____ in the mail saying, “Wow, it’s been years since we met on that plane. It is ___32____ how you touched my life.” She went on to tell me that she had ____33____ to stay away from drugs, and had been working for a radio station. She felt she had achieved things she could not have ____34___ that day on the plane. We agreed to set up a time to get ___35___.
When I saw her, she was ____36____ the attractive young woman I remembered. She told me that that little ___37___ we had had turned her life around. We were talking about engagement when my boyfriend, Jack, had to go to war. I was so afraid of losing him; the only way I could stay sane(保持清醒) was to dance. I became very good and critics praised me, but I could feel was the ache in my heart, no knowing whether the love of my life would ever return. And then one day a letter from him came:“I have lost my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best you forget me.”
I made my decision there and then I left the city. When I returned I had bought myself a cane(拐杖) and learned to limp convincingly. I told everyone I had been in a car crash and that my leg would never completely heal again. My dancing days were over. No one suspected the story. And I made sure the first person to hear of my accident was a reporter. Then I travelled to the hospital. They had pushed him outside in his wheelchair. I leaned on my cane and limped to him.
I told him he was not the only one who had lost a leg, even if mine were still attached to me. I showed him newspaper clippings of my accident. “ There is a whole life waiting for us out there! And I am not going to carry you—you are going to walk yourself.”
I limped a few steps towards him and showed him what I’d taken out of my pocket.” Now show me you are still a man,” I said. He bent to take his cane and struggled out of that wheelchair. I could see he had not done it before, because he almost fell on his face. But I was not going to help. Finally he managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.
What I showed to him was engagement rings. And I would limp with him for the rest of life.

How many people have I met who have told me about the book that they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many .This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal(排演)and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments .
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families, always making ourselves believe that this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life .
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English:“Have a nice day!” They speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us to enjoy the moment: to value this very day .How often do we say to ourselves, "I'll take up horse-riding(or golf, or sailing)as soon as I get a higher position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position .
When I first became a reporter, I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal(反常的)mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area?I wanted to know .
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure .He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains .
小題1:The first paragraph of the passage tells us that________.
A.we always try to find some time to write a book

D.we always do what we really want to do
小題2:The man (in paragraph 6)left his first job partly because he was_________.
A.in an abnormal stateB.under too much pressure
C.not well paidD.not respected
小題3:What is probably the best title for the passage?
A.Provide Homes For Our FamilyB.Take Up Horse-riding
C.Value This Very DayD.Stay Alive

                                                                              A
Everywhere I go, people are speaking on their cell telephones regardless of their surroundings (環(huán)境) . This happens when people are walking around a lake or through town, or even driving. I have even seen a person attempting to speak on her cell phone while ordering ice cream at Dairy Queen, thus speaking to two people at once.
As the over-spending of technology increases, people begin to take less joy in the simple pleasures of life—joys that don’t cost money—from observing clouds, playing with children to thinking or reading. And it is not just telephones that take the responsibility; too much value is placed on items (物品) from computers to cars. Many things are purchased (購買) merely(僅僅) to show off. Do you really need a cell phone that plays games, shows movies and takes pictures? No, cell phones should be purchased to use in urgent situations. You do not need to use your telephone when you are at someone else’s house or in a restaurant.
Technology and possessions (財(cái)產(chǎn)) do not bring joy. While some technology is necessary, it can get ridiculous(可笑的). Each possession just makes us want more, while simple pleasures can be enjoyed now and then.
Instead of spending our time buying a third television or looking into the newest cell phone models, we should be acting more productively to improve the world by volunteering, for example. Or, we should reconsider playing computer games or taking pictures on our cell phones and read a book or imagine what shapes the clouds are in the sky instead.
