About this trip

John Cabot had set sail looking for a new trade route for Asia, when he landed in Cape Bonavista. Clearly he felt this barren desolate landscape could provide this, so he claimed it for its potential and so began the rise of the British Empire.

Newfoundland is the most easterly point in North America and was Britain’s first overseas colony until 1949, when it became part of Canada. It’s roughly the size of England and Craig’s journey by camper van or RV (recreational vehicle) took in just a small part of the island called the Bonavista Peninsula.

First stop was the tiny fishing port of Keels to stock up for the journey ahead. There’s a long standing love affair between Newfoundlanders and cod. The seas off the Newfoundland coast were once the richest cod fishing grounds in the world, attracting fishermen from all over Europe. Many settled, establishing these coastal villages known locally as outports.

An hour’s drive down the coast is the town of Bonavista, where Craig met up with retired fisherman, Wilson Hayward. He told Craig how the landscape used to lie, and described the peculiarities of the language and accents in the area. There’s a different language in every bay.

With his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, Jeremy Lin (林書豪) finished the New York Knicks' dramatic reversed victory to defeat the Toronto Rapters.

The Knicks have won six games in a row, and Jeremy Lin has put up impressive numbers during the continuous period of competitions. Although the season is still young, the Knicks have reversed course in just one week from the NBA's most disappointing team to a playoff (季后賽) contestant. Lin, not team's high-paid stars, has saved the Knicks season and likely coach D'Antoni's job.

After nearly 15 years of disappointing, sometimes unsuccessful seasons, Madison Square Garden is alive again, and New York City can't stop talking about the Knicks. To put things into perspective, consider this: Just several years back, Knicks fans protested nightly outside of the Garden calling for the team's ownership to fire their resented coach Isiah Thomas.

Now, Madison Square Garden Co. shares are at a record high, the Knicks' average household television rating is up 70 percent since Lin joined the starting lineup (首發(fā)陣容), and jersey sales are increasing very quickly. I watched the Knicks-Lakers game at a bar in Harlem, and have not felt that kind of energy from fans since the great playoff between the Knicks and Miami Heat in the late 1990s.

Beyond the Knicks, Lin may be saving the NBA as well. Just a few months back, the NBA took a massive credibility hit during a multi-month lockout, where the owners did not allow the players to go back to play until they accept the new salary levels. As a consequence, the season did not even begin until Christmas Day. Over the past few years, LeBron James' (勒布朗﹒詹姆斯) relatively long and unpleasant free-agent (自由職業(yè)球員) events, combined with poor play around the league, have angered fans and damaged the league's brand.

Lin is leading a one-week NBA basketball revival. His legendary story has inspired Asian-Americans, increased NBA sales in China, and turned the basketball world upside down.

A.not old yet.        B.not completely grown.                   C.in the development   D.in the early stage

3.The NBA suffered the credibility crisis months ago because____

A.The NBA delayed the season because of players’ wage disagreements

B.the NBA was disappointed at James’ free-agent event.

C.The NBA canceled the basketball match for the coming Christmas

D.James had a bad performance in the basketball court

4.Which one of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.These Knicks’ stars who were paid well saved the Knicks season

B.The Knicks didn’t satisfy its fans for nearly 15 years until this season

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents  because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers .

Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. “I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling (回收利用)?” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

1. The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to       ____.

A. the rapid development of small businesses        B. the opening up of new markets

C. the printing of high quality copies              D. the increased use of the Internet

2. Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is        ____.

A. to encourage printing more quality documents     B. to develop new printers using recycled paper

C. to find new materials for making paper           D. to plant more fast-growing trees

3. Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because      ____.

A. people are concerned about the environment       B. printers in many offices are working overtime

C. small companies need more hard copies            D. they see a growing market for printers

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Computers and Printers                       B. E-mail and the Business World

C. Internet Revolution and Environment          D. Modern Technology and New Markets

In a surprising discovery about where higher life can survive, scientists have found a shrimp -like creature and a jellyfish swimming beneath an Antarctic ice sheet.

About 180 meters below the ice where no light can get through, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes (微生物) could exist.

That’s why a NASA team was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp-like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera’s cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle (觸須) they believe came from a jellyfish.

“We were operating on the presumption that nothing’s there.” said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler. “It was a shrimp you’d enjoy having on your plate.”

“We were just gaga (狂熱的) over it,” he said when talking about the 7.5cm long, orange creature starring in their two-minute video. Technically, it’s not a shrimp. It’s a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is distantly related to the shrimp.

The video is likely to inspire experts to rethink what they know about life in harsh environments. And it has scientists thinking that if shrimp-like creatures can live below 180 meters of Antarctic ice in freezing dark water, what about other cold places? What about Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter?

Cynan Ellis – Evans, a scientist of the British Antarctic Survey called the finding fascinating. He said it was possible the creatures swam in from far away and don’t live there permanently.

But Kim, who is a co-author of the study, doubts it. “The site in West Antarctica is at least 19 km from open seas. Bindschadler drilled a 20 cm-wide hole and was looking at a tiny amount of water. That means it’s unlikely that two creatures swam from great distances and were captured randomly in that small area,” she said.

“Yet scientists were puzzled at what the food source would be for these creatures. While some microbes can make their own food out of chemicals in the ocean, complex life like the shrimp can’t,” Kim said.

“So how do they survive? That’s the key question.” Kim said.

“It’s pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything.” Kim said.

1.. Scientists had believed that harsh environments could only have been populated by ______ .

    A. jellyfish    B. mammals     C. microbes     D. shrimp-like creatures

2. According to Kim, the shrimp-like creature _________ .

    A. swam great distances to Antarctic    B. has always lived in the area

    C. gradually evolved from shrimps       D. has nothing in common with shrimps

3. The finding is significant in that __________.

A. it marks NASA’S first Antarctic biological study

    B. it proves there is marine life in the Antarctic

    C. it could inspire further study of life in harsh environments

    D. it shows that Lyssianasid amphipod is closely related to shrimps

4.. The last three paragraphs suggest that __________.

    A. researchers will look at the places the creatures came from

    B. ice scientists will drill deeper to find more creatures

    C. scientists know very little about the planet they live on

    D. further research will be done about what the creatures live on
