One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions (分量). Studies find
that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size. Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they're piled, even if we already
feel satisfied. See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up 估量) your snacks and
suppers.
Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the
percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years. Fortunately, portions are relatively
simple to control because it's easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat.
Pre-picture portions. Use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick
up your fork or spoon. For example, a half cup of low-fat granola is about the size of your fist. A half cup
of low-fat ice cream equals half an orange.
Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works. First and mostobvious is that you
can't put as much food on, say, a salad plate. But psychologically, you're just not as prone to eat as
heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds.
Have raw vegetables at every meal. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few
calories and lots of nutrients. A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up,
cutting down appetite for the more calorie-dense meat.
Start your meal with soup. Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall
meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients.
Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down. Don't pick it up until you have
thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to
eat less. Remember: Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that
you are no longer hungry.

TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the
sea. Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu's nine little islands is more than five
metres above sea level. Salt water is already entering the country's drinking water supply, as well as damaging
plants that produce fruit and vegetable. Without urgent help, the country's days are numbered.
But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for
its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm
by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark's Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year.
Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times a year. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it
stands, Tuvalu's rising sea level is caused by global warming.
     The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century;
scientists expect it to rise by an extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.
Warmer weather makes glaciers (冰川) melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures
also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about
10-25 cm in the last 100 years.
The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been
increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse
effect, making the planet even warmer. Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will
be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.
Should this come true, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with "climate refugees" looking for somewhere to live.
1. We can infer from the second paragraph the _____.
A. Tuvalu is in danger of being swallowed up by the sea
B. All Tuvalu's islands are about five meters above the sea level
C. Drinking water in Tuvalu has been destroyed
D. Tuvalu is often flooded by storms and waves
2. The author uses Tuvalu and Venice as examples in order to explain _____.
A. they are the first places sinking into the sea
B. they are both sinking into the mud where they stand
C. they will disappear in the future
D. their trouble is caused by global warming
3. What does "climate refugees" mean?
A. People who are forced away from their homeland by climate.
B. Climate changes.
C. Rare animals.
D. Climate effect.
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Tuvalu's nine islands are less than five meters above the sea level.
B. The average global temperature has risen by 1-3 centigrade degrees over the 100 years.
C. The warmer temperature causes the sea level to rise.
D. There will be huge climate changes unless the warming is stopped.

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how
the grizzly bear (灰熊) and mountain lion can cross the road.
"Millions of animals die each year on U.S. roads," the Federal Highway Administration reports. In
fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S. today. The main reason? Roadkill.
"Ecopassages " may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over
and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,"
said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society. But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The
answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an
ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and
around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders (火蜥蜴) and grizzly
bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might
see an animal overpass!
1. The writer uses the example of "ocelots" to show that _______.
A. wild animals have become more dangerous
B. the driving conditions have improved greatly
C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work
D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents
2. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is ________.
A. an underground path for cars
B. a fence built for the safety of the area
C. a bridge for animals to get over a river
D. a path for animals to cross the road
3. When the writer says that animals seem "to be catching on", he means ________.
A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road
B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages
C. animals are crossing the road in groups
D. animals are increasing in number
4. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because ________.
A. wild animals may attack cars
B. wild animals may block the road
C. they may see wild animals in the park
D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages

Africa is home to nearly 700 lakes and rivers. It holds the largest amount of water on earth. Because of
the overuse of the lakes, natural climate changes and other factors (因素), these lakes are disappearing quickly.
Millions of people in Africa depend on water sources like lakes and rivers for their daily water. In other
words, they cannot live without these lakes and rivers. Recent studies by the United Nations show that this
loss of water supply is putting a great pressure on the African population.
In the 1960s, Lake Chad was nearly 83,200 square feet large. In about forty years, it has lost 95% of its
size and it has almost completely dried up. At one time, it was one of the largest lakes in the world, and was
around 960,000 square feet around 6,000 years ago.
The sizes of lakes and rivers and the amount of water have something to do with seasons naturally. But,
pollution and agriculture also play an important part in the loss of water. Many pollutants (污染物) are put into
lakes and rivers so that many lakes and rivers are seriously polluted, and the water may be poisonous (有毒的).
If something isn't done soon about the disappearing lakes and rivers, there will not be enough water for
everyone. Then many people in Africa will face diseases and possible dehydration (脫水).
1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
[     ]
A. There are about 700 lakes and rivers in Africa.
B. Africa is the largest continent on earth.
C. As climate changes, there is less and less water in Africa.
D. Now Africa has less water than before.
2. The figures in the third paragraph show _____.
[     ]
A. more and more lakes are drying up
B. Lake Chad was a large lake
C. how quickly water is being lost in Africa
D. Lake Chad is 4,160 square feet now
3. Which of the following is NOT one of the results of the loss of water in Africa?
[     ]
A. African people's daily life is affected.
B. Agriculture develops quickly.
C. The number of population in Africa will be smaller.
D. Many people will suffer from diseases.
4. What is the purpose of the passage?
[     ]
A. To explain why lakes and rivers are disappearing in Africa.
B. To show people the results of the loss of water in Africa.
C. To call on people to solve the problem of the loss of water in Africa.
D. To tell people how to protect the lakes and rivers in Africa.

Many of the 12,000-plus summer camps in the United States are making greater efforts
to guard against the spread of the new A/H1N1 flu.
Many parents are debating whether they should stop their kids from enjoying the summer
camp because of the new flu.Jing Zhang of New York said she decided to keep her
5-year-old daughter at a local day-care center."Why would I want to spend a fortune on
the summer camp when the risk is the same?" she asked.
Dr.Daniel Rauch, said the risk of catching A/H1N1 flu is only greater in close or group
settings, for instance, when kids sleep near each other in beds, tents or cabins.Unless children
already have potential illness or immunodeficiencies (免疫缺陷),going to summer camps
does not necessarily have a greater risk of catching A/H1N1 flu than going to public spaces
such as playgrounds and shopping centers,he added.
Some camp administrators said they would send any sick child home immediately or
separate them in a clinic and let them play board games while they are being observed.
"We try to create a temporary camping center in the summer and we are very vigilant
about it," said Andy Pritikin, director of Liberty Lake Day Camp in Mansfield, who sent a
child with fever home last week, with full credit to come back later in the summer.
"Parents should know whether camp nurses are available. And if there's only a bottle

Eat less and exercise more-it has long been a magic word for reducing those extra weight. But
now it seems that all the hard work may have been in vain.
Scientists say there are ten other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. They say that
sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants (污染物) can play a role in
weight gain.
Traditionally, people have focused on diet and exercise to solve the problem. However the
scientists from top US and Canadian universities say that other things must be considered.
Lack of sleep could be partly the reason. In recent years, the average night's sleep has dropped
from nine hours to just seven. Sleep shortage changes levels of the hormones (荷爾蒙) that control
food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite.
If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories (卡路里) to cool down or heat up. But if the
temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight. Similarly, studies
have shown that going on the Pill can add to a woman's weight.
Mother nature may also be the reason, with our body shape being partly inherited (遺傳的). The
overweight are also more likely to settle with partners of a similar size. And their children are more
likely to be obese (肥胖的).
And the use of pollutants is on the rise, say the researchers. The man-made chemicals in pesticides
(殺蟲劑) and plastics can lead to weight gain.
Your mother's age and your weight at birth are also important, with older woman more likely to
have obese children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being obese in later life.
We also tend to put on weight as we get older. Finally, giving up smoking can also help pile on the
pounds.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins said there was some evidence supporting poor
diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of obesity.
1. Which is commonly thought to be effective in losing weight?
A. To have operation to cut extra fat.
B. To take pills and avoid fatty food.
C. To sleep less to burn more calories.
D. To have less food and take more exercise.
2. Which of the following factors doesn't lead to overweight?
A. Regular and enough sleep.
B. Comfortable living environment.
C. Not enough physical exercise.
D. harmful chemicals in the food.
3. Which of the following statements would the author agree to?
A. Lack of sleep leads you to take in more food.
B. Unpleasant weather helps you to put on weight.
C. Obese parents are not likely to have fat children.
D. Medicine for blood pressure helps you lose weight.
4. What would women prefer to do to have healthy children?
A. To have only one child.
B. To marry at an older age.
C. To marry a strong husband.
D. To give birth to a baby at younger age.
