Just One Drink
There’s a small cross by the side of Highway 128, near the town of Boonville. If this cross could 1 , it would tell you this sad story:
Seven years ago my brother, Michael, was on a friend’s farm. They decided to go out for dinner. Joe another friend, arrived and 2 to drive–after just one drink.
3 , the four friends traveled the winding road. They didn’t know 4 it would end – nobody did. Suddenly, they changed their direction and swerved (拐進(jìn)) into the 5 lane, colliding with a(n) 6 car.
Back home we were watching E.T. on video in front of a warm fire. Then we went to bed. At 2:00 A.M. a police officer 7 my mom with the 8 news. Michael had been killed.
In the morning, I found my mother and sister 9 . I stood there, 10 . “What’s wrong?” I asked, 11 my sleepy eyes.
Mom took a deep 12 . “Come here…”
Thus began a difficult and tiring journey through grief, where all roads lead to nowhere. It still 13 to remember that day.
The 14 thing that helps is telling my story, hoping you will remember it if you are 15 to get into a car with someone who has had a drink – even just 16 drink.
Joe chose the road to 17 . He was convicted of manslaughter (過(guò)失殺人) and served time. 18 , the real punishment is living with the consequences of his actions. He left us with a(n) 19 in our hearts that will never go away, a nightmare that will haunt him – and us – for the rest of our lives. And a small 20 by the side of Highway 128.

Here's one very simple yet potentially lifechanging advice I first heard from Brian Tracy. 1 Instead use that hour to read books that could improve your life.
If you're in sales, Google or browse Amazon for what other people think are the best and most useful books on improving your sales.
2 . Maybe you want to improve your health, become a more energetic person with a better looking body. Or maybe you want to improve your productivity, your relations or perhaps do some general personal development.
One hour a day is not much. But if you read for one hour a day on weekdays, that's about 260 hours a year. 3 If applied everyone knows what great things and feelings could come into your life this year.
Also, all that cool information and useful advice will start to open up your mind. You will start to see more possibilities in your everyday life.

1. I really don't have the money...
Answer: Visit your local library or search their database if they got a website. Or look for used copies in places like amazon.com or some more local alternative if you're outside of the US.
2. Yeah, ok, but I really don't have the time...
Answer: Buy the books as audio books and listen to them in the car while driving to and from work. Or transfer them to your mp3-player and listen while riding your bike/bus to work or school. Recently selling audio books directly through mp3-downloads have become popular. It's probably something we will see more and more as people and companies discover this easy (and if the technology works) smooth way of shopping.
So start browsing for recommendations on books or ask your friends and colleagues.

A. Now, you might think something like this: |
B. This of course applies to all fields, not just the work related ones. |
C. All these possibilities in your everyday life will help solve the following problems: |
D. And shut of the TV a little earlier and start reading this week. |

I give two examples as to why intelligent life may not actually exist, though I admit that for me, or even for a physicist who devoted his or her entire life to researching and studying the universe, it's shocking to claim that completely no life exists elsewhere.
Keeping that in mind, I'd just like to consider conditions elsewhere in the known universe. You really only need to look at our own solar system or the Earth at certain periods in its own history to appreciate that most places are much worse and much less suitable for life than our mild, watery globe.
So far, space scientists have discovered about seventy planets outside the solar. But it appears that if you wish to have a planet suitable for life, you just have to be very lucky, and the more advanced the life is, the luckier you'll have to be. I'm by no means a space observer, but I can recognize some particularly fortunate breaks we've had on the Earth. For example:
We are, to a degree, at the right distance from the perfect type of star, the one that is big enough to radiate a huge amount of energy, but not so big as to bum itself out quickly. Had our sun been ten times as huge, it would have burnt out completely after only ten million years, instead of ten billion and surely we would not exist. Too near, everything on the Earth would have boiled and withered away; any further, everything would have frozen over.
The universe is a surprising place, and our existence within it is a wonder. If a long and unimaginably complex sequence of events dating back 4.6 billion years or so hadn't happened in a particular manner at a particular time --if, to take just one example, the dinosaurs hadn't been wiped out by a meteor(流星)--we might still be a few centimeters long, with whisker(胡須) and a tail, and you'll be reading this in a cave somewhere.
1.What's the best title for this passage?
A. No Life Exists out of the Earth
B. Seventy Planets Discovered
C. A Place Full of Wonders
D. Perfect Conditions for Life
2.What makes the Earth more suitable for life than other planets in the solar system?
A. The Earth is the only planet that can receive energy from the sun.
B. The sun is at the right distance from us and in proper size.
C. The distance between the planets was neither too long nor too near.
D. The dinosaurs were no longer a threat to the Earth.
3.What does the underlined phrase "withered away" in the 4th paragraph mean?
A. Exploded. B. Expanded. C. Floated away. D. Dried and died.
4.Where does the text probably come from?
A. A history book. B. A magazine. C. A science fiction. D. A famous novel.

_____1.Susan is a big eater. She usually has a lot at every meal. So she wonders whether she could only eat less for the first meal of a day to lose weight.
_____2.Tina is a fat girl who doesn’t like exercise much. She just wants to lose weight by eating less but not doing exercise.
_____3.Maggie is a busy office lady. She usually has to work overtime every day. So she could only have her dinner late at night. She wants to be slimmer so that she could be much more attractive.
_____4. Judy is a fashionable designer. She hopes to have a slim shape as models. She usually doesn’t have any regular meal, but has some snacks when she is hungry.
A.If you eat less for breakfast, you have a lower chance of losing weight. Breakfast is important. It gives the body sufficient energy to sustain itself through the morning, and it also stimulates metabolic (新陳代謝) activity in the body. Metabolism is what consumes fat and what makes us slimmer. So, don’t forget to eat something for the breakfast.
B.If you ate your last meal right before going to bed, the calories accumulated from this meal could be twice the amount accumulated from a same meal if you ate it another time during the day.
C.Many people stop doing exercise when they eat less. When you do this, your body will burn less fat. So even if people take in less calories, they get rid of less too. The balance is then unchanged.
D.People gain fat not from the food they eat, but from the number of calories in the food. For example, a bunch of vegetables has just one tenth the calories contained in a small bit of chocolate cake. So make sure you have adequate regular meals, but firmly say no to various snacks, milk tea or even instant noodles.
