W: Hi, I’d like to tell you an interesting experience. It happened two years ago. A man named Charles Fagin from a Hollywood film studio came to me and said my house looked perfect for a film he was working on. He asked me if I’d be interested in renting it out for a few weeks.

The money he offered was attractive, but there was one more thing. They’d dig up my lovely garden. I was a little hesitant. But finally I agreed.

Fagin told me they’d paint some rooms, but he promised they’d repaint them after the shoot, and they’d fix anything they damaged. Preparation on the house began a month before the film shoot. The crew painted the living room grey. They brought in a larger sofa and dug holes in the ceiling for the lights.

For the film shoot, which took place over four days, I agreed to be out of my house, staying with my relatives. Fortunately for me, the shoot went well. The scenic painters’ attempt at repainting my living room before they left were so poor that I ended up painting it again myself.

About three years ago, Du Bois called the leader of the Sequoia Union High School District in San Mateo County to find out why she was receiving a daily email of her son’s grades. The leader told her the portal was working as it should.

Du Bois called every mental health professional she knew and they all told her the same thing: The supply of constant data on academic progress can overemphasize the importance of grades. Her district has since changed systems and no longer sends out daily grade updates. However, hundreds of other schools in the Bay Area still do.

A spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Unified School District said the feedback they’ve received from parents is overwhelmingly positive. Other parents have also told me the portals give them insights into their kids’ lives and open up conversations beyond “how was your day.”

Most of the portals offer parents the option of turning off daily notifications. Mental health care professionals advise that a healthier and more accurate measure of progress is checking grades once a week or even once a month. It’s what I have decided to do.

Touched by her story, the young couple asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.

In the candlelight of New Year’s Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man’s friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.
