I work as a volunteer (志愿者) for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. Recently I took my son Barrett there for a week, hoping to   16  him.
Before setting out, I told Barrett this trip would be tiring and   17 . For the first two days, he said almost nothing. I worried the trip was too   18  for a 17-year-old. Then, on day three, as we were   19  over high rocky mountains, he turned to me and grinned (咧嘴笑),“Pretty hard.”
After that there was no turning back. A five-year-old girl, wearing a dress several sizes   20  large and broken shoes, followed Barrett around, mesmerized (著迷). He couldn’t stop   21 . Later he said   22 , “I wish I could speak French.” I was   23  — this from a boy who hated and   24  French classes throughout school.
Usually silent, he   25  Gaby, our host, and kept asking questions about the country and its people. He blossomed (活潑起來).
26 , the moment that really took   27  breath away occurred in a village deep in the mountains. I was   28  a woman villager for an article. 135 centimeters tall, she was small in figure but strong in   29  . Through determination, she had learned to read and write, and   30  to become part of the leadership of the   31  .
Learning her story, Barrett was as   32  as I by this tiny woman’s achievements. His eyes were wet and there was a   33  of love and respect on his face. He had finally understood the importance of my work .
When leaving for home, Barrett even offered to stay   34  as a volunteer. My insides suddenly felt struck. This   35  achieved all I’d expected. Soon he will celebrate his 18th birthday. He’ll be a man.

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia was delivered to my house. No card came with it Calls to the flower-shop were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender’s name and just delighted in the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged these imaginings. She’d ask me if there was someone for whom I had done special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man across the street whose mail I’d delivered during the winter. As a girl, though, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy I had run into.
One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn’t care if I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gar-denia-lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery(神秘).My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. At the end of my senior year of high school, I got a job working at a local coffee shop.I thought the job would be easy and stress-free.I pictured myself pouring the best coffees, making delicious doughnuts (炸面包圈), and becoming friends with regular customers.
I wasn’t expecting the people with enormous orders, the women who complained that the coffee was much too creamy (含乳脂的), or the men who wanted their iced coffees remade again and again until they reached perfection.I couldn’t seem to please anyone.
One rainy day, one of my regular customers came in looking upset. He said he felt like getting in bed, pulling the sheets up over his head, and staying there for a few years.I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He was surprised, since he hadn’t ordered anything but coffee.I had given him his favorite type of droughnut.
“It’s on me,” I told him.“Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before heading back out into the rain.
The next day, it was still raining.I spent my afternoon hanging out the window handing people their orders.I was completely wet and freezing cold.Worse, no one was tipping that day.Every time I looked into our empty tip jar, I grew more depressed.
In the evening, the customer from the day before drove up to the window. He handed me a pink rose and a note.He said that not many people took time to care about others and he was glad there were still people like me in the world. With a friendly wave, he drove away.
I ran to the back of the shop and read the note.It read:
Christine,
Thanks for being so sweet, kind and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who’s indeed nice. Please don’t change your ways! Have a great day! –Hank
After that, whenever I felt depressed or sick of coffee, I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely, “How can I help you?”

C
Several years ago I worked in an office, which I had a locust tree growing outside the window. It had grown into a tall tree and must have been there for a long time. The tree blocked the view and made the office seem dull, unfortunately this happened to be the room assigned to me and I was depressed by it for quite some time.
When the first spring came, everything was green except the locust tree. Secretly, I was very happy because I had thought it had died.
One morning when I opened the window for fresh air, I unexpectedly smelt a familiar sweet scent floating into my office but I couldn’t name it. Suddenly, I realized it was the locust tree! The tree that I thought dead was blossoming in full glory.
From then on, I usually came to the office very early to see dew forming on the locust tree blossoms and every year was eager to see spring again.
During summer, the green leaves provided shade protecting me from the harsh sunlight, but allowing enough light in to make it pleasant. In autumn, the leaves turned into many different colors. Its beauty touched my soul. Many times I thought to take photos but never did. Then I had to leave in a hurry. Later in life it became a great regret that I had not done so.
Actually, many times in our lives, we think we own something, therefore we don’t cherish it. We don’t feel regretful until we lose it one day! Moreover, sometimes, we have to accept the things we don’t want and need to discover the hidden beauty to find unexpected joy!
