October 15th is Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get
millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.
Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments.
These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-private Partnership for handwashing with soap. The
goal, they say, is to create a culture of handwashing with soap. The organizers say all soaps arc equally
effective at removing disease-causing germs (細(xì)茵). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands
with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails.
Then, wash well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth.
The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. Soap also
helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases
the chances that people will wash again.
It also says that washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than
any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths,
killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half.
1. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?
A. To keep healthy by washing hands.

    e. Wetting hands.
A. a-c-b-e-d
B. e-d-a-b-c
C. a-c-b-d-e
D. c-b-d-a-c
3. Which fact can't explain why soap is important?
A. It gives people a longer handwashing lime.
B. It helps to remove a lot of germs from hands.
C. It attracts people to do more handwashing.
D. It gets all people into the habit of washing hands.
4. According to the last paragraph, diarrhea is a disease that ______?
A. kills half of the kids in the developing countries a year
B. causes the greatest number of child deaths
C. can be prevented to some degree by washing hands with soap
D. can't be cured without washing hands

I know what you're thinking: pizza (比薩餅)? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last
night's leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐), and they have a ton of different excuses for
doing it. Some say they don't have time. others think they're "saving" calories (卡路里), still others just
don't like breakfast food.
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you're trying to lose weight.
"Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all," says Katherine
Brooking, R.D, who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year's "SELF CHALLENGE". And even
pizza can be healthy if it's loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research
shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of
Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who
regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast
altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night's leftovers-it may sound
crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, "You can always eat it tomorrow," I put away
the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories.
And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
1. The word "leftovers" in Paragraph 1 probably means ____.
A. food remaining after a meal
B. things left undone
C. meals made of vegetables
D. pizza topped with fruit
2. What can we infer from the text?
A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.
B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.
3. According to the last paragraph, it is important to ____.
A. eat something for breakfast
B. be careful about what you eat
C. heat up food before eating it
D. eat calorie-controlled food
4. The text is written mainly for those ____.
A. who go to work early
B. who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late
D. who eat before sleep

Thirty-six volunteers in South Africa will test the safety of an African-developed vaccine (疫苗) against
HIV. The tests are the first step in human clinical trials of two vaccine candidates developed at the University
of Cape Town.
These experimental AIDS vaccines are the first from Africa to reach testing in people. The National
Institutes of Health in the United States provided assistance. Testing with twelve people began earlier this year
in Boston, Massachusetts.
South Africa has more than five million people infected with HIV, the largest number of any country.
South Africa launched the tests last week as the International AIDS Society held a conference in Cape
Town. Other human trials of possible vaccines are taking place around the world. Scientists hope to get some
results later this year.
But during last week's conference, experts reported the first decrease in international financing for AIDS
vaccine research. They said funding dropped from about 930 million dollars in 2007 to 870 million last year.
Also at the conference, scientists presented the latest findings about new mothers infected with HIV. Two
studies showed ways in which anti-HIV drugs could permit infected women to breastfeed their new borns
with less risk of passing the virus to them. The research was done in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, South Africa
and Zambia.
In one study, infected mothers began to take three anti-HIV drugs while breastfeeding for up to six months.
In a second study, the babies were given medicine, instead of their mothers. The babies received one drug
every day during six months of breastfeeding.
The researchers said both methods greatly reduced the risk of HIV infection.
Laura Guay is Vice President of research at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which
supported the research. Doctor Guay says the problem in sub-Saharan Africa is the limited availability of anti-
retroviral drugs.
LAURA GUAY:"We know that only about 33 percent of women have access to a program that actually
has services in place to prevent mother-to-child transmission. So the first challenge is, how do we reach all
the women who do not have access to a prevention program?"
1. That South Africa is chosen as the first country in Africa to test the safety of an African-developed vaccine against HIV is probably because ____.
A. it has the largest AIDS population
B. the vaccine has been developed in South Africa
C. the United Nations will offer it assistance
D. it has enough volunteers who are AIDS carriers
2. What does Paragraph 6 mainly talk about?
A. Women infected AIDS should not breastfeed their newborns.
B. Newborns are easily got infected with HIV if their mothers got AIDS.
C. Anti-HIV drugs help mothers infected with AIDS avoid transmitting HIV to their babies.
D. Both the mother and the newborn can take the anti-HIV drugs.
3. What can we learn from this passage?
A. The vaccine will not be used in clinical trial before it is proved to be safe.
B. South Africa was the first country which began the test of the vaccines.
C. Anti-HIV drugs have less effect on babies than on their mothers who are affected AIDS.
D. Only those women from rich families have access to anti-HIV drugs.
4. According to this passage, what is the problem that the vaccine research faced with?
A. The decrease in international financing.
B. The lack of volunteers.
C. The difficulty in human clinical trials.
D. Too many AIDS patients.

Vans, Keds, Dollies-they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you'll know they're
actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the short
term and storing up years of foot, knee and back pain in the future.
Here, the experts identify the problems caused by teenagers' shoe choice.
KEDS/VANS
Slip-on shoes with elastic (彈性的) sides are particularly popular among teenage boys-
with Keds and Vans the most sought-after brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat-so flat that the heel, which strikes the
ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.
BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their
flatness, as with Keds and Vans. However ballet pumps, which have no string or heel, have
other specific problems.
"As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on the toes to keep the shoe on, causing an
awkward gait (步法), this leads to short- and long-term problems such as calluses (繭子),
heel and knee pain."
WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait. They may look good, but the heels on
these are so high they can force the wearer's body weight forward, making them very
unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of
women with constant back pain.
SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists (足科醫(yī)生) have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear?
Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that
does not press the toes, such as Clark's, Marks & Spencer or Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing 'bad' shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics (矯形器) in the shoes. These
support and correct the movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrist, can often transform their walk
and halt the damage.
1. Of all the shoes mentioned in the passage, which can cause the worst problems?
A. Marks & Spencer.
B. Wedges & Stilettos.
C. Keds and Vans.
D. Ballet Pumps.
2. Which pair of shoes may not be found on the podiatrists' wish list?
A.  B.  C.  D.
3. The underlined word "halt" in the last paragraph probably means _____.
A. increase
B. worsen
C. stop
D. cure
4. From this passage we can infer _____.
A. trendy shoes may ruin teenagers' health
B. fashionable shoes all have orthotics in them
C. experts are strongly against wearing popular shoes
D. podiatrists are expert at producing branded shoes
5. In which column of Mail Online can you find this passage?
A. Sports.
B. Science.
C. Health.
D. Shopping.

A new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin cancer,
actually increases the risk.
Researchers from the University of lows based their findings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked
at the association between sunscreen use and melanoma (黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies
that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma.
Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen
helps prevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (發(fā)生率) faster than any other cancer in the
United States.
But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps
by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.
The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take
into account that those people most at risk for skin cancer-people with fair skin and freckles (雀斑), for
example-are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more
often.
The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove
how well the products had been applied, said the new study.
1. The underlined word "flaws" in the 2nd paragraph most probably means _____.
A. evidences
B. facts
C. faults
D. failures
2. People with fair skin and freckles _____.
A. seldom use sunscreen
B. are more in danger of skin cancer
C. can be free from the harm of the sun
D. often expose themselves to the sun
3. We can learn from the passage that _____.
A. sunscreen users get skin cancer more often
B. the volunteers have proved the effect of sunscreen
C. the new study was based on the experiences of volunteers
D. the number of skin cancer patients is increasing in America

How to Build a Windbreak to Protect Soil
Farmers use different kinds of soil conservation methods to protect their land against damage from farming
and the forces of nature. One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.
Windbreaks are barriers (柵欄) formed by trees and other plants with many leaves. Farmers plant them in
lines around their fields.
Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging
crops. They are very important for growing grains, such as wheat.
There have been studies done on windbreaks. Studies in parts of West Africa, for example, found that grain
harvests can be twenty percent higher in fields protected by windbreaks. This was compared to fields without
such protection.
Windbreaks can help protect a farmer's land. However, windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a
little wind to pass through. If the wall of trees and plants blocks the wind completely, then violent air motions
will take place close to the ground. These motions cause the soil to lift up into the air where it will be blown
away.
For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only sixty to eighty percent of the trees and plants needed to
make a solid line.
An easy rule to remember is that windbreaks can protect areas up to ten times the height of the tallest trees
in the windbreak.
There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right
next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for
windbreaks.
Windbreaks not only protect land and crops from the wind. They can also provide wood products. These
include wood for fuel and longer pieces for making fences.
1. What does the underlined word "conservation" mean in the passage?
[     ]
A. Damage.
B. Protection.
C. Force.
D. Harvest.
2. What do farmers use windbreaks for?
[     ]
A. To keep animals from getting into the fields.
B. To keep water in their fields.
C. To prevent their soil blowing away and wind destroying the crops.
D. To get more trees.
3. According to the passage what is a best windbreak?
[     ]
A. One with no breaks between trees or plants.
B. One with plants which have many leaves.
C. One with certain breaks between trees and plants.
D. One with as many trees or plants as possible.
4. What's the purpose of the writer in writing the passage?
[     ]
A. To tell us why farmers build windbreaks around the fields.
B. To tell us how to get a higher harvest.
C. To let us know there are usually windbreaks around the fields.
D. To tell us how important it is to keep soil and crops.

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors.
I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried
chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook
a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-
away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree
with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If
children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what
they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to
school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games.
Not only is this an unhealthy pastime, it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to
go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be
more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
1. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
[     ]
A. Those who often take exercise
B. Those who often watch television
C. Those who often have meals at home
D. Those who often walk to school
2. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because _____.
[     ]
A. their parents often cook meals for them
B. they are too busy to go out to play
C. they can't choose what to eat
D. there are many fast food shops around
3. The word steering in the last sentence most probably means _____.
[     ]
A. forcing
B. guiding
C. driving
D. moving
4. The main purpose of the text is to _____.

A. tell a story
