Signal that may prove E.T.is phoning home

By David Harding

It is the sort of out-of-this-world phenomenon that might have got E.T.himself jumping for ioy (if only his legs had been long enough).

Astronomers bare received three mysterious radio signals from outer space.

They picked them up while using a radio telascopc stationed in Puerto Rico to probe deep into the universe.

Each signal lasted about one minute and was recorded on the frequency which scientists believe aliens would be most likely to use, namely SHGb02+I4a (since you ask, this is the frequency at wbich hydrogen readily takes in and gives out energy.) According to New.Scientist magazine, the signal originates from a point her ween the Pi-es and Aries constellations (雙魚座和白羊座) where there is no obvious star or planetary system within 1,000 light years.

What is sending tbe signals is unknown, hut scientists working on the Search for Exlraterrestrial Intelligence project believe it could finally prove there is life “out there”.

”We are looking for something that screams out ‘a(chǎn)rtificial'“ said Eric Korpela, a researcher from the University of California, Berkeley.

”This just doesn't do that bot it could be because it is distant.”

Other scientists are not so sure it will point the way to alien life but they have ruled out a scientific joke. They believe it may be an unknown astronomical phenomenon or even a strange thing of the telescope itself.

”If they can see the signal four, five or six times it really begins to get exciting,” said Jocelyn Bell Burnell, from the University of Bath.

Outdoor Survival Provides Adventure Worldwide

Although there are no state controlled survival courses in Britain or the United States, there are various independent organizations offering similar activities.

Students can take part in outdoor training courses through university clubs and societies.Anyone can register with such groups, which then organize courses, training and trips for all members.

One of the most popular outdoor training programmes in both the US and Britain,is Outward Bound(戶外訓練).It was founded in 1941 in Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurous types every year.

The courses are intended to broaden minds through experiences that build confidence,self-esteem(自尊)and character. As well as specialist courses such as canoeing, leadership skills and sailing, participants can take part in week long adventure training camps which include a host of sports and survival training education skills.

Michael Williams,an American student, took part in an Outward Bound course last year.He said:“We learned lots of first aid skills, lots of natural history, lots of environmental facts, and took part in a wildlife preservation programme.Beyond that,my favourite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing.”

Courses can last up to 40 days and are open to anyone over the age of 14.Students must be in general good health, but do not need to be experienced in outdoor-sports.There is no selection process;everyone is welcome, although new participants are advised to pick a course matching their physical capacity.

Most of the British courses take place in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.Another similar organization is the UK Survival School, which includes courses on learning to live with the environment, sailing and winter survival. On a basic survival weekend students will learn how to get water and food, how to make fire and cook with it,to find and build a shelter, control survival life support, how to cross rivers, send off a distress signal, and to use compasses by day and night.

According to the leaders, such adventures are “an awakening,an exploration into the unknown”.Outward Bound believes that participants will “use mind and body traveling some of the Earth’s roughest wilderness areas”.

(2)

In Britain and the United States, survival courses are popular with ________.

[ ]

A.

The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a signal to attract the female from where she has been feeding.
Among many birds that nest in holes, the male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鳥羽) which acts as signal for drawing the female’s attention to a suitable nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(紅尾鴝) may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to reveal(顯露) his tail.
If the female failed to react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts by following the male through the hole the displays stop, you must be at the right place at the right time to watch them.
36. How do the blue tits choose their nest?
A. They choose their nest together.
B. The male chooses their nest.
C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.
D. The female chooses their nest.
37. The writer was lucky to see ________.
A. how the male made his tricks
B. how an interested female played with the male happily
C. what the male displayed and won the female
D. that the male tried his best but failed to attract the female
38. You can spot a pair of redstarts in a Walsh wood ________.
A. at any time        B. regularly    C. in April    D. occasionally
39. The writer is probably ________.
A. a bird expert     B. a bird-hunter   C. a bird raiser   D. a scientist

The fog was so thick that I couldn't see the man next to me. We were led down a road to the base of a hill. An officer, unknown to us, explained that the command wanted us to spread out on the road and fix bayonets(刺刀).When the signal was given, we were to creep up the hill and take the enemy by surprise with a bayonet attack.
I didn't think too much of the idea and about a dozen fellows agreed with me, but we lost in the vote. Some others didn't have bayonets and declared that the orders didn't apply to them, but their idea, too, was denied.
Up the hill we went, feeling our way along the ground with our feet. Step by step we advanced. It seemed like an ugly dream, but I knew it was all too real. I looked to my right and to my left to find any sign of my fellows. Much to my surprise, I could make out unclear forms on each side of me. I could hear whispers all along the line and louder orders to shut up!
While we were standing around arguing, the fog suddenly disappeared, just like somebody waved a magic wand(杖).We were caught out in the open with no cover in sight. The Chinese had been caught by surprise. Both sides just stared at each other, not knowing what was going on. A single shot rang out and somebody blew a whistle and shouted "Retreat"(撤退).We rushed out at full speed down the hill.
I don't speak or understand Chinese, but from behind us I could understand joyful laughter!
