I’m tiring. I’ve been digging all day and I’ll be doing same tomorrow. But I’ve never had so many fun. As an archaeology student, I have already knew something about the Qin Tomb. Most Chinese child can tell you Qin Shihuang first joined China together. He was a brilliant ruler, and he was also a cruel man. When he became king, he immediate ordered workers to construct an underground tomb, which it is said to contain great treasures. But the actual entrance to the tomb has ever been found, nor has the tomb been opened. It’s said that if everyone steps across the entrance, the crossbows will fire.

Children grow quickly, especially their feet, but many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites from the soil.

An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids — a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

“It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.” The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. “… and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were just way too small for her feet. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?”

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. “I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that. All these reasons why it really was important for me to try to make the shoes that could grow and try to help.” Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. “I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for a little over five years.”

1.Which of the following is the characteristic of the newly invented shoes?

A. They are more expensive.

B. They are not so comfortable.

C. They can grow with a child.

D. They come in different sizes.

2.Who is this kind of newly invented shoes intended for?

A. All the teenagers.

B. Children aged 4 to 14.

C. Middle-aged women in Africa.

D. Senior citizens with low income.

3.What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?

A. How the shoes work.

B. How Lee got his inspiration.

C. How to make the new shoes.

D. Where to order this kind of shoes.

4.Why does Kenton Lee keep a pair of his own shoes in the office?

A. To remind him of his promise.

B. To copy the design of them.

C. To get a change conveniently.

D. To use them as an example.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2017屆河南南陽(yáng)高三上期中質(zhì)量評(píng)估英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Suppose you have three things: a piece of wood, a nail and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a mean rumor(語(yǔ)言) about that person. If you hammer the nail in, you're obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail, there's still a hole in the wood, and the damage has been done.

There are many reasons why that nail of a rumor can be so harmful. Rumors are, quite simply, a form of bullying(欺侮). When a person or a group makes up a rumor about someone or decides to spread gossip, it's usually to hurt someone, break up a friendship, or make someone less popular. It's the same thing as teasing, only it's done behind someone's back instead of to his or her face.

When you spread a rumor about someone, you're sending a signal that the person is outside the group, and somehow less worthy of friendship than others. You're making fun of that person or pointing out negative things about him or her. This can let others think that it's OK to make the person feel bad, and make him or her an outsider.

We need to be able to trust our friends, but gossip and rumors can break this trust. If you tell a personal secret to a friend, and he turns around and tells it to someone else, you might feel like you will get burned if you ever get close to him again.

Letting a rumor influence your behavior is like letting someone else make a big decision for you. Let's say you hear that a teacher plans to call a Snowy Day tomorrow because a blizzard(暴風(fēng)雪) is coming. Expecting a day off, you don't do your homework as usual. The next morning, the blizzard turns out to be nothing more than a drizzle(毛毛雨), and school isn't off after all. You get zeroes on your work.

1.If a rumor is spread about someone, others may ________.

A. keep away from him or her

B. point out his or her advantages

C. not feel he or she is an outsider

D. be hurt if getting close to him or her again

2.To tell the rumor and the teasing apart, you depend on ________.

A. whether it is painful or not

B. whether it is done behind someone

C. whether it is a kind of bullying

D. whether it is spread fast

3.From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A. it is hard to keep rumors a secret

B. rumors can destroy your interest in learning

C. rumors can control your whole life

D. believing rumors can lead to bad choices

4.The purpose of this passage is to ________.

A. advise on how to deal with rumors

B. teach us how to judge a rumor

C. explain why rumors hurt

D. find out why rumors spread fast

“We are good mothers,” I said to my friend, as we sat on our comfortable beach chairs under our beach umbrella and watched our children playing in the waves.

Out of nowhere, the children took off running. About fifty yards from us, a man—maybe in his fifties—was fishing. The children stood next to him and watched with their little mouths hanging open as he cast the fishing lines. He smiled at them. They ran back to us—all except my three-year-old daughter, Drew.

My heart beat fast with horror. “Drew! Come here! Play with your friends!” I shouted, very aware that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren’t working. It seemed that many parents heard of horrible stories about children being taken away by strangers. Responsible mothers should teach their children that the world is a dangerous place. So I felt relieved when Drew ran towards me and took hold of a shovel (鏟子). Then she looked me in the eye: “I want to be with the person.”

Again, she approached the middle-aged man, and started digging next to him.

Several seconds later, she returned, waving something shiny.

“Look, Mommy! A toy fish!”

It was, indeed, a toy fish—yellow and rubber. This must have been what he was using to attract the fish. And he’d given it to Drew. The three other children were deeply impressed, and they didn’t try to hide how jealous(妒忌的)they were—clearly, they all wanted the fish.

“My friend gave me that fish!” Drew shouted loudly. The sand in front of the umbrella turned into a preschool cage match with a yellow rubber fish flying through the air. I felt like I might cry myself.

Unexpectedly, there he was: the man, standing right next to us with three more rubber fish in hand. He handed them to each of the children. By their faces, you would have thought he was actually the really kind big brother.

“Thank you,” I said, realizing that there is good and kindness in strangers.

1. How did the author feel when Drew stood beside the man?

A. relieved B. angry C. concerned D. calm

2. What does the author think good mothers should do?

A. be around their kids

B. warn their kids of danger

C. teach their kids to behave well

D. devote themselves to helping their kids

3. When was the author at a loss(迷茫)?

A. Drew handed her the toy fish

B. The kids fought for the toy fish

C. The toy fish was covered with sand

D. The stranger appeared from nowhere

4. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Give a kid a fish

B. We are good mothers

C. The world is dangerous

D. Teach kids to be kind

It is very common for you to find yourself in an unfamiliar situation. 1. Yes, everyone tells you to stand on your own two feet and take responsibility for your action, but if you haven’t experienced a situation before, how can you know what to do?

We usually try our best to do everything on our own and not to rely on others, but at certain times calling for help is the best way forward. You can picture the scene of the man—it is usually a man—driving blindly around an unfamiliar town looking for an address he doesn’t know. 2. And he could get to his appointment on time. It is obvious to everybody in such a case that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather the sensible thing to do.

3. For example, you are looking for a new job and need to write your resume(簡(jiǎn)歷). If your pride prevents you from getting help and you just do the writing yourself, it may well cost the opportunity you are seeking. Similarly, when you just started a new job, you often don’t want to admit that you haven’t got the knowledge to finish a particular task, so you keep going and eventually make things worse than they were. This may lead to a diminishing(貶低) of you in the eyes of the boss. 4.

Now you can see that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but is the sensible and mature thing to do. 5. Making your life easier by asking for and using knowledgeable help is not a sign of weakness, but is actually quite a clever thing to do.

A. What’s worse, you are most likely to lose the new job.

B. Actually speaking, asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

C. There are times when you know you don’t have the relevant experience.

D. If only he would stop and ask for directions, he could save lots of time.

E. However, many people tend to make mistakes over and over when help is available.

F. You will also recognize expert help would save your time, energy and money.

G. You can accustom yourself to asking for help sooner or later.

Developing ideas in writhing is the greatest

Developing ideas in writhing is the greatest problem that students face. 36 However, learning how to develop idea in writing, that is, critical thinking—the ability to think clearly and form a judgment is what proves most difficult for them. Students who have not learned to think critically often have a hard time developing ideas in writing. So, if learning critical thinking is difficult, what can you do?

37 Students, however, should not read without a goal in mind. Students should be active readers by studying how other writers build their arguments. In other words, they should consider the critical thinking of each author they have read. 38 What is the argument that the writer is making? What evidence does the writer use? How does the writer present their ideas? 39 How does the writer evaluate information? 40 It will also help you to think about how you can write better and practice your critical thinking skill, too.

A. Students can learn language rules, vocabulary words, and even how to structure essays.

B. Some students find learning grammar is difficult.

C. Students can start improving their writing and critical thinking skill by reading.

D. How is the writer using the supporting details?
