I was very excited that I could not fall asleep in last night. Yesterday morning, I went to a big gardening company for a interview. When I was a little child, helping my grandfather grow flower in the garden was my favorite. All what I wanted to be was a gardener. When I get to the company, I found there were many people waiting there but I didn’t know whether I could get the job. While waited, I helped the workers there to remove the fallen trees and clear the road. Lucky, I was the only one that finally got the job, because the manager decided to give the job someone who was helpful.

Sir Edmund Hillary is best known for being the first, along with climbing partner Tenzing Norgay, to reach the top of Mount Everest(珠穆朗瑪峰). However, he also made many visits to Antarctica(南極洲). In 1957, he led the first trip over ice to the South Pole. Hillary also helped his home country, New Zealand, build a research center on Antarctica, called Scott Base. He visited it in January 2007, when he was 87 years old.

In the 1900s, many people like Hillary saw Antarctica as an exciting place. Scientists are interested in how glaciers(冰川) flow and melt. They also worry that global(全球的) warming is making glaciers melt faster. It has caused a 75 percent increase in ice loss in the last 10 years, according to a new study. Scientists say ice loss could cause water levels around the world to rise faster than expected. Ice is melting faster than expected because of global warming.

Researchers in Antarctica are studying many other subjects too. Some use the cold weather and clear air as a way to study things that affect other parts of the globe. Antarctica has the cleanest air in the world. That allows scientists to compare the air there to the air in polluted places. Antarctica is the darkest place on earth, so it is a great place to study the stars. Some scientists are even studying penguin droppings(企鵝糞). They have developed a new test to learn more about penguins’ diets.

1.What is Sir Edmund Hillary best known for?

A. He was the first to reach the top of Mount Everest.

B. He went to Antarctica many times.

C. He led the first trip to the South Pole.

D. He helped build a research center on Antarctica.

2.The final result of global warming is that ________.

A. there would be no ice

B. water levels could rise faster

C. the climate would become warm

D. the ocean would be polluted

3.Who of the following would NOT be interested in Antarctica?

A. People who are interested in what penguins eat.

B. Researchers who like watching stars.

C. Adventurers who decide to climb Mount Everest.

D. Scientists who are studying the world’s air.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. Edmund Hillary

B. Antarctica—Best Place for Scientific Research

C. Global Warming

D. Studies on Antarctica

Five tips for safe running

We all know that exercise is good for our health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems.

Running is good exercise, but it can be hard on the body.1.

Take it easy. Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed. 2.

Listen to your body. Most running injuries do not come unexpectedly. 3. They may include body aches, sore muscles and pain that does not go away.

4. There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.

Take good notes. Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns(模式), things that happen over and over again. These notes will help you find the best exercise for you.

Cross train. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury free. They say swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercises to combine with running. 5.

A. Get good running shoes.

B. Usually, there are warning signs.

C. Running may also help you live longer.

D. These exercises are easier on the body.

E. Muscles and joints(關(guān)節(jié)) need time to recover.

F. As advertisements for the running shoe Nike say, “just do it.”

G. Here are five ideas to reduce the risk of injury.

Robert Ballard was born in 1942. From an early age, he loved the sea. Ballard grew up in Southern California. He spent his free time at the beach near his home. He enjoyed fishing and swimming. He even learned to dive. When Ballard wasn’t at the ocean, he loved reading about it. At age 10, he read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a book which describes the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo. Ballard decided he wanted to be like Captain Nemo when he grew up. His parents helped him follow his dream.

Ballard was a hard-working student. He spent many years learning all he could about the ocean. By the age of 28, he was an expert. In 1970, he took a job as a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. There he studied underwater mountains of the Atlantic Ocean. He came up with ways to predict(預(yù)知) volcanoes under the oceans. Working with other scientists, Ballard also found previously (以前) unknown sea animals. These animals lived far below the ocean’s surface, where scientists had believed no animals could live.

By the 1980s, Ballard’s interests changed. He developed unmanned(無人的)vehicles to explore the ocean bottom. His first find, the well-known ship Titanic, made Ballard famous. He was not happy with just one big find, however. He looked for and found other well-known ships. One was the German battleship Bismarck. Another was the U.S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier (航空母艦) that sank during World War II.

Today Robert Ballard is still an underwater explorer. He also heads an organization that encourages students to learn about science. I know what you’re thinking: pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the morning if you want to.

I know lots of women who don’t have breakfast, and they have many different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saving” calories(卡路里), still others just don’t like breakfast food.

But eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all.

Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers found that those who don’t have breakfast have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,”I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.

1.The word “l(fā)eftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means __________.

A. pizza topped with fruit

B. things left undone

C. food remaining after a meal

D. meals made of vegetables

2.According to the last paragraph, it is important to __________.

A. be careful about what you eat

B. eat something for breakfast

C. heat up food before eating it

D. eat calorie-controlled food

3.What can we infer from the text?

A. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.

B. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.

C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.

D.Eating vegetables helps save energy.

4.The text is written mainly for those__________.

A. who go to work early B. who go to bed late

C. who eat before sleep D. who want to lose weight

5.What does the author advise the readers to do?

A. Better eat up all the food at dinner in the night.

B. Better eat less in the night.

C. Better eat leftovers in the morning.

D. Better get up late and eat nothing in the morning in order to burn more calories.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Many people in high school cannot wait to go to college and leave their hometown behind.Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college.

One of the first considerations may be finance. State and public colleges are often the least expensive. Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons.

Another major factor is location. Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities. A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college. Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate.

School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “people_person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decision?making process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you.

Crucially(至關(guān)重要地), one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match. Similarly, an average school for an above?average student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard.Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.

1.When it comes to going to college the author thinks ________.

A.students will become homesick

B.students are unwilling to leave their home

C.financial situation is the first to consider

D.students are eager to attend their ideal university

2.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.The location of the college is a main factor.

B.A long distance will make students upset.

C.Students can be independent at college.

D.The climate must be taken into consideration.

3.What does the underlined part “people person” in the passage mean?

A.A very sociable person.

B.A very particular person.

C.A person of great capacity.

D.A person of great importance.

4.Which is the most important factor when choosing a college?

A.The location of a college.

B.The coming challenges.

C.School size.

D.The examination result.
