10.First lady Michelle Obama has some advice for some Tennessee High School graduates:Strike your own path in college and life and work to overcome inevitable difficulties with determination and courage.
The first lady told the 170 graduates that she spent too much of her own time in college focusing on academic achievements. While her success in college and law school led to a high-profile(備受矚目) job,she said, she ended up leaving to focus on public service.
"My message to all of you today is this:Do not waste a minute living someone else's dream,"she said."It takes a lot of real work to discover what brings you joy…and you won't find what you love simply by checking boxes or padding your GPA(成績)."
She said the school reminded her of her own high school experience in Chicago."My No.1 goal was to go to a high school that would push me and challenge me,"she said."I wanted to go somewhere that would celebrate achievement.A place where academic success wouldn't make me a target of teasing or bullying, but instead would be a badge of honour."But Mrs.Obama said pitifully that not all students have the same opportunities."Unfortunately, schools like this don't exist for every kid,"she said."You are lucky."
The first lady told graduates that failure may be a part of their college lives and careers, and that how they respond to any difficulties will define them."That's when you find out what you're really made of in those hard times,"she said."But you only do that if you're willing to put yourself a position where you might fall."
Overcoming difficulties has been the hallmark(特征) of many great people, she said."There's this guy Barack Obama…h(huán)e lost his first race for Congress, and now he gets to call himself my husband."The first lady joked:"I could take up a whole afternoon talking about his failures."

1.The USA is a land of immigrants.Between 1815and 1914,the world witnessed the greatest peaceful migration in its history:35million people,mostly Europeans,left their homelands to start new lives in America.Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families?
First,what forced emigrants to make the decision to leave?One major cause for European farmers to leave was the rise in population which in turn led to land hunger.Another was politics.There was an increased taxation(稅收) and the growth of armies,and many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason.Following the collapse (衰退)of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s,hundreds of thousands decided to start a new life in America.Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short,people chose to leave their homes for social,economic and religious reasons.As a result,by 1890among a total population of 63million,there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions?First of all,there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe.Next,factories were calling for workers,and pay conditions were much better than back home.Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads,and new towns needed settlers to live in and to develop business.There was the space for religious people to practice their faith in peace.
This immigration meant that by around the 1850s Americans of non-English had started to be more than those of English.As we know,there were losers.To start with,there were those unwilling immigrants,the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour.Nor should we forget the equally unlucky American Indians.By 1860there were 27million free whites,four million slaves and a mere 488,000free blacks.
Nowadays,the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.As always,it remains an attractive place to those who think it will offer them a second chance.

31.What is not the cause for people to leave their homeland?B
A.The search for religious freedom.
B.The search for adventure.
C.Unwillingness to join the army.

A.There was no land.
B.There was no peace.
C.The population had gone down.
D.There were too many of them.
33.Which of the following was not an attraction of the USA?B
A.Employment            B.A healthy life
C.freedom of religion   D.Business opportunities
34.What is the topic of this passage?B
A.The USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.
B.The USA is a land of immigrants.
C.Religion encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
D.About one-eighth of non-native born Americans live in the USA in 1890.
35.The American IndiansD.
A.were as fortunate as the slaves

5.A"talking kitchen"teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time.Researchers at New Castle University in the United Kingdom have developed the French Digital Kitchen.Professor Paul Seed House and Patrick Olivier led the project.Professor House tells us that it works like a satellite navigation(導(dǎo)航) system in a car, which direct us how to get to your destination.
The kitchen equipment and tools use motion sensor(動作傳感器) technology. The sensors help a computer guide the students through instructions in French.
This is how the system works. The system can tell whether you've done what you were asked to do or not.For example, the system tells you to take some butter and cut it with a knife. There's a sensor on the package containing the butter so it can tell where the butter's being moved. The sensor in the knife not only knows that the knife is moving, but it also knows what motion the knife is making. So it can know whether the knife is cutting or not.And it doesn't go on to the next step of the program unless you've done what it sense you've done.
Students can ask the computer to repeat the instructions or translate them into English. There are vocabulary lessons before and after the cooking.
Professor House says the French Digital Kitchen turns the process of learning language into a real-life experience."Here you're taking itout of the classroom and you're actually using the language to produce something that you can eat at the end of it.It's very enjoyable."
The system could be available for sale by the end of 2013.Adding the technology to a new kitchen could add about ten to twenty percent to the building costs. The researchers have also been given money to develop programs in six other languages, including English,Italian and Spanish.

19.Give people a chance before you judge them because you really never know what's going on beneath the surface.I am always reminded that judging a person by what others say or my first impression is usually wrong.
It's so easy to make assumptions (臆想)and expectations about someone,just to find out they were completely false.The shy girl turns out to be one of the funniest girls I've ever met; the mean girl is actually very sensitive and loving; the cocky guy is unsure of himself,etc.
I hope there is a world where we stop judging a person by what they wear,their hairstyle,their job,their car; we simply love and accept them for who they are.Someone may have untidy hair because they over slept,or their clothes don't match because their house burned down and lost everything.All I'm saying is,"can we focus more on what's going on inside a person rather than the outside?"
There are so many people who seem like everything is just fine on the outside,but the inside is angry or hurting.They don't know how to just be themselves or they're afraid to because they may be seen as the"crazy"or"strange"persons.
I truly believe everything begins with ourselves.Before we can really stop judging others by the outside,we must stop judging ourselves.We must know how to treat ourselves first.Let's stop getting in our own way and accept ourselves and others as we are.

25.The underlined word"cocky"in Paragraph 2probably meansC.
A.lovely      B.clever     C.proud    D.stupid
26.When we judge a person,we should pay more attention toD.
A.what he wears                    B.what he does or has
C.our first feelings and thoughts D.what's going on inside him
27.What's the best title of the passage?A
A.Don't judge a book by its cover
B.Judge a person by his outside.
C.Learn to just be yourselves.

20.I guess I always knew about the little fish treat,but this past summer it was all I could see.Pipin and Nemo were flying through hoops(圈),dancing with the trainer,and we were all applauding(鼓掌)-the little kids were excited.That's when the trainer,rewarded Pipin and Nemo with a fish.Each time they successfully performed a trick,they'd get an immediate reward.
These animals weren't really dancing,of course.They were performing a series of movements that they knew would have a fish.It's such a good show because the sea lions look like they're having such fun.These talented performers who love to be in front of people seem almost human.
Somewhere in our life journey,we all have a sea lion moment.You see how you've spent years jumping through hoops,not because it's really who you are,but because you've always done it and you will get reward for your performance.But when you've done that for ten or twenty years,you start to ask yourself,"Who am I working for?What do I really believe?"Suddenly you see it:you've spent almost all your life taking direction(方向) from other people.They've told you what to believe in,what to work for,how to live your life.You don't want to end your life like George.George is speaking to his son Ted,who cannot follow in his father's steps.He wants to leave college and head off on his own way."Dad,I can't stand it any more,"the boy says."Maybe it's all right for some kids.Maybe I'll want to go back some day,but now,I want to do what I want to and become myself."George,seeming old,says,"I've never done a single thing I've wanted to in my whole life!"
The Good-Bye Gate brings us naturally to a second passage,leading from being dependent to being self.You start to find out that where there is supposed to be a self,there really isn't.
