Now that the recession(經(jīng)濟衰退)is most likely over, it’s time to start looking at which companies, institutions, and individuals developed well during this unpleasant period. In the downturn that began in December 2007, the recession ruined the wealthiest cconsumer markets—the united States, Europe, Japan—there were very few safe shelters. But some countries, such as Peru, managed to grow right through the global recession. And some companies arranged their business so that they resisted the contraction and benefited from the trends affecting their industry. Some even managed to bring more business.
Chief among the Great Recession’s winners is McDonald’s. McDonald’s sales growth in 2008 was greater than in 2006 and 2007. while many restaurants reduced their business operation, it opened nearly 600 stores in 2008. and the chain has achieved same-store sales growth in each of 2009’s first seven months.
In 2008, after a decade of severely trading up to higher quality consumer goods and services, Americans began to trade down with a vengeance(報復). McDonald’s, which has 44 percent of its 32,000 stores in the United States, was set up to profit from trading down in two ways. Fist, in a recession, people eat out less and at home more frequently. And when they eat out, they eat at cheaper places. McDonald’s is so cheap, efficient, and convenient that it was a practical alternative to casual restaurants like Ruby Tuesday.
In the United States, McDonald’s may be a cheap source of calories in food. In other parts of the world, McDonald’s is an appealing brand, identified with middle-class, westernized consumerism. Much of the world, such as China, India, is still not developed for the Golden Arches. Coincidentally, these are the right places where its business has continued to grow during the global recession. While it faces operational challenges in markets, McDonald’s has benefited form a weakening dollar and rising incomes in Asia.
The question now for investors(投資者)is whether McDonald’s can survive the recovery.
When people feel better-off, will they still stop by? The growth in same-store sales in the United States has come down a little in recent months. And there’s a rising amount of the population that has grown accustomed to eating healthier and better. Going forward, McDonald’s may face larger cultural barriers in the United States than in China.
72.From the passage we can infer that__________in the recession.
A.the developing countries grew wealthier
B.the rich countries became unable to recover
C.the Western companies suffered a great loss
D.the opportunities were brought as well as challenges
73.McDonald’s managed to remain popular in the recession mainly because of       .
A.its good operation              B.the American food culture
C.its low price and convenience  D.the weak value of dollars
74.The underlined word “contraction” in Paragraph I means         .
A.formal written agreement       B.influence on industry
C.disappointing management      D.process of reduced trade
75.What can be the best title for this passage?
A.Who Won the Recession
B.Who Traded down in the Recession
C.How Western Business Survived the Recession
D.How McDonald’s Kept Growing after the Recession

One warm day when I was walking in my backyard, I saw a pinecone(松球) on the ground. I picked it up, and some seeds fell out of it. Those seeds would be a tasty treat for a squirrel (松鼠).
I realized that pinecones were not always open like this one. Sometimes cones were tightly closed. I decided to find out why.
I gathered pinecones from my backyard. I watched them for over a year. Here’s what I learned.
Pinecones open and close slowly as the weather changes. When it’s cold or wet, cones are tightly closed. This protects the seeds inside from rain and snow.
When the weather becomes warm and dry, pinecones open. On a hot day, you might even hear the sound of cones popping open. The seeds inside may then fall to the ground. The wind may blow the seeds to places where they can grow into new pine trees. A seed has a better chance of taking root and growing when the weather is warm.
“Pine seeds are an important source of food for many animals,” says Monty Maldonado. He is a pinecone expert with the United States Forest Service. He says squirrels depend on pinecone seeds for most of their meals. They spend lots of time gathering and storing the cones. Maldonado says some animals eat only the seeds from a pinecone. But red squirrels and gray squirrels will eat the whole thing.
Small animals aren’t the only creatures that eat pine seeds. Maldonado says big grizzly bears (灰熊) and people eat them, too.
Seeds inside a pinecone are important for the growth of new trees and as food for animals. It is the pinecone’s job to protect them. So take note of the pinecones you see on the ground. They hold treasures inside.
45.According to the passage, when it is rainy, cones          .
A.a(chǎn)re open   B.a(chǎn)re usually shut       C.grow quickly    D.stop growing
46.According to Monty Maldonado,        .
A.not all squirrels eat the whole pinecone
B.pine seeds are difficult to find for many animals
C.people in the forest are sometimes attacked by grizzly bears
D.most small animals depend on pinecone seeds for their meals
47.We can learn from the passage that on sunny days         .
A.seeds may fall out of the cones
B.squirrels stay still in their nests
C.it’s difficult for a seed to take root
D.the wind will put the pine trees in danger
48.In the last paragraph, the author points out that         .
A.more and more new trees need to be planted in future
B.people should be responsible for protecting animals
C.people should be careful not to damage the pinecones
D.squirrels now have few seeds to feed themselves
49.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author learned why pinecones are not always open in the forest.
B.The author gathered pinecones and observed them for a month.
C.The author is fond of gathering and storing the cones.
D.Pine trees are precious to animals and people.

Getting married can be one of the happiest moments in a person’s life. Throughout the world, weddings are very important events. Let’s look at some interesting wedding customs from different countries.

For African Americans, it is tradition for the married couple to jump over a broom covered with flowers. This represents the beginning of family life. It is interesting to note that African slaves who were brought to the USA started this tradition. African American couples were not allowed to have a legal marriage, so instead they had a ceremony where the bride and groom jumped over a broom “into marriage”.

Making jokes about the bride and groom is a wedding tradition in both France and Germany. In France, this includes making loud noises with pots; in Germany, wedding guests break dishes. Weddings in Germany often last for three days. On Thursday, there is a simple ceremony at a government office noting the official marriage of the couple. Then the couple will have a dinner with family and close friends. On Friday, there is a party. This is when guests break dishes to represent the start of a new life. Then on Sunday, there is a ceremony in a church.

In Greece and Italy, people eat special kinds of sweets at the wedding. Both Greece and Italy also have their own special wedding dances, which all of the guests enjoy.

In Russia, couples tie a doll to their wedding car if they want to have a daughter, or a toy bear if they want to have a son.

In England, it is tradition for the little girls to throw flowers on the ground on the way to the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom walk on these flowers. This represents the hope that the couples will follow the path that leads to a happy life.

You've heard of the fat suit and the pregnancy suit;now meet AGNES—the old person suit.

AGNES stands for “Age Gain Now Empathy(換位體驗) System” and was designed by researchers at MIT's AgeLab to let you know what it feels like—physically—to be 75 years old.“The business of old age demands new tools,”said Joseph Coughlin, director of the AgeLab.“While focus groups and observations and surveys can help you understand what the older consumer needs and wants, young marketers never get that‘Ah ha!’moment of having difficulty opening a jar, or getting in and out of a car. That’s what AGNES provides.”

Coughlin and his team carefully adjusted the suit to make the wearer just as uncomfortable as an old person who has spent a lifetime eating poorly and not doing much exercise.Special shoes provide a feeling of imbalance, while braces on the knees and elbows limit joint mobility.Gloves give the feeling of decreased strength and mobility in the hands and wrists, and earplugs make it difficult to hear high—pitched sounds and soft tones.A helmet with straps(帶)attached to it presses the spine(脊柱),and more straps attached to the shoes decrease hamstring flexibility, and shortens the wearer's step.

AGNES has been used most recently by a group of students working on a design of an updated walker.By wearing the suit they could see for themselves what design and materials would make the most sense for a physically limited older person.Coughlin said the suit has also been used by clothing companies, car companies and retail goods companies to help them understand the limitations of an older consumer.

“AGNES is not the destiny of everybody,” he said.“She is a badly behaved lady who didn't eat and exercise very well.A secondary benefit we’ve found with AGNES is that it has become a powerful tool to get younger people to invest in their long-term health.”

We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging.

His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.

According to Shen, it is the kidney(腎臟)which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

1.How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?

A.By studying Western medicine.

B.By learning traditional Chinese medicine.

C.By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.

D.By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.

2.What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?

A.Medical treatment.

B.People’s good kidney.

C.Level of people’s activity.

D.Positive life attitude.

3.The reason why people become old is that _________.

A.their bodies produce T-cells

B.their bodies are unable to fight diseases

C.they have reduced strength, loss of hair

D.they become weaker and weaker

4.We can probably learn from the passage that _________.

A.producing more low calorie food allows people to keep young

B.the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health

C.people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body

D.it remains unknown how effective Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine is
