I heard the bees long before I saw them.
It was a very hot afternoon, and we decided to    21   in the river near my home. As we climbed down a small rocky hill toward the water, my boyfriend John    22   started to shout and then jumped into the water below. Peter and Mary quickly    23    but I was too far away to jump. I was    24  .
I heard a low hum, which was growing louder. From a    25  , the group of bees looked almost like a cloud of smoke. As it got closer, I realized it was actually thousands of bees flying towards me.
All I could do was    26   my face with my hands.    27  , I thought that if I sat very 28  , the bees would think I was just another rock.
After a few seconds, I knew my    29   had failed. The bees were attacking me. I could hear my friends shouting at me to get down.
But it wasn’t so easy. The only way I could    30   was to use my hands to climb down the rocks. However, I was afraid to do that at first because my face would be    31  .
The noise the bees made was so loud and    32  , and I had no choice.
I rushed down the rocks and jumped into the pool. I was just so happy to be free from the pain and the water felt so    33  .
But we still weren’t out of    34  . Every time we tried to climb out, the bees flew back over our heads. We spent the next three hours in the water until the bees finally lost    35  .

The orderly came back in a few minutes with a rifle(步槍)and some Burmans. He told us that the elephant was in the rice fields below, only a few hundred yards away. As I started forward practically the whole population of the quarter flocked out of the houses and followed me. They had seen the rifle and were all shouting that I was going to shoot the elephant. It was fun to them, as it would be to an English crowd; besides, they wanted the meat. It made me a little uneasy. I had no intention of shooting the elephant—I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself—and it is always uneasy to have a crowd following you. I marched down the hill, looking and feeling a fool, with the rifle over my shoulder and an ever-growing army of people knocking and pushing at my heels. Beyond the huts there was a rice field a thousand yards across, muddy from the first rains. The elephant was standing eight yards from the road. He took not the slightest notice of the crowd. He was tearing up bunches of grass, beating them against his knees to clean them and feeding them into his mouth.
As soon as I saw the elephant I knew with perfect certainty that I ought not to shoot him. It is a serious matter to shoot a working elephant — it is comparable to destroying a huge and costly piece of machinery. There, peacefully eating, the elephant looked no more dangerous than a cow. I thought then and I think now that his attack of “must” was already passing off, in which case he would merely wander harmlessly about. Moreover, I did not in the least want to shoot him.
But at that moment I glanced round at the crowd that had followed me. It was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute. I looked at the sea of the faces above the colorful clothes—faces all happy and excited over this bit of fun, all certain that the elephant was going to be shot. They were watching me as they would watch a magician about to perform a trick. They did not like me. But with the magical rifle in my hands I was momentarily worth watching. And suddenly I realized that I should have to shoot the elephant after all. The people expected it of me and I had got to do it; I could feel their two thousand wills pressing me forward. And it was at this moment that I first felt the hollowness, the uselessness of the white man's control in the East. Here was I, standing in front of the unarmed crowd—seemingly the leading actor; but in reality only a puppet (傀儡). I understood in this moment that when the white man turns ruler of complete power it is his own freedom that he destroys.

Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Lisa. That’s where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small. My thick black hair had been recently cut short into an untidy style. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was 12 and one of the oldest in the class while she was 11 and the youngest. I was awkward and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. But she liked me and wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes—I was too shocked to answer any other way. My family had moved six times in six years, and I had never managed to develop any friendships. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.
She lived in a fun part of town that had two pizza places, an all-right bookstore, a movie theater and a park. As we walked from the school bus stop through her neighborhood, I tried to guess which house might be hers. Was it the white one with the perfect lawn or the three –story house with a front porch? I got very surprised when she led me into an old apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister.
When we got into the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was my next surprise. I had never played with them. We sat on the floor, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. We found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon .
Lisa was loved by the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines; the movie theater gave her free tickets…. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together.
Lisa, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through the rough years of early adolescence and taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.

I take the train into work every morning from a train station near my house. I can get to the station quite  31  because there’s a short cut(捷徑) to the station. But in the summer, it can get quite smelly because of all the  32 . So I always try to  33  through it. Today I was trying to do so as usual when something made me stop for a moment. I saw the most beautiful  34  by an old woman walking in front of me with the help of a white stick.
She was short and  35  and had white hair. She was walking  36  as each step took some effort. I hadn’t specially noticed her at first, until she stopped near a rubbish bin.
She slowly placed her walking stick   37  the rubbish bin. Then she leaned(傾斜) on it with her right hand. She bent down and reached for the rubbish. She clearly found it difficult and it took her a while. She   38  some rubbish with her left hand and slowly straightened herself up again. All the while she used the rubbish bin to   39  herself. She threw the rubbish inside the bin and then  40  walking. It all took her great effort.
There’s so much rubbish and no one ever does  41  about it. I was moved to see this old woman make such a great effort to keep even a small part of it clean! I haven’t been able to   42  thinking about that all day.
I want to follow her example. I’ve decided to pick up rubbish off the ground if I meet from now on. I hope people will do the same as I do.
