I had not seen my parents for a long time. Last Saturday I drove a long way to visit them,  36   neither of them was at home. So I waited patiently at their home  37 their return. Not seeing them made me really  38 .
As I was walking around their bedroom, I  39 little reminders of them. Some Christmas gifts were still  40 in boxes. There were  41 on the wall, which I guess must have a  42 meaning to them. What took my breath away was seeing my dad’s emblems(徽章)from his military service of our country  43 he was young. My father never  44 to us about the Korean Wars. As I looked at those emblems hanging  45 with all the photos that he treasures, I  46 that this was an important part of his life, but I never spent the  47 in talking with him about them. The photos of my mom with her close  48 made me realize her life before she was my mom. I had been so  49 running my business to raise my own family that I  50 the chance to know about their past and experience.
We sometimes don’t realize something is  51 for us until we have lost it, so it’s not too late for us to talk to our parents about their past. I am writing my story to  52 everyone who is fortunate to still have their parents  53 to invest some time to learn about them. I am grateful to have  54 of my parents. So I still have time to talk with them. I hope that readers will  55 from my story and find the time to talk about those things in their life that mean so much to their parents.

Mother’s Day is the time you say “thank you” to your mom. Stop shopping at the store. Flowers and other things in stores are too common to mention. You can choose a special gift for Mother’s Day! Just try staying close to home—and heart —write a Mother’s Day poem for her.
Use your head. Think of special moments when you were a child, times you’ve shared with your mom, things she did for you, and why you love her. Write down how those moments influenced you. Write down everything you can think of. This is your inspiration for the poem.
Look at what you wrote and pick out those things that are connected(有聯(lián)系的). See if any words rhyme(押韻). It’s fine to write a free poem(one without rhymes), but many people find poems with rhymes are easier to work with, easier to read and quite catchy(容易記住的). If no words rhyme but you want your poem to, try to find connecting words that can help connect memories.
Once you have a few sentences, put them in a good order. For example, you could start with a childhood memory and end with something you remember from last month.
Add a title that shows the feeling of the poem. Even something as simple as “For Mom” can work, although something more personal might be better.
Write it in pen if you have beautiful handwriting. Read the poem over breakfast on Mother’s Day, and then hand it to your mom. Let’s wait and see the smile and tears of happiness on her face.
小題1:Why does the author suggest writing down everything you think of?
A. Because it will show your mother’s love.
B. Because it will bring you inspiration.
C. Because it can be shared with others.
C. Because it can help answer questions.
小題2:It’s better to write a poem with rhymes because     .
A.it is easier to read and remember
B.it makes the poem more interesting
C.it shows the unforgettable moments
D.it shows how things are connected
小題3:The best title for the poem should be one that        .
A.can be read easily and quickly
B.includes a few sentences
C.has some special words.
D.shows the feeling of words.
小題4:The passage mainly tells us         .
A.what to do on Mother’s Day.
B.what to buy for Mother’s Day.
C.how to write a Mother’s Day poem.
D.how to write good poems for Christmas.

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very  31  .Some stories are told 32 they were true. Real people who live in a 33 world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not  34 . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be 35 for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only 36 . How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter ,we  37 seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than  38 . We do some strange things when we don’t like the way our life is going.Too often we blame(責怪)someone else.‘‘I wish my parents were more understanding.”
“I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!”
“My friends are so boring and self-centered.They make my life worse and worse.’’
Blame! Blame! Blame!
It seems natural to sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is,if you don’t like your life, you should do something about it.No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need.No one can read your mind correctly. You are the only one with the power to cheek your life, and if you want it to be different, you can change what you’re doing.
When you’re in trouble, don’t give away your power to decide how you feel about yourself. Choose how you want to think and act.Other people can’t make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their own way and then it’s up to you to decide how you will respond(回應(yīng)).For example, your friends go out to lunch without you and you feel very angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends,“They are not kind.Who needs them anyway?” Or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their explanation, and let them know you’d like to be invited next time.
When you decide everything in your own way, you’re getting hold of your own life and shaping(塑造)it according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy,to make friends and to build an interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn’t happening in your life, you have stopped growing or learning.
One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The only person you have the right to change is yourself.Once you change, the other person has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with yourself.

When I was younger it seemed that the super hero was Batman or Spiderman. As I grew up, I looked to real people with some of these qualities to be my super hero including being strong, honest, friendly, brave, skilled, hardworking, and reliable. The person I think of when I hear these words is my dad.
My dad is one of the toughest people I have ever met. He has been through it all. When I was five, 60 percent of his body was burned. In 1999 he fell from a tree, breaking his arm and shattering his ankle. In 2004, he had a liver transplant (移植) after being on the list for six years after a bad blood transfusion that gave him Hepatitis C. Now, my dad is 45 years old and feels better than he has in 15 years.
My dad is one of the most reliable people I know. Anything I ask of him, he does. Whenever he tells me he is going to do something, it is always done before I get home from work. Whenever I need my dad, he is there. When I was ten and he told me my grandmother was going to die, I felt really down. He was the one there trying to cheer me up.
My dad has worked hard for everything he has. At home, he is always busy doing projects and has painted every room in our house. After our shop was built, he constructed an office you would think a professional built. When I do something stupid, he helps me fix it. Of course, he does his complaining, but I know he likes fixing things just as much as I like tearing them up.
My dad has been one of the greatest parts of my life. I have learned a lot from watching him and I don’t believe I will ever meet anyone like him. I hope when I grow up, I can possess the same qualities as my dad, and have someone look up to me as a good role model. This is why my dad is my hero.

Just as the teacher hands out the spelling test, you see Jeff pull out a small piece of paper with a lot of small words on it. Jeff hides the note into his hand but soon takes it out again. While he's taking the test, you see him looking back and forth between the teacher and his paper. There's no mistaking it — he's cheating.
Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
