12.Dinosaurs ruled the planet for millions of years,and they are generally believed to have gone extinct.But the reality is that modern versions of dinosaurs are all around us.Scientists have been exploring similarities between birds and dinosaurs; and new research shows that these two types of animals are directly linked.
The connections between birds and dinosaurs are explored in a new museum exhibit called Dinosaurs Among Us at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
According to Mark Norell,the director of the exhibit and an expert at the museum,it is based on new scientific evidence collected over the last two decades."I think this is really going to shake up the way people think of dinosaurs"Norell told reporters."One could argue that we still live in the age of dinosaurs."
The exhibit includes ancient fossils and lifelike models of dinosaurs of all sizes to show the evolution of dinosaurs into birds.It examines several properties that are shared between the two species,including feathers,complex brains,the shapes.And sizes of eggs,and the ability to fly.Birds today make nests,lay eggs and tend to babies.Fossil research shows that some dinosaurs also made nests and laid eggs.Also,birds have hollow(中空的)bones,which don't weigh much and allow birds to take more air into their lungs.These adaptations help with flight.Some dinosaurs had these properties as well.In addition,the exhibit shows that there are many similarities between the legs,claws; and feet of dinosaurs and birds.
Norell noted that the research behind this exhibit is the result of advanced scientific,techniques; and new technologies.For example researchers used a scanning (掃描) process called computed tomography (CT) to look inside the brains of extinct dinosaurs.It combines with many X-rays to produce a 3D image."Modern technology tells us more than we thought we could ever know about the connections between dinosaurs and birds,"Norell said.

32.What's the main idea of this text?D
A.Experts.have discovered many dinosaurs'fossils.
B.A new museum has opened for visitors to New York City.
C.Research has been done on the lifestyles of birds and dinosaurs.
D.An exhibit shows the connections between birds and dinosaurs.

34.One of the similarities that dinosaurs and birds share lies inB
A.their lungs
B.their light bones
C.the shapes of their nests

35.What did Mark Norell try to show by mentioning CT?C

18.Some 30,000 years ago, artists who lived in caves in Europe painted pictures of the animals around them:panthers, hyenas, rhinos, cave lions, mammoths and other creatures which have been extinct for a long time.
The artwork, more than a thousand drawings,is considered the oldest group of human cave drawings which have ever been discovered. They were preserved because the cave was sealed---closed off--for more or less 23,000 years.
Fast forward to December 18,1994,a group of French cave scientists were exploring caves in southern France.Jean Marie Chauvet, who led the group then, describes the process of discovering the cave paintings."At that time I was in the front,Eliette just walked behind me,Christian behind.Eliette said she saw two marks with red ochre(赭石) and she said,‘They came here.'And at this very moment everything began. The drawings and everything linked to the parietal art(壁畫(huà)).That is where it started."
Cave art expert Jean Clotttes reviewed the paintings."I was amazed at the number of paintings there were and paintings of their quality and particularly in front of the panel of the horses."
Scientific analysis confirmed the prehistoric date of the artwork.Studies showed the drawings were created tens of thousands of years ago, before human history was written. The United Nations'cultural agency UNESCO lists the cave as a World Heritage Site. They say that the drawings form a remarkable expression of early human artistic creation of grand excellence and variety.
The Chauvet Cave has been named after the explorer who first entered it.However, its environment and drawings are too fragile to be visited by human beings. So the cave is closed, and only people there for scientific purposes can go inside and see the artwork.
However,F(xiàn)rench authorities asked experts to create an exact copy of the cave, called Pont d'Arc Cavern. The copy, which we also called replica, cost more than 59 million dollars to build. It opened at the end of April in France.
Pascal Terrasse is the president of the cavern. He says everyone will be able to experience the thrill of looking at drawings made by the first humans in Europe. He says the place is magic because it is done so well.Authorities say they think as many as 400,000 people will be allowed to visit Pont d'Arc Cavern every year.

13.Parents often assume that time spent with their kids will gradually decrease in adolescence. But a new study suggests that while teens try to avoid spending a lot of time together with their parents, private parent-child meetings may actually increase in their early adolescent years. And that may raise a teenager's self-esteem (自尊) an social confidence, especially if it is time spent with Dad,the researchers added.
The researchers created a long-term study in which they invited families in 16 school districts in central Pennsylvania to participate. In each family,a teenager,a younger sibling, their mother and their father were interviewed at home and then asked about their activities and self-worth five times over a period of seven years.
The study authors were surprised to discover that when fathers spent more time alone with their teenagers, the kids reported they felt better about themselves.Something about the father's role in the family seemed to improve self-esteem among the teenagers in the study, said study author Susan McHale,a professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University.
"Time spent with Dad often involves joking, teasing and other playful interactions.Fathers,as compared to mothers, were more involved in leisure activities and had more friend-like interactions with their children,w hich is crucial for youth social development,"the study showed.
But Marta Flaum,a psychologist in Chappaqua,New York, said,"How these findings reflect the real world is a real question. The sample in the study is so small and so unrepresentative of more families in the country today that I'm not sure how much we can g eneralizing from it.In my commu nity,in Westchester County,I don't see parents and teenagers spending much time together at all.Parents are often working so hard and have less time to be together with their kids."
However,F(xiàn)laum encourages parents tom make time for their kids no matter how much work they have to do."Research like this reminds us of how important it is.The time we have with them is so short,"she said.
12.According to the study, when teenagers spend more time alone with their fathers,A.
A.their social skills will be improved
B.their fathers will better understand them
C.they will be willing to help their siblings
D.their family will spend more time together
