     Last year my sixth-grader daughter, Elizabeth, was forced to put up with science. Her education week after
week, contained mindless memorization of big words like "batholith" and "saprophyte" She learned by heart the

she hasn't the least idea of what nuclear fusion means. Eliza-beth did very well (she's good at memorizing things ). And now she hates science. My eighth-grad-er son,Ben,also suffered from science education. Week after
week he had to perform lab experiments with answers already known.Ben figured out how to guess the right
answers, so he got good grades. Now he hates science, too.
     Science can provide an exciting way to develop children's curiosity. Science education should teach ways
to ask questions and week answers. But my children got the mistaken idea in school than science is difficult
dull and has no relation to their everyday interests.
     As a physicist, I am saddened and angered to see "the great science turnoff" I know that science is
important in our lives.Yet studies prove that our schools are turning out millions of graduates who know
almost nothing about and have almost no interest in science. What's gone wrong? Who is to blame?

  The New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) used to be a school for the blind. It was established in 1831, and it was one of the first places in the USA to offer education to blind children. Today NYISE's students are blind or learning disabled and aged between 3 and 21. they can attend school as day students or they can board on a weekly basis.

  Another special institution is Gallaudet University in Washington D. C.. This is the only university in the world that is exclusively for the deaf and hearing-impaired. It was founded in the 1850s, but it was only permitted to award degrees to its graduates after 1863.

  Some special schools cater for people with particular skills. Established in 1984 for students with artistic or musical talent, La Gauardia High School of Music and Performing Arts in Mew York was the first public school of this type.   When they are 14 or 15 years old, students living in New York can take the Specialized High Schools Examination. If they pass, they are allowed to study at one of the city's special high schools. The Bronx High School of Science is one of these institutions. Bronx Science had only 300 pupils when it was founded in 1938. the school used to exclusively for boys, but today it has over 3,000 male and female students specializing in science.

I graduated from the university with a degree of civil engineer. It is a good field but my heart was not in it. I wanted to be an actor or work in the entertainment industry…living a creative life. After three years of trying, I gave up my dream of being an actor and started a different career. I then tried network-marketing, but in the end, that failed. Seven years after graduating from college, I was still in debt, still searching for a satisfactory life. I decided to go back to civil engineering.
However, I was starting to get very disappointed with my life. Why is life not like what I expected?
I expected to have made a lot of money, gotten married, with a house and nice cars, kids, time freedom, etc. Millions of people lead lives with their dreams shelved, existing but not really living. I want my life to be different, more satisfactory, more alive. America was not providing that for me…
In addition, America was too expensive----always worrying about money was a headache. I wanted a life filled with adventure, romance, friendships, successes, and dreams realized.

     Jaime Alfonso Escalante was considered one of the best teachers in the United States. He was born
in 1930 in La Paz, Bolivia. He taught math and science in his home country for twelve years.
     In the 1960s, Jaime Escalante and his wife Fabiola came to the United States. During the next several
years, he learned to speak English and repeated his college education and teacher training.
     In 1974, Mr. Escalante was hired at Garfield High School to teach mathematics. The school was in a
poor area of Los Angeles, California. Many of the students in the school had serious problems with illegal drugs, gangs and violence. The school was in danger of losing its official approval to operate.
    Mr. Escalante's students were mostly MexicanAmericans from a Spanishspeaking area of the city.
Many were the worst students at the school and thought to be "unteachable". But Mr. Escalante pushed
the group to work hard. He told them basic math was too easy and that they had the ability to do harder
work.
     Jaime Escalante started an advanced math program with a small group of students. Advanced Placement is a program of collegelevel classes and tests. In 1982, eighteen of his students took the Advanced Placement test in calculus(微積分學(xué)). They all passed.
    The officials at the testing company suspected the students of cheating. Mr. Escalante protested(抗議). He said the students were being rejected because they were from a poor school. He urged his students to
take the test again.
     Twelve of the students repeated the test. And again, They all passed. Five earned top scores. Mr.
Escalante's students went on to become engineers, scientists and university professors.
     Jaime Escalante received many teaching awards. A movie about his success, Stand and Deliver, was
released in 1988. It influenced other teachers to use his methods.
    Jaime Escalante retired from teaching in 1998 and later moved back to Bolivia with his wife. He died
when he was seventynine years old.
