Winter sports are very popular in European and North American countries. These places usually receive a lot of snow during the winter months.
Skiing and skating become the major sports activities for Westerners during winter. People from Norway, Italy, the United States, Sweden and Canada all like winter sports.
Winter sports such as alpine skiing高山滑雪and skating are very popular because they allow people to keep warm while enjoying outdoors.
People can exercise outdoors in beautiful surroundings: snow-covered mountains and pine trees among endless white snow. Putting oneself into the white world and breathing fresh air, one can relax and forget all worries. Of course, the practice of flying down the hills excites people.
The Alps in Europe is the most ideal place for skiing. The Rocky Mountains in the Western United States is another good place.
Some people call winter sports “royal sports”. That is because of their high cost. These sports always require expensive equipment. They also need high-standard places to be enjoyed.
Winter sports are not popular in China. The southern and coastal areas have no skiing and skating. And the snow-blanketed northeastern and southwestern areas have very poor equipment.
But thanks to the efforts of the government, China has caught up with world-class competition in short track speed skating(短道速滑). This is also true for women’s figure skating. However,  in alpine skiing events, China                                          .

We’d like to agree with the recent report comparing the difference between a TV and a computer: When you use one you turn your brain on, with the other you turn it off.
Your brain may not be the only thing the TV turns off. It seems that men who watch a lot of TV are more sedentary, eat more food and are generally much fatter. Similar result have been found for women. Experts think that watching TV means that not only are you sedentary, but you have to watch food advertisement inducing you to eat more. The food that you are being induced to eat may not be good enough for you health.
If you are a couch potato, here are some suggestions:
Tape a piece of paper to the back of your remote control or TV Guide, and every time you watch a show, note how long you sit there and what you eat..
Review the record after a week. This can be a shock.
Don’t have a TV in your bedroom; having a TV in your bedroom greatly increases viewing time and if you tend to eat while viewing, the results are obvious.
Think of a healthy way instead of watching TV that you like. This can be as simply as walking the dog or walking to visit a neighbor regularly.
After a few months you are likely to be surprised about how much more time you seem to have and how much better you feel.

Certainly dustmen prefer to be known as “Refuse Collection and Disposal Officers”. You may think that this is rather silly, and that it is better to call a spade. But dustmen can be just as sensitive as people of any other occupations, though we must admit that their job is not the most romantic one in the world. We often take dustmen for granted. Perhaps because they usually come very early in the morning, before most people are up, we are inclined to forget that they exist. Our dustbins are emptied regularly, but we rarely stop to think about the men who do this. However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen________, the general public soon becomes aware that something is wrong.

Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages. During the first few days it was regarded as a joke. For some reason, jokes have always been made about dustmen, and some people thought this strike was very amusing. But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so funny any more. As the strike continued, people could not bear the accumulation of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to get rid of it. Even when the strike was over, and the wages dispute had been settled, it took several weeks for the country to get cleaned up completely, as so much rubbish had accumulated. Perhaps now the English people appreciate the work of their dustmen rather more highly, and won’t take them for granted any more.

An American friend of mine who was high up in a big corporation had worked out a way of handling a flood of e-mails before most of us had even heard of the concept. If any information he was sent was vital enough, his lack of response could ensure the sender rang him up. If the sender wasn’t important enough to have his private number, the communication couldn’t be that important. My friend is now even more senior in the same company, so the strategy must work.
Almost every week now, there seems to be a report suggesting that we are all being driven crazy by the bother of e-mail. If this is the case, it’s only because we haven’t developed an appropriate discrimination in dealing with it.
______. Firstly, you junk anything with an exclamation mark or a string of capital letters, or from any address you don’t recognize or feel confident about.
Secondly, e-mails don’t all have to be answered. Because e-mailing is so easy, there’s a tendency for correspondence to carry on for ever, but it is permissible to stop an endless discussion or to accept a point of information sent by a colleague without acknowledging it.
Thirdly, a reply e-mail doesn’t have to be the same length as the original. We all have e-mail pals who send long, chatty e-mails, which are nice to receive, but who then expect an equally long reply. The charm of e-mail can consist in the simple, incomplete sentence, totally regardless of the format of the letter sent by post. You are perfectly within the bounds of politeness in responding to a marathon e-mail with a brief reply.
76. Which sentence in the passage it the closed in meaning to the following one?
The possible existence of annoyance results from our inability to sort out e-mails.

Martin had just finished high school. He would go to college at the far end of the city. He didn’t want to live there, and he didn’t want to take the bus either. So his father agreed to buy him a car.
His father spent all his summer teaching him how to drive, from the ABC to the XYZ. Thinking of the great feeling of driving a new car, Martin learned very quickly, and received his driver’s license just before his eighteenth birthday.
The second day, all the family, and their dog, went to a car shop. Martin spent almost all the morning going from one car to another. Finally he saw a red Blue Bird. Martin climbed into the front seat. He said excitedly, “It’s my first day driving alone. Dad, Mom, and Poo! Enjoy it!”
His dad immediately took the back seat, right behind the new driver. Martin wondered why his father chose that seat, for his father always enjoyed looking in front.
So he said, smiling, “I’m sure you’re back there to have a change after all those weeks of sitting in the front seat teaching me how to drive.”
