How Can a Parent Help?
Mothers and fathers can do a lot to ensure a safe landing in early adulthood for their kids. Even if a job’s starting salary seems too small to satisfy an emerging adult’s need for rapid content, the transition from school to work can be less of a setback if the start-up adult is ready for the move. Here are a few measures, drawn from my book Ready or Not, Here Life Comes, which parents can take to prevent what I call “work-life unreadiness.”
小題1:_________You can start this process when they are 11 or 12. Regularly review their emerging strengths and weaknesses with them and work together on any shortcomings, like difficulty in communicating well or cooperating. Also, identify the kinds of interests they keep coming back to, as these offer clues to the careers that will fit them best.
小題2:________Kids need a range of real role models. Have regular dinner-table discussions about people the family knows and how they got where they are. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your own career and encourage your kids to form some ideas about their own future. When asked what they want to do, they should be discouraged from saying “I have no idea.” They can change their minds 200 times, but having only a foggy view of the future is of little good.
小題3:_______Teachers are responsible for teaching kids how to learn; parents should be responsible for teaching them how to work. Assign responsibilities around the house and make sure homework deadlines are met. Encourage teenagers to take a part-time job. Kids need plenty of practice developing effective organizational skills, such as managing time and setting priorities(優(yōu)先).
小題4:_________Playing video games encourages immediate content(滿足). And hours of watching TV shows with canned laughter only teaches kids to process information in a passive way. At the same time, listening through earphones to the songs for a long time encourages kids to stay inside instead of participating in other outdoor activities. All these activities can prevent the growth of children’s communication and thinking skills and make it difficult for kids to develop the kind of sustained (持續(xù)的) concentration they will need for most jobs.
小題5:_________They should know how to deal with setbacks, stresses and feelings of inadequacy. They should also learn how to solve problems and resolve conflicts, ways to brainstorm and think critically. Discussions at home can help kids practice doing these things and help them apply these skills to everyday life situations.
What about the son or daughter who is grown but seems to be struggling and wandering aimlessly through early adulthood? Parents still have a major role to play, but now it is more delicate. Most of all, these new adults must feel that they are respected and supported by a family that appreciates them.

Last evening, I went to teahouse with my best friend Susan. Before the tea was serving, we talked to each other happily. When the waiter went to us with the tea, we didn’t see him. Unfortunately, Susan rose her hand to comb her hair just while the waiter bent to put the plate on the table. His hand hit the cup, and the tea was spattered (濺) on her trousers. In my surprise, instead of complaining, Susan smiled, “So lucky that it’s not on my shirt, and I can’t even clean it.” Her words were very inspired. We cannot foresee what will happen, but looking at it in a positive way can make us be happy.

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(溫度計(jì))for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.    小題1:    We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.    小題2:
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水銀)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts. That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.    小題3:
First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.
   小題4:
Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water level easily.
   小題5:
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the level in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water level in the straw each morning for a week.
A.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
B.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
C.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal (把……粘住) them together.
D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.
E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
F.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.

Radioactive(放射性的) pollution can be said to be the emission(排放) of radioactive substance into air, water or land due to human activities in the form of radioactive waste. Radioactive waste is usually the product of nuclear fission(核裂變), which is widely used in nuclear power stations and nuclear weapons.
The radioactivity of nuclear waste decreases with time. That means the waste needs to be separated from the reach of living beings until it no longer causes a threat to living beings. This time period may take from days to months and to years depending upon the radioactive nature of the waste.
Radioactive pollution that is spread through the earth’s atmosphere is called ‘fallout’. Nuclear pollution began to attract people’s attention during the World War II period when the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union started conducing nuclear tests. The best example of fallout is the nuclear bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945 by the United States of America during World War II. As a result of the bomb attack, nearly 225,000 people died within 5 years of the attack due to the radiation effects and cancer.
In land and water, the major source of radioactive pollution remains with the nuclear fuel cycle(核燃料循環(huán)). The nuclear fuel cycle is used in nuclear power stations and extraction(提煉) of materials from nuclear substance, where the pollutants are left behind after the useful material has been extracted.
The effects of radioactive pollution were first reported in the early 20th century when people working in uranium mines(鈾礦井) suffered from skin burn and cancer. The effects vary from one individual to another. Exposed to radioactive radiations for a long time, living beings may suffer from the damage to the DNA cells, which results in cancer, genetic defects for the generations to come and even death.
In a word, since every coin has its two sides, it’s a good idea to prevent from its disadvantages while making full use of its advantages.
