8.A recent study has found that the risk of dementia(癡呆) can increase if people live near a main road.According to the research,waste gas and noise from a busy road lead to one in ten dementia deaths of the 6.6 million patients investigated.
Air pollution is already known to contribute to the deaths of around 40,000 people in Britain each year by worsening breathing and heart conditions, while previous research showed emissions (排放物) can cause brain shrinkage. But the new study by Canadian public health scientists is the first to find a link between living close to heavy traffic and the increasing of dementia,a discovery described as"believable"and"impressive"by British experts.
Dr Hong Chen said."Our study suggests that busy roads could be a source of environmental stressors that could give rise to the onset of dementia.Population growth and urbanization has placed many people close to heavy traffic,and with widespread exposure to heavy traffic and growing rates of dementia,even a modest effect from near-road exposure could cause a large public health burden.More research to understanding this link is needed,particularly into the effects of different aspects of traffic,such as air pollutants and noise."
In the new study,the team tracked all adults aged between 20 and 85 living in Ontario for more than a decade from 2001 to 2012.They used postcodes to determine how close people lived to a main road and analyzed medical records to see if they went on to develop dementia,Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis(多發(fā)性硬化).
While there was no correlation between living near a road and Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis,
dementia risk reduced as people lived further from a main road,with a 7 percent higher risk in developing dementia among those living within 50 metres; a 4percent higher risk at 50-100 metres and a 2 percent higher risk at 101-200 metres.After 200 metres there was no increase.Researchers believe that noise of traffic may also play a role in the raised risk as well as other urban pollution,which is often present near busy roads.

Air pollution is already known to contribute to the deaths of around 40,000 people in Britain each year by worsening breathing and heart conditions,據(jù)了解,空氣污染每年導致英國約40000人死亡,原因是呼吸和心臟狀況惡化.
Our study suggests that busy roads could be a source of environmental stressors that could give rise to the onset of dementia.Population growth and urbanization has placed many people close to heavy traffic, and with widespread exposure to heavy traffic and growing rates of dementia, even a modest effect from near-road exposure could cause a large public health burden.More research to understanding this link is needed, particularly into the effects of different aspects of traffic, such as air pollutants and noise."
While there was no correlation between living near a road and Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis,雖然住在公路附近和帕金森氏病或多發(fā)性硬化癥沒有相關(guān)性,但通過后文得知也做出了一定的改變.
Researchers believe that noise of traffic may also play a role in the raised risk as well as other urban pollution, which is often present near busy roads. 故選A.

If your children are primary-aged and struggling with reading or writing,ask their class teacher how you can best help your child.Perhaps their teacher could recommend some short,fm activities you could do together at home or a selection of suitable and appealing books you could read with your child.

16.I'm part of the Roots & Shoots program founded by Dr.Jane Goodall.The program is intended to make and promote positive changes in the world.As Dr.Goodall says,"What you do makes a difference,and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."
In Bulgaria,where I live,homeless dogs are everywhere.Many people here turn a blind eye to them.But I cannot ignore the life of a street dog whenever I see one wandering in the street,looking for something to eat.That's why I'm no longer a food waster.When I see wasted food,I always think of a hungry dog climbing to garbage bins,searching for food that people have thrown there.When eating in a restaurant,I'm not afraid to take leftover food to feed stray cats or dogs.
A week ago,I saw a homeless dog around the garbage bins.Immediately I knelt down,spoke to her softly and ran my hands over her.I could see that she had had puppies.I couldn't imagine how she could have been able to care for them.Hours earlier,I'd bagged up a plate of leftover fish.As I unwrapped it,she wagged her tail and sniffed at it.She ate all the fish in no time.
It's sad,isn't it?I can't understand why many of us waste so much and think little of it.These homeless animals have taught me that food is precious.Even when I don't have leftovers with me,I'll take the time to get something from the grocery store to feed them.
I know my power is small,so I hope that next time you see wasted food,do turn it into worthy food. You have the power to save a life!

20.Bicycle Sharing
Foryears,bike-sharing plans have been common in big cities around the world, including in China.Examples include Paris's Vélib and London's Santander Cycles ("Boris bikes").But these require customers to return the bicycles to docking stations (泊車位).In China,a more user-friendly approach is spreading rapidly. It involves bikes that can be paid for using a smartphone and left anywhere.GPS tracking enables them to be located with a mobile app.A ride typically costs only one yuan(﹩0.15)on a bike in an eye-catching colour.
The first such service was launched in June 2015 by a startup called Ofo.The company now has around 2.5m yellow-framed bikes in more than 50 cities in China.Its main rival,Mobike,which started up only a year ago,says it has"several million"of its orange-wheeled bikes spread across a similar area.Bluegogo has half a million bikes in six Chinese cities.It plans to add a new city every two weeks.
However,the dockless system is easy to abuse.Some riders hide the bikes in or near their homes to prevent others from using them.Another trick involves scratching off a bike's QR code to stop others from scanning it.A bigger problem for the new firms is persuading people to use bikes instead of cars.Thirty years ago,63% of Beijingers cycled to work.Now,only 12% do.Many people think that cycling is only for the poor.A dating-show contestant famously said in 2010 that she would"rather cry in a BMW than smile on a bike."Cycling is also dangerous.About 40% of road accidents involve bicycles,according to a report in 2013.Some city authorities accuse the bike-sharing firms of causing congestion.This month,the southern city of Shenzhen ordered limits on the number of shared bikes.Other cities,including Shanghai and Beijing,are considering similar measures.
Despite some disadvantages,such user-friendly services represent the kind of green innovation that China wants and may even bring"a revolution".
