A few years ago, my younger brother and I went to Norfolk, Virginian by plane.       , before we took off, we heard the pilot’s voice throughout the plane, “sorry, ladies and gentlemen. We have no       on the plane. We have a generator(發(fā)電機(jī)), and we are going to        the engines with it. We will        in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens. ”
See what happens? We are going to get up in the air, and see what happens? At this point, one woman started crying. “Oh, no! We are going to       !” There were sighs of desperation and       spreading throughout the plane, and we hadn’t even        yet. Thirty minutes passed and we were still        there. Then the voice of the pilot came over again,“ Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are       , so we are. We only have one engine going right now, and it is working double time. ”
There was crying       we had walked into grave. But, the pilot told us our one engine was working double time, and his        was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air and         happened. We arrived in Norfolk and everyone        for still being alive.
Although I do sincerely like to have a plan        “see what happens”, which really isn’t such a bad life strategy, all too often, I would see people pursuing their goals        with inaction just because they don’t have        success. Actually, success will never be guaranteed. The       thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens.
If you are planning to learn a new skill, get up in the air, and see what happens! It might not be as       as you thought. You might be smarter than you thought. It could be        ! So don’t stay there trying nothing just because there is no        of guaranteed success.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

Fortunately, I've been able to avoid the traffic jam brought by presidential visits because ! don't have to commute anywhere. Barack Obama visited Los Angeles recently which paralyzed large sections of a city and you could almost hear the collective pain of unhappy commuters.
I am among the l0 percent of people in the US that regularly work from home. You could include Obama among them, although I suspect his working area in the White House is better-equipped than my small space on to the back of the garage. He also probably doesn't have a problem with three little kids interrupting his phone calls or bursting into his office at inappropriate moments.
Every day there they are, knocking on my window and peering inside, as if looking at an animal in a zoo. Once, a telephone interview I was doing with the former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was interrupted by my older son, then three years old, and completely naked "Ahaaar!" he shouted to my face. "What was that?" said Schwarzenegger. I stammered(結(jié)巴地說出) something about the joys of children and silently managed to shoo the boy out of the room without putting down the phone.
I shouldn't complain. I no longer have to stand having someone's armpit(腋窩) being pressed into my face on a crowded train and home status means ! should be a more productive worker although working from home could also lead to "avoiding duties from home". I would argue that a bigger problem is going nuts: Staring at the same walls every day and not going anywhere can do strange things to a person.
I realized I had to get out of the house at least once a day to avoid turning into an unshaven and unshoweredrecluse(隱士) who was still in his pyjamas at dinner time. I would work for an hour or so in a local coffee shop but, like most routine, this became boring because I would constantly see the same faces: Screenwriters poring over screenplays, elderly women heading to the yoga studio next door and hordes of overweight middle-aged male cycling by.
And yet here I am several years later, still working from home consciously and, I'm happy to report, not sitting at my desk in my pyjamas. Not since last Tuesday, anyway.
小題1:The author may agree that __
A.it's a bad decision to work from home
B.presidential visits bring inconvenience to the locals
C.if a person wants to be more productive, he must work from home
D.the former California governor was angry at the interruption during the interview
小題2:The incident of three-year-old son is described to prove that___
A.working from home has some drawbacks
B.working from home is a pleasant experience
C.Barack Obama has better working conditions than the author
D.it's unfortunate for the author to have a naughty boy
小題3: The reason why the author goes to the coffee shop is that __
A.he wants to get familiar with the people around
B.he doesn't like working in his pyjamas at home
C.he becomes bored with being a commuter
D.he needs some changes to get relaxation
小題4:The whole passage suggests that __
A.the author has to work from home
B.a(chǎn)ny routine definitely means boredom
C.the author is a humorous person
D.working from home contributes to avoiding duties

Dogs and cats are not for students who live in the dormitory. Just think about the noise, the smell and all that wild behaviorchewing on whatever they can get their teeth on, or knocking over the trash can. But don't feel sad. There are smaller and less destructive pets to make your dormitory life colorful.

Betta fish
They make great pets with their big personality and astonishing colors, ranging from bright red, dark blue to lemon yellow. Unlike many fish, most bettas react to their owner's presence and become more active when they are nearby, which is unusual in the fish world.

Chinchillas
Without bad smell, about the size of a rabbit and with fur so dense that they can't get pests such as fleas(跳蚤), the friendly creature originally from the Andes Mountains in South America makes an ideal indoor pet. Chinchillas are very social animals, so if you only have one, you will become its family. In cold winter days, in a glace at this fury pet in a dorm will bring you a lot of warmth.
Land hermit crabs

In a society where owners are often asked “Are they tasty?”, land hermit crabs are among the most unlucky animals commonly kept as pets. But they are easy to care for, inexpensive and fascinating to watch. And the fact that they don't cause any allergic reactions makes them perfect for college dormitories.

Redeared sliders
If you're interested in a lifelong friend, a redeared slider makes a wonderful pet. If well cared for, they can live for around 40 years. But there are a couple of things you should know. Redeared can grow to an adult size of up to 30cm! So you may need a larger tank quickly. In addition, you will need to provide UV lighting, water heater, and a swimming area and a basking (曬太陽) area. Housing a red eared slider is not easy.

Consumer electronics once again topped the list of the most wanted gifts this holiday season. “Seventy-six percent of consumers who plan to buy holiday gifts say that they will spend money buying at least one technology product; definitely a solid vote of confidence for technology.” Steve Koenig is with the Consumer Electronics Association. He says the group’s latest research also shows that Americans this year are spending more on technology products.
“Here in 2012, $252 on average–the technology spend for consumers this year.” From tablet computers to smartphones, American shoppers have been lining up to get the newest and coolest electronic devices on the market. There are more choices today than ever before. “It’s kind of hard to make a decision.”
Tablet computers are one of the best-selling products this year. Brian Tong is Senior Editor of CNET.com. The website reports on tech news and examines the latest electronic products. He says the Apple iPad Mini is one of the most popular tablets. Its starting price is $329. One of Apple’s biggest competitors is the Google Nexus 7. It starts at $199.
“The hardware inside is more powerful than what’s in the iPad Mini, but also it offers you a lot of things like maps that work better than Apple’s maps.” Brian Tong says there is one reason why people may like the iPad Mini more than the Nexus 7. “If you just want to read books and surf the Internet, you don’t really need to get an iPad Mini, but if you want the largest group of apps that’s where the iPad and Apple’s ecosystem shines the most.”
Elman Chacon is with the electronics store Best Buy. He says another hot product this season is smart cameras. They connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi. This makes it easy for users to email or upload photographs directly from the camera. “You can literally take a picture, upload it into your Facebook in a matter of seconds. These things are pretty cool because they do a lot of things.”
Streaming media boxes also connect to the Internet. People are able to watch web content such as movies and YouTube videos on their televisions. Another popular item is wireless speaker systems. The newest ones work with any device that has Bluetooth technology, including smartphones, laptops and tablets.
With the growing popularity of Internet shopping, many consumers will visit a store first to look at a product, and then go online to find it at a lower price. Stores like Best Buy understand that and they want to stay competitive.
“We have something called the perfect match promise which means if you buy a certain device and you find it cheaper within 30 days we’ll go ahead and price match that for you.” Elman Chacon said.
小題1:According to Brain Tong, ________.
A.the Apple’s iPad Mini is more suitable for enthusiastic readers
B.the hardware in iPad Mini is more advanced than that in Nexus 7
C.Nexus 7 has fewer apps than iPad Mini
D.iPad mini is more eco-friendly
小題2:If you’ve discovered that a certain device you bought at Best Buy is more expensive than one at another store, ________.
A.you are sure to get double the amount you paid
B.you can return the device and get your money back
C.the store will return the price differences
D.the store will lower the price within 30 days
小題3:Which of the following would be the best gift for a cab driver?

People on a college campus were more likely to give money to the March of Dimes if they were asked for a donation by a disabled woman in a wheelchair than if asked by a nondisabled woman. In another        , subway riders in New York saw a man carrying a stick stumble(絆腳) and fall to the floor. Sometimes the victim had a large red birthmark on his      ; sometimes he did not. In this situation, the victim was more likely to         aid if his face was spotless than if he had an unattractive birthmark. In         these and other research findings, two themes are         : we are more willing to help people we like for some reason and people we think     assistance.
In some situations, those who are physically attractive are more likely to receive aid.       , in a field study researchers placed a completed application to graduate school in a telephone box at the airport. The application was ready to be        , but had apparently been "lost". The photo attached to the application was sometimes that of a very          person and sometimes that of a less attractive person. The measure of helping was whether the individual who found the envelope actually mailed it or not. Results showed that people were more likely to        the application if the person in the photo was physically attractive.
The degree of      between the potential helper and the person in need is also important. For example, people are more likely to help a stranger who is from the same country rather than a foreigner. In one study, shoppers on a busy street in Scotland were more likely to help a person wearing a(n)           T-shirt than a person wearing a T-shirt printed with offensive words.
Whether a person receives help depends in part on the "worth" of the case. For example, shoppers in a supermarket were more likely to give someone.        to buy milk rather than to buy cookies, probably because milk is thought more essential for        than cookies. Passengers on a New York subway were more likely to help a man who fell to the ground if he appeared to be         rather than drunk.
