Without a doubt, exercise at any time of the day beats no exercise at all.But which is a better time for exercise, morning or evening?

In various studies, scientists have found that subjects tend to do slightly better on measures of physical performance—including endurance(耐力),strength output, reaction time and aerobic capacity—between 4 and 7 p.m.There’re quite a few explanations:the body’s temperature and hormone(荷爾蒙)levels peak in late afternoon, making muscles(肌肉)more flexible and producing the best ratio(比率)of testosterone (the muscle-building hormone)to cortisol (the hormone that does the reverse).

But these variations have only small effects. And much as one can adjust to waking up at the same time daily, studies have shown that the body can adapt to the time of day that you train. In several long-term studies, for example, scientists randomly split people into groups and instructed them to train only in the morning or only in the early evening. In the end, the morning exercisers generally did better on tests of physical performance early in the day, while the evening exercisers did better when tested later.

On a practical level, that means that if you plan to run a marathon that starts in the morning, it may be best to schedule your training runs early in the day.

In general, research suggests that the ideal time to exercise is late afternoon, though the advantages are slight.

1.The scientists have found in their studies that the participants usually ______ between 4 and 7 p.m.

2.At the end of the long-term studies, the morning exercisers must have been tested _______

A.only in the morning

B.only in the evening

C.earlier than the evening exercisers

D.both in the morning and evening

3.Which proverb can be used to explain the idea expressed in the third paragraph?

A.Practice makes perfect.

B.Habit is a second nature.

C.Where there is a will, there is a way.

D.Failure is the mother of success.

4.What was taken into consideration when the scientists tried to find out the best time for exercise?

A.The exercising environment.

B.The kind of sports the exerciser is having.

C.The exerciser's physical condition.

D.The age of the exerciser.

5.Which shows the correct order in which the activities decrease in physiological advantage, generally speaking? (“→” means “better than”)

A.Evening exercise → morning exercise → no exercise at all → midday exercise

B.Evening exercise → morning exercise → midday exercise → no exercise at all

C.Morning exercise → evening exercise → midday exercise → no exercise at all

While you should always keep your options open to changing your mind , you should also be sure to target exactly what you want in a job. A job-hunt with a clear target will surely help you achieve better results than an aimless one.

Use every possible method to get interviews-answering ads, using search firms , getting in touch with companies directly , surfing the Web, and networking(向同行請教 ). Even if a job is not perfect for you, every interview can become one of your positive experiences.

Why is setting goals important?   71   Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.

Successful people imagine how their life should be and set lots of goals.   72   It’s like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of in this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind which can be found in a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver. But she drivers aimlessly around. Never getting anywhere, just using up gas. Which driver do you want to be?

73  They decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set, and they aren’t difficult to reach.   74  You are the one who must decide what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life.

75  Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget. Also when you write your goals in a particular way you are able to make yourself continuously aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goal.

A.Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it.

B.Winners in life set goals and follow through.

C.It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are.

D.It’s difficult for a driver to reach his destination without a map.

E.Because goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life.

F.By setting goals you are taking control of your life.

G.Because everybody should have a goal in his mind.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.?

The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.?

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.?

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.?

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(靈活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.?

D. say language is also a kind of physical labor?

3. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means_____________.?

閱讀下列材料, 并從所給的六個選項(A、B、C、D、E、F)中選出符合各小題要求的最佳選項并在答題紙上將該選項標號涂黑。選項中有一項是多余選項。

The people below traveled abroad. Read the following stories and decide what problem each traveler experienced while traveling.

1._______ David got lost in an isolated place. To make matter worse, he had an accident and couldn’t walk freely. So he was in great need of timely help.

2.______ Paul had to buy a hamburger and ate it in the park instead of eating his mother’s delicious chicken, with which he couldn’t go through the customs(海關).

3._____ Ann was stopped at the customs because she was carrying drugs without a doctor’s prescription. How regretted she was not to have done that!

4._____ Sally offended some of the people in the town she was visiting by wearing inappropriate clothes. She should have found out about local customs and followed them.

5.______ Jack didn’t obtain a transit card when he changed planes at an airport, which made him very worried. There was no doubt that he was not allowed to get on board.

A  My mother was worried about me. She cooked me all my favorite dishes and put them into a box to take with me on my journey. But the customs officer inspected all the plant and animal products at the airport. Unfortunately it was illegal for me to bring into the country the kind of food my mother had given me and so it all had to be thrown away.

B  It was very hot so I put on some shorts and a T-shirt to go sightseeing. I hadn’t gone very far when I found everyone was looking at me, and they didn’t seem friendly to me. One woman even spat on me as I walked past. I decided to get off the crowded streets and so I turned down a small, quiet street.

C  During the four-day walking tour, I was amazed by mountain scenery and the ancient ruins we passed on our hike. On the last day, we arrived at the ruins of Machu Picchu in time to see the sunrise over the Andes. I spent the day visiting the ruins of that ancient Inca city before catching the train back to the capital city of the country.

D  When I got off the plane at the first airport, I saw someone handing out cards to some of the passengers, but I didn’t know what they were for, so I didn’t take one. When I tried to board the second plane they asked for my transit card, which I didn’t have. I was worried they were going to send me back to London.

E  I had been walking for about an hour when suddenly I slipped and fell down a riverbank. I hurt my ankle and couldn’t stand up. I didn’t know how I could get back to the village. I hadn’t told anyone where I was going, so no one would know where to look for me when they realized I was missing.

F  When I arrived at my destination, a customs officer at the airport looked in my bag and found the pills in a small box. He wanted to know what the pills were for and why they weren’t in their proper bottle with my name and the doctor’s name on it. I explained that the bottle had been too big and heavy. Then he wanted to know if I had a letter from my doctor explaining about the pills.
