We Americans are wasteful people, not used to saving．Early settlers, our forefathers set us an example of wasting everything, for they thought nature’s resources were so plentiful that none of them ever imagined that natural materials would be used up in time．Within a few years of the first Virginia settlement, for example, pioneers burned down their houses when they were ready to move west．They burned down their houses with only one aim to get the nails(釘子) for future use．No one ever gave a thought to the priceless hardwoods that went up in smoke．As a people we destroy many valuable things that other people save．I noticed this when I was living in Britain．I received a letter from one England’s largest banks．It was enclosed in a used envelope(信封) that had been readdressed to me．Such a practice would be unthinkable in the United States．American banks, even the smallest, always use expensive stationery(信箋)with the names of all twenty-eight vice-presidents lists on side of the page．

given a second chance.
    And parents should be held accountable for their children. That is another reason why there is such a
huge achievement gap. All children should be monitored at home in order to achieve great success in
school. Perhaps it might be a great idea for urban school districts to offer free classes to parents on how
to help their students at home. Of course this idea is far fetched, after all we do not want to offend the
parents. What we will do instead is to spend a fortune on teacher training because if the kids are not
doing well it must be the fault of the teacher. That kind of mindset, if allowed to continue will be a perfect
recipe for greater achievement gaps.
     I started working at my current school in August and I have been in the teaching field for 25 years.
What I believe is that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that  horse drink. You can't
force kids to change bad habits over  night, nor can we afford to lower standards just so a kid can  pass
a class.

     I am an English teacher, with over 15 years' experience of teaching in London. I started
the DailyStep audio email lesson service because I noticed that when I started their English
course, my students' speaking and listening skills were much weaker than their reading and

     I am one of those people who are terrible at saying no. I take on too many projects at once, and
spend too much of my time doing things I'd rather not be doing. I get stuff done, but it's not always the
best I can do, or the best way I could spend my time.
    That's why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter.
    Being a quitter isn't being someone who gives up, who doesn't see important things through to the end.
I desire to be the opposite of that. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there's no
value in what he's doing, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important.
    We get involved in something, realize we don't want to be a part of it, but keep on going. We say
"Well, I've already invested so much time in this, I might as well stick it out." A friend of mine once told
me, "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it."
Odd though it sounds, we all tend to do this.
    I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If
you're reading a book, and don't like it, stop reading. Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to
do is stop before your losses grow even more, and quit. Instead of reading an entire book you hate,
read half of a bad one and half of a good one. Isn't that a better use of your time?
    Step back for a second. Let's learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up
more of our time to do the things we'd like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing.
    Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. But if we do both, we'll start to make
sure that we're spending our time creating value, rather than increasing our losses. Let's be quitters
together.
