【題目】 My husband and I had tried for many years to have children, but it just never happened. So we applied to be foster parents(養(yǎng)父母). We decided we should start with an older child for a number of reasons. Since we both worked, child care might be a problem. Our dog Corby might be a bit too energetic for a young child.1We sat back and prepared to wait for the few months they thought it might take to get a school-age child to pass——which was why we were at a loss when the agency called us within weeks, just before Christmas, and asked if we would take Kaleb, a two-and-a-half-year-old boy, for a few months.

This wasn't what we had discussed a few weeks before.2It was such short notice. We had made holiday plans and most of all, the boy was toddler(初學(xué)走路的孩子)! We went back and forth, and in the end, we just couldn't say no.

The day was set for Kaleb to arrive. We went outside to greet our little guest. But before we could even reach the child, I heard a noise from behind me.3I gasped(因驚異吸氣). Corby would frighten Kaleb——probably even knock him down.

Corby reached Kaleb before either of us could grab her. She hounded up to the boy and immediately began licking his face with joy.4. His face light up with excitement, he cried, "Can this be my dog?

Kaleb came to stay those few months.5Yes, we’adopted Kaleb. He became our son, and Corby…well, she couldn’t have been happier. She turned out to be Kaleb’s dog, after all.

A.Privately, I was full of doubts.

B.There were so many difficulties,

C.Eight and a half years later, he is still with us.

D.Turning, I saw Corby heading straight for the little boy.

E.In our hurry, we must not have closed the door completely.

F.And honestly,we were a little nervous about taking on a baby.

G.In response, this little boy threw his arms around the dog’s neck and turned toward us.

【題目】Tips for Cycle Trips

Cycling has many advantages as a form of travel, as it is the fastest way to travel by human power, and slow enough to allow the type of local involvement that is impossible with powered travel. Cycle travel is a cheap form of transportation.

Distance

On level terrain(地形), without a headwind, a cyclist of average fitness on a touring bike can comfortably cover 60-120km a day. Distances of up to 250km a day are possible, but anything much beyond 120km will require considerable physical tension and not allow many stops to enjoy the places you visit. For many, 80-100km a day will be the most suitable distance to aim for, as it will give a sense of achievement and also leave plenty of time for meals and activities.

Geography

The gradient(坡度)of the trip will reduce your range. A basic rule is that for every 100 metres of altitude you climb, you should add an extra 15 minutes to your journey time. In hilly or mountainous areas, the easiest routes for cycling are downstream along major rivers, as overall they will be downhill. A long, roundabout route along a river will usually be easier than a short, direct route over a hill or mountain pass. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the most scenic routes often come from hilly terrain.

Eat

Food choice depends largely on where you are, so see the respective sections for more information about foods. As you will be working hard, it’s important to get enough energy in your food. On long trips away from major towns, there may be little quality food available, so be prepared to live on candy bars, prepared meat products and the like if the need arises.

Sleep

While you can take a tent with you, many hotels and especially campsites can accommodate cyclists. However, there are also some hotels that may be less used to accommodating cyclists. If you are exploring an unfamiliar place, asking about the accommodation spares you the search for a new place to stay after a long exhausting day of travel.

1Which of the following distance does the author suggest to ordinary cyclists a day?

A.90km.B.50km.

C.130km.D.250km.

2What can we learn from the passage?

A.Cycling over a mountain is challenging but worthy.

B.Hotels seldom provide accommodation for cyclists.

C.High quality food is easy to get on long trips.

D.It takes cyclists 15 minutes to climb 10m of altitude.

3Where can we probably read this passage?

A.In a geography book.B.In a research report.

C.In a travel magazine.D.In a science fiction.

【題目】Five tips for emotional training

Training your children on their emotions(情緒) is the work of those adults who want to nurture(培養(yǎng)) emotional health. I can also say that the best emotional trainings do certain things, which I list as my 'Top Five' pointers, and here they are:

Connect

Be able to see the situation from your children’s perspective(視角). 1. They'll feel you're on their side and you want to understand. Speaking angrily is a sign of disconnection.

2

The calmer we can stay, the better chance our children have of learning how to calm themselves. Of course, there are moments when being calm feels out of the question, which is why learning how to stay calm and centered during an emotional storm is a good practice.

Listen fully

Being able to honestly hear what a child is saying can be important. 3. You are there for them. Even saying 'I'm here for you' can help greatly.

4

Children make mistakes when emotionally triggered(被觸發(fā))-like we all do, especially early on in our development. But the best emotional trainings focus on solving the 'emotional problem' rather than just punishment for a not-so-smart choice.

Learn together

5. We may be learning patience and forgiveness, while our children may be learning how to skillfully handle their big emotions like anger or sadness.

Children are impressionable. I remember being a young child and having a 'flashbulb moment(閃光瞬間) ' when someone said something that changed my mind. I remember everything about that moment for better or worse. So, our aim is to give our children positive flashbulb moments.

A. Be a calming presence

B. Make effective punishment

C. Focus on problem-solving not punishment

D. You can pretend to agree whatever they say

E. This doesn't mean you totally agree, but you hear them

F. We’re always learning alongside our children

G. Putting yourself in their shoes helps build a stronger connection
