Every Wednesday,I go to Cantata Adult Life Services,a local retirement community in Brookfield,Illinois,US,with my classmates to do community service.

Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25—30 students every time.We play board games and cards with the elderly while we’re there.

You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about“l(fā)ife back then”,but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there.Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.

Whether it was talking to 98-year-old“Hurricane Hilda”about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor,I was completely mesmerized by every single memory the elderly wanted to share with me.Even those who don’t have amazing memories make the experience fulfilling(充實(shí)的).I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldn’t recall much about her past, but she told me she’d never forget how kind I was just to listen to her.It made me realize that it’s the little things that make life worth living.

If there’s one thing I’ve realized in my three years of visiting Cantata,it’s that presence——just being there—means more than anything to many of them. And despite how busy our lives are, there’s always time to make someone’s day.

Flying like a bird has been the dream of humans since ancient times. Last week a group of modern birdmen put their courage on their wings and challenged gravity in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

“Yes, you can buy a ticket and fly to another city. But running with your own wings and feeling your feet ready to take off is totally different,” Dong Fang, said in an excited voice. He is one of 41 students from Hangzhou No. 14 Middle School to test their home-made aircrafts in the playground. Inspired by the International Bognor Birdman Competition in the UK, Ni Wangyue, a teacher in high school is holding a similar event. The Bognor Birdman competition started in 1971 in the England coastal city Bognor. People ran off the end of a pier (碼頭) with their own aircraft in an attempt to “fly” the farthest distance.

“From the very beginning , I didn’t expect my students to create a real plane or break any records. I told them the competition is more for seeing how far your imagination can stretch,” Said Ni. He was surprised to see his students create 10 different aircrafts with all kinds of material available in the past month. Many students said that they learnt much more in the process of creating their planes than in ordinary classes.

Jing Yuchen and his team named their plane “Weiming E”, which means an unknown goose. The 17-year-old boy deeply believes their goose of steel pipe and sailcloth will honour its name by successfully making it fly.

“Our work is much more imaginative than others. With several colourful balloons on its back and a pair of light plastic wings, it surely is the most eye-catching work, if not the best,” said Yu Liang, another student.

“Although most of those home-made aircrafts cannot really take the boys flying, the boys’ braveness and creativity in this project will encourage every one of them to fly high in the future,” Ni said.

1.The purpose of the competition is to ___________.

A. prepare to create more real planes.

B. let students break some records.

C. run off the end of a pier.

D. encourage braveness and creativity.

B. A similar kind of competition started in 1971.

C. The teacher didn’t expect his students could create 10 different aircrafts.

D. Most of those home-made aircrafts could take the boys flying.

3. By saying “you can buy a ticket and fly to another city”, the writer actually means ___________.

A. if you want to take part in the competition you have to buy a ticket.

B. people who take part in the competition have to fly to another city.

C. people can pay to get a chance to go to another place by air.

D. the students have to fly to another city in their home-made aircrafts.

4.Why did the teacher organize this activity?

A. He wanted to develop students’ imagination.

B. He wanted his students to have the feeling of flying.

C. He wanted his students to break records.

D. He wanted to increase his students’ grades.

1. . You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how:

1. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. 2. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

2. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

3. Make good use of your time in class. 3. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 4. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆湖北省襄陽(yáng)市四校高三上學(xué)期期中聯(lián)考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Road rage is commonly seen or often happens in our daily lives. There have been countless stories about this new and scary phenomenon, considered a type of aggressive driving. While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as disturbing. For instance, last year alone, 41, 907 people died on the highways. Of those deaths, it’s estimated that about two-thirds were caused at last in part by aggressive driving behavior.

Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now? Experts have several theories, and all are probably partially correct. One suggestion is sheer overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on the roads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35 percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars in the same amount of space; and the problem is magnified in urban areas.

Also, people have less time and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities into the day, stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors, when combined in certain stations, can spell Road Rage.

You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a lower driver, sounded the born long and hard at another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any of these situations, watch out!

Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you, there are things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are easily influenced by road rage, the key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the target of another driver’s rage, do everything possible to get away from the other driver safely, including avoiding eye contact and getting out of their way.

1. Last year on the highways, .

A. approximately two thirds of drivers were killed by road rages

B. road rage remained the No. 1 killer and took 41,907 people’s lives

C. more people were killed by aggressive driving than by drunk driving.

D. drunk driving was a problem more serious than aggressive driving.

2.As a cause of aggressive driving, which of the following is not included?

A. Drivers’ stress and anxiety.

B. Rush hour traffic.

C. Increasing number of cars.

D. Overcrowded roads.

3.Which of the following shows the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. The bad results of road rage

B. How to discharge your emotion properly.

C. The practical ways to escape any fight on roads

D. People easily influenced by road rage
