In a small open courtyard, outside a school building, there were flowers here and there. In the sunshine,a        was lying on the grass, reading a book with        concentration. Near her, another child was carefully watering the flowers, while a third was        with his back against a tree and had a        on his knees. He appeared to be drawing or writing something on it. He was       in his task, like the first child.
the building, there were pleasant carpeted areas. Many children were busy with their tasks in a variety of        while teachers wandered among them, talking to them,        them, and encouraging their efforts.
I watched this scene on a morning in May years ago, it        to me that a visitor here would        have thought he had entered a formal school. He would have been even more      if he had been told that the children he was        came from different kinds of academic levels.
That        has been staying with me ever since. I have been        about some problems. Why in many schools are our children        asked to acquire skills in a way        from a real-life context(情境)? Why does a        school child so often become a defeated school failure?
Developmental psychologist Margaret Donald once said, “      of the intellectual framework (知識框架) on which we        our teaching is misleading.” In my opinion, a child learns everything in human situation. And if every child could learn in the same way as the children in the school I visited, they would develop better.

Mom’s birthday present? It may be a difficult thing for some people, but for me, it is an easy thing. Mom loved flowers, so every year I sent her flowers. Actually she had a bed of irises (鳶尾花) in the backyard of her small, Indiana farm. They were beautiful. “Take some,” she said, “Dig some up and plant them on the side of your own house.”
But in my yard they became lacking in energy. A year passed, then two, but not one flower appeared. I cut back all their green leaves. I was tired of seeing them so lonely. Finally, I dug the irises up and threw them away.
About that time Mom died unexpectedly. My sister and I sold the farm. I never went back to see the irises. I just couldn’t bear seeing another family living in our home—Mom’s home. Autumn came, then winter. The following spring, as Mom’s birthday approached, I struggled with the question of how to remember her. I stared out the window and saw a few stubborn irises in my side yard sprouting (發(fā)芽), —tall, thin but flowerless. Because of seeing them, I decided to order flowers as I always did on Mom’s birthday, and send them to my sister. I wished so badly I could still send flowers to Mom. But that was impossible.
In the morning of Mom’s birthday, I was in my car ready to work. Something in the yard caught my eye. The irises! One had bloomed with flowers, big, showy and purple, as lovely as they ever had been on Mom’s farm. I smiled and turned my eyes upward. I could no longer send flowers to Mom. But somehow, she’d been able to send them to me.

When it was possible, he would spend an hour       to chickens. He viewed the chickens as living persons,       himself to be the person in the speech.
"In the beginning, the chickens looked so      , then they watched me curiously, putting down the food in the mouths and listening to my words. When I was two years old, something happened which I have never forgotten. It was early spring, and there was a light mist over the trees and fields. The other young fellows and I were feeding at the lower end of the field when we heard the distant cry of dogs.
The oldest among us lifted his head to listen. “There are the hounds(獵犬)”, he said, and immediately raced off. The rest of us followed him to the top of the field where we could see several fields beyond.
Soon the dogs were all racing down the field next to ours, making a loud “yoyoyoyo” sound. After then came men on horses, some in green coats. Suddenly, the dogs became silent and ran around with their noses to the ground.
“They’ve lost the smell of the hare.” said the old horse. “Perhaps it will escape.” But the dogs began their “yoyoyoyo” again and came at full speed towards our field. Just then a hare, wild with fear, ran towards the trees. The dogs jumped over the stream and ran across the field, followed by the huntsmen. Six or eight jumped their horses over the stream, close behind the dogs. Before the hare could get away, the dogs were upon her with wild cries. We heard a terrible scream, and that was the end of the hare. One of the men picked her up and held her by the leg. She was covered in blood, but all the huntsmen seemed pleased.
I was so greatly surprised that at first I did not see what was happening by the stream but when I did look, I saw a sad sight. Two fine horses were down, one in the stream struggling to stand up and the other on the grass with one of his legs broken. One rider, who seemed unhurt, was climbing out of the water, but the other lay quite still. “His neck is broken,” said my mother. “I can’t understand why men are so fond of this sport. They often hurt themselves and ruin good horses, all for one hare that they could get more easily in other ways. But we are only horses, and don’t know why men do these things.”
They carried the dead rider to our master’s house, and then came back to the black horse on the grass. The animal was in great pain and one of his legs was broken. Someone ran to our master’s house and came back to the horse with a gun. Soon after there was a loud bang and a terrible cry, and the black horse did not move any more.

A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting (誘人的)apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater,         a bar of chocolate if given the choice,           , as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the         he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
He stood on tiptoe(腳尖),         as high as he could, but even as his tallest           he was unable to touch it. He began to         up and down, as high as he could, at the         of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. Still it remained out of        .
Not giving up, he thought, if only he had something to         on. His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to         the things inside, like his lunch box, pencil case, and Gameboy. Looking        , he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or,         luck, even a ladder, but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use.
He had tried everything he could think to do.         seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk        . At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his        , and how he really wanted that apple. The more he         like this, the more unhappy he became.
, the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t always get what he wanted. He started to say to himself. This isn’t        . I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling miserable as well. There’s         more I can do to get the apple—that is unchangeable—but we are supposed to be able to         our feelings. If that’s the case, what can I do to feel better?

The moment happened 30 yours ago but it was still fresh in my memory. I was a college freshman and had       up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first       of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a      . A few minutes nap(小睡)time before class couldn’t     , I thought.
BOOM! I lifted my head suddenly and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my      beating wildly trying to find the cause of the       . For the next hour I wasn’t sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the      of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. It was instead from the fascinating discussion he led.
