One winter evening, a storekeeper was going to close up  his shop. Suddenly he saw Seth, a lazy, good – for – nothing fellow grasp a pound of fresh butter and hid it in his hat. No sooner had the storekeeper seen the act than he hit upon exactly the right revenge(報(bào)復(fù)). He would punish the thief, and satisfy his own appetite for fun.
Seth had his hat on his head, and the butter in his hat. He was anxious to leave. However, the rightful owner of the butter offered him a cup of hot drink, took him by the shoulders and planted him in a seat close to the stove. The grocer filled in the stove as many sticks of wood as he could. Seth already could feel the butter settling down closer to his hair, so he jumped up, declaring that he must go. “Sit down; don’t be in such a hurry,” replied the grocer, pushing him back into the chair again.
Streak after streak of the butter came pouring from under the poor man’s hat. The fun-loving grocer kept on putting wood into the stove. Then, as if surprised, he remarked, “You seem to be sweating as if you were warm! Let me put your hat away for you.”
“No! ” exclaimed poor Seth at last, unable to stand it a moment longer. “ No, I must go; let me out.” A greasy (油膩的) waterfall of butter was now pouring down the poor man’s face and neck, dipping into his clothes, and trickling down his body into his boots. A.Because he didn’t want to pay for it.

Whether you’re headed to another country for business or pleasure, it is likely that you need to keep in touch with family or business partners in the United States. But if you plan to do that using your cell phone, you could have an unwelcome surprise-U.S. cell phones don’t work abroad. U.S. companies use different forms of technology, not like most of the international community, including Europe.
However, there is an easy, cost-effective solution(方法) to staying in touch while you’re traveling. You Can rent a phone that is guaranteed to work in the countries you’re visiting. Roadpost offers a 30-day cell phone rental plan that includes free incoming calls, free voicemail and call waiting services.
The service is convenient and simple. You can place your order online and your phone will be shipped to arrive on the date you want. If an unexpected business trip comes up, Roadpost can provide next-day delivery for most cities. In addition to the phone, Roadpost provides a spare battery, travel charger and a leather carrying case.
When your phone is shipped from Roadpost, you receive an e-mail confirmation that contains your international cell phone number so you can leave it with family members and business partners; Roadpost even provides business cards preprinted with your international phone number.
Those who don’t want to be without e-mail while traveling can rent an international BlackBerry. It can be hard to stay in touch by e-mail when traveling. If you’re traveling to very remote areas, you may want to consider renting a satellite phone: Because they receive their signals from satellites, these phones work anywhere on the

Computers are helpful because they offer a wide range of functions and services that are not available anywhere else. There are four main uses: word processing, Internet/ communications, digital video/ audio composition, and desktop publishing.
The word processing capabilities of computers are amazing. They can automatically correct your spelling and grammar mistakes. The cutting and pasting features are incredibly simple and very useful for revision. Having a digital backup is an added benefit. All of these things help writers get the job done. With desktop publishing, you can create page layouts(頁(yè)面布局)for entire books on your home computer.
The Internet is one of the greatest inventions created by humans. It is a huge network of computers, each with the ability to contact any of the others. Vast amounts of information can be found on the Internet. It is the ultimate form of media, a combination of newspaper, radio and television. Using the Internet, any two people anywhere can communicate for free, whether it is by text or voice. New uses are being found for the Internet every day.
Audio/ video editing and composition have been made much easier by computers. Cutting and pasting no longer involve using scissors and tape on large reels of film. It no longer costs thousands of dollars of equipment to make a film or to compose music. Now musicians can compose their own songs and publish them without having to obtain a record contract. Film-makers can produce work from their own homes. Anybody who owns a computer can now enter the field of media production.

The part of the earth’s history known as the coal age began more than 250 million years ago and lasted millions of years. During that time, in the area that is now the United States, coal beds formed from Texas to the north Atlantic coast.
At that time thick forests swamps(沼澤) covered much of the earth’s surface. Great trees died and fell into the swamps. Then they rotted (腐爛)and new trees and plants grew on top of them. The process repeated itself for thousands of years. The rotted plants turned into a substance called peat(泥炭), which is still forming today in many swamps.
Meanwhile the land surface was changing. Movement in the earth’s crust (地殼) pushed up hills in some places, while elsewhere land sank. Swift rivers ran from the hills; heavy rains fell and the rivers overflowed, leaving muddy sand in the sunken wooded places and swamps. Oceans, too, poured in over the low-lying land, carrying sand that covered the peaty areas.
The pressure of water and sand pressed the oxygen and hydrogen out of the peat, leaving carbon. Under constant pressure, the rotted material, containing a high percentage of carbon, formed gradually into coal.

A. coal beds in the U.S.   B. earth’s history   C. formation of coal   D. swamp age
57. When plants died, they _____.
A. grew up again       B. fell into the water and rotted
C. fell into coal beds    D. turned immediately to coal
58. Hills were formed as a result of _____.
A. movements of the earth’s crust       B. the remaining from swamps
C. the remaining from swift rivers       D. ocean currents
59. What is implied but not stated in the passage?
A. Peat is still forming today.
B. The formation of coal requires high pressure.
C. The land surface changed during the coal age.
D. The formation of coal was very rapid.

In love, Snoopy is as much of a failure as Charlie Brown is at baseball. He easily falls in love but always has his heart broken. He eats to forget, but it never works.
Snoopy is an insightful(有洞察力的), feel-good and sometimes sad dog. If you think a little about his words, you might find them full of life lessons. Funeral homes aren’t just for dead peopled . They’re for our passed–on pets too these days. Pet Angel Memorial Center in Carmel. Indiana, helps guide grieving (悲痛的)animal owners through a vast range of burial and menorial options . The staff of five, all former clients (顧客), then carries out the owner’s wishes . Perhaps the most important service the center provides, though, is an understanding to cry on .
Owner Coleen Ellis started the country’s first pet funeral home there years ago after the death of her dog Mico. It was then that she discovered her veterinarian(獸醫(yī)), like most throughout the United States, put dead animals in garbage bags and stored them in a freezer for up to one week . A disposal company then picked up the bodies and took them to a landfill(廢物埋填地)site.
Before opening Pet Anget Memorial Center, Ellis worked in human funeral homes for 15 years, helping guide families through the end of life process. Her work with pets, though, is unusual. Only a handful of animal funeral homes exist, most of which Ellis said she helped get started.
Honoring dead pets and honoring people are similar in many ways. The 1,200 square –foot memorial center, located outside of Indianapolis, offer a full line of memorial items . The lowest priced package starts at $ 230  and includes pick-up , as well as a keepsake(紀(jì)念品)paw print. Friends, family and surviving pets often accompany grieving owners.
The atmosphere is different from a human funeral home, where people stay their distance to give the grieving family privacy. At the center , pet owners mourn together . Often times , if two visitations are going on, the families will share stores about their dead loved ones. It’s a very good healing experience.
63.What made Coleen Ellis have the idea of a pet funeral home?

B.The cruel way of dealing with dead pet animal
C.Her determination to change her job
D.Her wish to make friends with pet owners
