While in most present schools it is controversial (有爭議的) whether students should wear uniforms. Most
of elementary schools have taken uniform policy. Uniforms serve students benefits in several ways. First of all,
uniforms act as social equalizers (均衡器). Children often feel less social stress when everyone in the school is
dressed the same way. Students who can not be fashionable due to poverty are made to feel more comfortable
among their classmates. Moreover, wearing uniforms influences students' team spirit. Students are made to
feel as if they are a part of a team by wearing uniforms. In addition, school uniforms would help students in
other ways. Students would not be late for school as often because of the indecision (拿不定主意) about what
to wear in the morning.
However, when the topic comes to high school situation, further details should be carefully examined. The
uniform is not the right answer to different problems that the high school education is facing. Having grown up
already, most students no longer feel that uniforms help them become a part of the school. Furthermore,
uniforms may not save parents as much money as many people think. Many times students don't wear their
school uniforms once they are out of school. Sneakers, jackets, boots and casual clothing will still be needed.
What may first appear to be economical may not be accurate (正確的) in reality.
It seems that the answer to the school uniform debate is not a simple "yes" or"no". There is no clear
consensus (共識) as to the benefits of school uniforms.

The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to
hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude (態(tài)度)
and manners.
A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident (自信的) and
positive attitude.
When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake.
Others don't.
Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture,
use your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. It makes the interviewer
know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you feeling positively about yourself? Your
abilities? Your interest in the job?
Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at
the interviewer. Also, don't say negative things about yourself, or former employer.
Listen to questions carefully. If you don't understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain:
     "I'm sorry, but I didn't catch that."
"I'm not sure exactly what you mean."
Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don't expect you to be totally
calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence
in your ability to do the job.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.
It's a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand.
Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week. Ask if they have made a decision about
the job.
     Good luck!

Dogs may help save the day in the Philippines, as they use their noses to smell out survivors buried by
Friday's mudslide (泥石流). The team of dogs arrived in the Philippines from Spain, and this Tuesday they
were just beginning their work. Search officials told CNN they hoped the recent rain would wash away the
smell of rescue teams so the dogs could do their job more accurately. The dogs were brought in after sound
equipment found sounds coming from deep inside the ruins, at a place where a school stood before the
mudslide covered it. The sounds could mean people are still alive under all the mud or it could just be the earth
resettling.
On Monday, rescue workers worked at the school site until three in the morning, trying to locate survivors,
and they will begin digging again as soon as the dogs think they find someone. Human teams from the US,
Malaysia, and Australia are all trying to help, too. But so far they have yet to locate any survivors. Rescue
workers told CNN that an earlier report that 50 survivors had been found was false.
How did all that mud bury the village in the first place? On Friday, 2,400-foot Mt Kanabag turned into a
mudslide after two weeks of constant rain weakened it. The mountain crumbled and the mud fell onto the
village Guinsaugon, burying the 1,800 people who lived there. Out of the 300 houses in the village, only 3
were not covered by the mud. The village is on a southern Philippine Island called Levte. Rescue efforts have
been difficult because the village takes six hours to reach from the nearest airport. Hopefully, the dogs can
help their human friends find survivors.
1. According to the search officials' words in the first paragraph, we can learn that _____.
[     ]
A. the smell of rescue teams can disturb the dogs
B. the dogs can follow the smell of rescue teams
C. the dogs can't smell the rescue teams
D. the dogs can tell the differences between people and rescue teams
2. The main purpose of this passage is probably _____.
[     ]
A. to show the way to rescue the victims in the ruins
B. to introduce the instruments to save victims in a disaster
C. to tell readers that dogs can smell out victims buried in the ruins
D. to show how to train dogs to save victims in a mudslide
3. How many survivors were found by the dogs?
[     ]
A. 50.
B. Only a few.
C. 1,800.
D. None.
4. The reason why the rescue work wasn't going smoothly was probably that _____.
[     ]
A. the rain was heavy
B. so many people were buried
C. it was difficult to reach the village
D. these is little chance to save the survivors

The word "conservation" has a thrifty (節(jié)儉) meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave
what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition so that others may also share the enjoyment. Our
forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials;
most of them, even until very recently, had this foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and
"inexhaustible".  Most of the citizens or earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated
and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy
condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.
Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry (林地) was a new
idea: timber (木材) was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands;
soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied longterm climatic
cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has
for us today.
For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the
mistakes of our forefathers.Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone's daily life.To
know about the water table (地下水位) in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the
basic mathematic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds need the protection of plant life and
why the running current of streams and river must be made to yield their full benefit to the soil before
