First it was jogging. Then aerobics(有氧運動). Not too long ago, Americans discovered race walking.
Now Americans are into a new fitness craze. They’re taking up bicycling. Over hills and down mountainsides and across quiet country roads, Americans are busily rolling along.
The number of adults who ride for fitness is around 17 million, an increase of 70 percent over four years ago. Twice as many women as men are coming to the sport. Americans are falling in love with biking because it has speed, the benefits of jogging and beautiful scenery.
Bicycling is a very appropriate sport, which is important to people who injured their knees while jogging or whose joints are aching from aerobics. And biking is a real awakening for people who have been into race walking in the past. Race walking is as dull as watching paint dry.
The most popular kind of bicycle for people who are new to the sport is the mountain bike, which has a fixed frame with wide tires and upright handles. Mountain bikes also have many gears(齒輪) to make it easier to climb hills. About 5 million Americans ride mountain bikes, compared with 200,000 who rode them only five years ago.
Costs range from about $130 for a bottom-of-the-line bicycle to more than $2,700 for an expensive bicycle.
Mountain biking has attracted some people who race down the sides of mountains like a bat out of hell. But most riders ride slowly and they rarely venture far from home.
The biking craze has brought an unexpected profit(盈利) to clothing and bicycle accessory(附屬品)makers. Last year, bikers paid $630 million for biking clothes and accessories.
Bicycling seems likely to continue its fantastic growth.

All police officers should be made to take a fitness test every year, with a pay cut for those who repeatedly fail,a review said.
In the Metropolitan Police, more than half(52 percent)of its men officers are over- weight, a fifth (22 percent) are obese, and one in 100 are“morbidly(病態(tài)地)obese".For women officers in the Met,a third(32 percent) are overweight,16 percent are obese and 2 per-cent are morbidly obese.
Tom Winsor, who has carried out the widest-ranging research of police pay and conditions in more than 30 years, said those who fail the test three times should face a pay cut. Chief constables(郡警察局局長)should be able to fire any officer as part of budget cuts, ending a job for life. It also recommended that applicants should be able to enter the police service directly at inspector rank, and,"after strict testing",at superintendent(主管)rank.
Mr Winsor said:“I think the public will be surprised that after passing a fitness test when they join the police, physical fitness is not tested again in a 30,35-year career."
An initial(最初的)yearly test requiring officers to reach level 5’4 on the bleep test should be brought in by September next year. This is equal to an average speed of 8. 8kph(5.5mph) for three minutes 35 seconds,he said. But this should get tougher by September 2018,along similar lines to the test currently used in Northern Ireland. This includes climbing over walls and pulling bodies and was designed to reflect situations which“police officers do and can become involved in".
Mr Winsor expected that many officers would welcome the proposals, saying they would see it“as a necessary protection for themselves and the public".

Some people say that the best way to reduce the size of your waist is to do stomach exercise. Many people believe that when specific muscles are exercised, the fatty tissues (組織) in the immediate area are burned up. The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area. Of course, if you reduce the fat throughout your body, you will certainly see results around your waist too.
Some people believe that you need to exercise twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. However, studies directed by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. Within 48 to 72 hours, you must use the muscles again to reestablish (重建) the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you? American scientists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, exercising every other day or three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness.
Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance? The answer is no. The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter. Of course, if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.
If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within 5 minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much. Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn’t be beating loudly, and you shouldn’t be tired.
1.If you want to reduce the fat around your waist, you should ____.
A.do stomach exercise |
B.exercise the waist |
C.exercise all the muscles of your body |
D.run fast for 30 minutes |

A.we only need to exercise twice a week |
B.we should exercise three times a week |
C.muscles lose their strength after 48 hours |
D.we should exercise every other day, or three days a week |
3.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that _________ .
A.you will lose more weight running one hour than walking one hour |
B.whether you run one mile or walk the same distance, you use the same amount of energy |
C.you will lose more weight running one mile than walking the same distance |
D.both A and B |
4.If you have exercised too much, _______.
A.your breathing will take longer than 5 minutes to return to normal after you finish exercising |
B.your breathing will return to normal within 5 minutes after finishing exercising |
C.your heart will not be beating loudly |
D.you will be too tired to move |
5.This passage tells us that _________.
A.it is better to do more running than walking |
B.the more exercise you do, the healthier you will be |
C.the unexercised muscles must be used again within 48 to 72 hours |
D.in order to lose weight, you have to run fast |
