Many kids go to day camps during summer. Day camps can be a lot of fun, but the activities are familiar. 1. It might take you a little while to get familiar with the place. But you come home every night, just like you do during the school year.

Sleep away camp offers more excitement because you’ll be there all day and night. It’s a kind of vacation, but without your parents. You’ll probably sleep in a tent(帳篷) with other kids attending the camp. Your parents should not worry about your food. 2. Some sleep away camps are for both boys and girls, which means that there are both boys and girls at the camp. 3. Often these all-girl and all-boy camps meet up for some special purposes.

Usually, the camp mails out information to your family before you go. 4. Most of all, you’ll also probably need to bring a health report. Let coaches know about any health problem you have. Just like any vacation, you’ll need to pack a bag full of the clothes. 5. Food is generally provided, but you might need some extra money for snacks or other small expenses(費(fèi)用).

When I began planning to move to Auckland to study, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs and cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism.

Despite these concerns, I came to New Zealand in July 2009. I have found the place and the people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.

Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. However, I received little or no response(回應(yīng)).

One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities(機(jī)會). The people there were very surprised and advised me not to continue my job search in that manner .As I was about to leave, a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what others had said, approached me and asked me to wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, he returned ,He asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. Then he offered to take me to Royal Oak to search for a job.

I was a little surprised, but had a good feeling about him,so I went along. Along the way ,I realized that I had run out of resumes(簡歷). Seeing this, the man stopped at his business partner’s office to make me fifteen extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking and added that I should give him a call if I ever needed anything. I handed out my resume and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.

It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it .And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆江西宜春奉新縣第一中學(xué)高三上第二次月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.

And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes(甜瓜) filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.

As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(燉菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker(高壓鍋)and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.

Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!

Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn’t look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much, edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup.

1.Why did Dad clean Old Man Mocolgin’s chicken house regularly?

A. To earn some money for the family.

B. To collect manure for his crops.

C. To get rid of the terrible smell.

D. To set a good example to us.

2.What can we infer about Dad’s stew?

A. It is popular among the neighbors.

B. It contains honey and vegetables.

C. It looks very wonderful.

D. It tastes quite delicious.

3.What does the underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph mean?

A. To attract B. To upset C. To air D. To shut
