Johann Gutenberg, who worked as a goldsmith (金匠), took what had already been discovered, and created a small invention that changed history. He created a machine that allowed him to move small blocks of letters in such a way that written material could be printed and mass-produced. Few people could read before Guttenberg made the invention, but once books became less expensive, more Europeans could read and write.
Block printing existed long before Gutenberg. The Chinese had been using wood blocks to print books as early as 868, but a new set of woodcuts (木刻印版) had to be made for each book. Producing one book was not easy; producing all kinds of books was more difficult.
Writing ink dates from about 2500 BC in Egypt and China. Gutenberg used an oil-based printing ink that would last longer than other inks used in his time. We don’t know much about Gutenberg because he was not famous during his lifetime. He was born in Germany about 1400. In 1448, Gutenberg developed signatures for each number, letter, and punctuation mark (標點符號). He then built the molds (模型) to hold the signatures in place. Gutenberg published the first mass-produced book: a 1,282 page Bible. To this day, more copies of the Bible have been printed than any other book.
Copies of Gutenberg’s invention spread throughout Europe, but the German goldsmith did not get rich from his invention. Some officials denounced the invention of printing because they feared that it would spread bad ideas. By 1500 there were 1,700 printing presses in Europe. The presses had already produced about 20 million volumes (冊) of 40,000 different books.

With his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, Jeremy Lin (林書豪) finished the New York Knicks' dramatic reversed(扭轉) victory to defeat the Toronto Rapters.

The Knicks have won six games in a row, and Jeremy Lin has put up impressive numbers during the continuous period of competitions. Although the season is still young, the Knicks have reversed course in just one week from the NBA's most disappointing team to a playoff (季后賽) contestant. Lin, not team's high-paid stars, has saved the Knicks season and likely coach D'Antoni's job.

After nearly 15 years of disappointing, sometimes unsuccessful seasons, Madison Square Garden is alive again, and New York City can't stop talking about the Knicks. To put things into perspective(角度), consider this: Just several years back, Knicks fans protested nightly outside of the Garden calling for the team's ownership to fire their resented coach Isiah Thomas.

Now, Madison Square Garden Co. shares are at a record high, the Knicks' average household television rating is up 70 percent since Lin joined the starting lineup (首發(fā)陣容), and jersey sales are increasing very quickly. I watched the Knicks-Lakers game at a bar in Harlem, and have not felt that kind of energy from fans since the great playoff between the Knicks and Miami Heat in the late 1990s.

Beyond the Knicks, Lin may be saving the NBA as well. Just a few months back, the NBA took a massive credibility(威信)hit during a multi-month lockout(停工), where the owners did not allow the players to go back to play until they accept the new salary levels. As a consequence, the season did not even begin until Christmas Day. Over the past few years, LeBron James' (勒布朗﹒詹姆斯) relatively long and unpleasant free-agent (自由職業(yè)球員) events, combined with poor play around the league, have angered fans and damaged the league's brand.

Lin is leading a one-week NBA basketball revival. His legendary story has inspired Asian-Americans, increased NBA sales in China, and turned the basketball world upside down.

1.The passage is mainly about______

A. why the New Yorkers thought well of Jeremy Lin

B. why Jeremy Lin became a member of the Knicks

C. how the Knicks defeated its opponents in a great playoff

D. how Jeremy Lin saved the Knicks, probably including the NBA

D. Madison Square Garden Co.’s shares

3.The underlined word “young” in Paragraph 2 probably means "______"

A. not old yet.  B. not completely grown.

C. in the development  D. in the early stage

4.The NBA suffered the credibility crisis months ago because____

A. The NBA delayed the season because of players’ wage disagreements

B. the NBA was disappointed at James’ free-agent event.

C. The NBA canceled the basketball match for the coming Christmas

D. James had a bad performance in the basketball court

5.Which one of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. These Knicks’ stars who were paid well saved the Knicks season

B. The Knicks didn’t satisfy its fans for nearly 15 years until this season

C. The fans objected to dismissing Coach Isiah Thomas outside the Garden

D. The owners and the players didn’t agree on raising the TV ratings

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self – worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life – and – death affairs. In their single – minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self – respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

1.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Competition helps to set up self – respect.

B.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

C.Opinions about competition are different among people.

D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition

2.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A.It improves personal abilities.              B.It builds up a sense of duty.

C.It pushes society forward.                 D.It encourages individual efforts.

3.The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ___________.

A.those who try their best to win

B.those who value competition most highly

C.those who rely on others most for success

D.those who are against competition most strongly.

4.Which point of view may the author agree to?

A.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

B.Competition should be encouraged.

C.Winning should be a life – and – death matter.

D.Every effort should be paid back.

The scientific world continues to be amazed by the speed of the development of cloning. Some scientists now suggest that the cloning of humans could occur in the near future. Despite the benefits of cloning, however, certain ethical (道德的) questions concerning the possible abuse (濫用) of cloning have been raised. At the heart of these questions is the idea of humans influencing life in a way that could harm society, either morally or in a real physical sense. Some people object to cloning because it allows scientists to "act like God" in the handling of living organisms.

The cloning of Dolly raised the debate over this practice to a whole new level. It has become obvious that the technology for cloning Dolly could also be used to clone humans. A person could choose to make two or ten or a hundred copies of himself or herself by the same techniques used with Dolly. An active debate about the morality of cloning humans arises. Some people see benefits from the practice, such as providing a way for parents to produce a new child to replace one dying of a fatal disease. Other people worry about humans taking into their own hands the future of the human race.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, many scientists say the controversy over the ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because of the unpredictability (不可預測性) of cloning in general. While scientists have cloned animals such as sheep, mice, cows, pigs, and goats, fewer than 3 percent of all those cloning efforts have succeeded. The animal clones that have been produced often have health problems. Scientists believe the rapid reprogramming in cloning can introduce random (任意的) errors into a clone’s DNA. Those errors have altered individual genes in minor ways, and the genetic defects (缺陷) have led to the development of major medical problems. Some scientists say this should make human cloning out of the question, but others argue that cloning humans may actually be easier and safer than cloning animals. Whatever, I agree that further research in the field of cloning is needed.

1.Some people are against cloning of humans because they think _________.

A.the practice takes too much time and money  B.the cloning technology is still not mature  C.humans control the future of the human race           D.the population in the world will be too large

2.Some scientists think the debate over ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because ____.

A.cloning of human beings is completely impossible                  B.the result of cloning can’t be predicted in general                    C.cloning of animals is a failure               D.there are big errors in a clone’s DNA

3.We can learn from the text that _______.

A.cloning of humans is a very controversial issue B.the cloning of Dolly begins to raise the debate over cloning of humans    C.there are medical problems in cloning animals         D.cloning humans is easier and safer than cloning animals

4.The text is mainly about _______.

A.the benefits of cloning                   B.the ethics of cloning C.the history of cloning  D.the defects of cloning
