Cyberspace, data superhighway, multimedia, for those who have seen the future, and the linking of computers, televisions and telephones will change our lives for ever.Yet for all the talks of a forthcoming technological utopia, little attention has been given to the implications of these developments for the poor.As for all the new high technology, the West concerns itself with the “how”,while the question of “for whom” is put aside once again.

Economists are only now realizing the full extent to which the communication revolution has affected the world economy.Information technology allows the extension of trade across geographical and industrial boundaries, and transnational corporations take full advantage of it.Terms of trade and exchange, interest rates and money movements are more important than the production of goods. The electronic economy made by information technology allows the haves to increase their control on global markets — with a destructive impact on the have??nots.

For them the result is unstable.Developing countries which rely on the production of a small range of goods for export are made to feel like small parts in the international economic machine. As “futures” are traded on computer screens, developing countries simply have less and less control of their destinies.

So what are the options of regaining control? One alternative for developing countries is to buy in the latest computers and telecommunications.Yet this leads to long-term dependency and perhaps permanent constraints on developing countries’ economies.

Communication technology is generally exported from the US,Europe or Japan;the patents, skills and ability remain in the hands of a few industrialized countries. It is also expensive, therefore imported products and services must be bought on credit usually provided by the very countries whose companies stand to gain.

From the passage we know that the development of high technology is in the interests of________.

A.the rich countries                               B.scientific development

C.the local elites                                     D.the world economy

It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.international trade should be expanded

B.the interests of the poor countries have not been given enough consideration

C.the exports of the poor countries should be increased

D.communication technology in developing countries should be modernized

Why does the author say that the electronic economy may have a destructive impact on developing countries?

A.Because it enables the developed countries to control the international market.

B.Because it destroys the economic balance of the poor countries.

C.Because it violates the national boundaries of the poor countries.

D.Because it inhibits the industrial growth of developing countries.

The development of modern communication technology in developing countries may________.

A.hinder their industrial production

B.cause them to lose control of their trade

C.force them to reduce their share of exports

D.cost them their economic independence

The author’s attitude towards the communication revolution is________.

A.positive                                              B.critical

C.indifferent                                          D.tolerant

A. Necessity for developing adult education

B. Early days of adult education

C. Ways of receiving adult education

D. Growth of adult education

E. Institutions of adult education

F. Functions of adult education

1.Voluntary learning in organized courses by mature men and women is called adult education. Such education is offered to make people able to enlarge and interpret their experience as adults. Adults may want to study something which they missed in earlier schooling, get new skills or job training, find out about new technological developments, seek better self—understanding, or develop new talents and skills.

2.This kind of education may be in the form of self-study with proper guidance through the use of libraries, correspondence courses, or broadcasting. It may also be acquired collectively in schools and colleges, study groups, workshops, clubs, and professional associations.

3.Modern adult education for large numbers of people started in the 18th and 19th centuries with the rise of the Industrial Revolution. Great economic and social changes were taking place: people were moving from rural areas to cities; new types of work were being created in an expanding factory system. These and other factors produced a need for further education and re-education of adults.

4.The earliest programs of organized adult education arose in Great Britain in the 1790s, with the founding of an adult school in Nottingham and a mechanics’ institute in Glasgow. The earliest adult education institution in the United States was founded by Benjamin Franklin and some friends in Philadelphia in 1727.

5.People recognize that continued learning is necessary for most forms of employment today. For example, parts of the adult population in many countries find it necessary to take part in retraining programs at work or even to learn completely new jobs. Adult education programs are springing up constantly to meet these and other needs.

Oxford is a very old town on the River Thames, about 60 miles from London. Unlike modern university towns, where you usually find the university on the edge of the town, or on its own campus(校園), Oxford’s center is the university; and around the crossroads at the very heart of Oxford, Carfax, there are grey stone colleges and other university buildings. In the center you can also find interesting old restaurants. There are a lot of churches, and few really large and interesting buildings, such as Ashmolean Museum, the round library, the Bodleain and the Radcliff Camera. Like all English towns, there are parks. The Parks is the home of university cricket(板球). In the summer months, as you leave the center and go towards the edge of Oxford you can see industrial areas in one direction; and in another, beautiful suburbs(郊區(qū)).
