Do your spirits soar (猛增) on a sunny day? Do you relax at the sound of flowing water?
Some scientists suggest that these contacts with nature are good for your health. In one study, hospital patients with a view of trees had shorter hospital stays and less need for pain medications. Another study indicated that prisoners with a view of the outdoors had fewer doctor visits.
“Why do we desire nature? Maybe we’re programmed to need it, since our ancestors’ survival was so dependent on their connection with nature,” suggests biologist E.O. Wilson.
Want to find out if contact with nature improves your outlook on life? Try a few of these ideas.
Hang out a bird feeder and watch the birds that visit it.
Sit down in the backyard or a nearby park. Close your eyes. What do you hear? Birds singing? The wind in the trees? Crickets (蟋蟀) chirping?
Find an anthill. Sit down and watch the ants work.
Take a walk right after a rainstorm. What looks different? Smells different?
Go barefoot on a sandy beach.
Open the curtains and the window, if the weather allows it.
On a windy day, watch the trees.
Go to a creek, river or park fountain. Listen to the sound of water in motion.
Camp out in the backyard or at a nearby state park. Use a tent or sleep on the ground.
Find a wide-open space to study the stars. Learn about the different constellations (星座).
Raise a garden. Or plant some seeds in a flowerpot.
Go hiking with your family. Talk about all of the colors you see in nature.

Winter in the north is usually very cold and it is important to avoid colder-related injuries such as frostbite(凍傷) and hypothermia(體溫降低).Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long.It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose, and ears and some will bring permanent damage.Hypothermia is a serious medical condition caused by serious cold.It happens when the body cannot produce as much heat as it loses. If not treated,it can be deadly.
The best way to avoid cold-related injuries is to be prepared for the outdoors. Here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm.Think of COLD.
The C stands for cover.Wear a hat and scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck, and ears. And wear mittens instead of gloves.Mittens are a type of glove that does not have separate parts for each finger.Gloves may not keep hands as warm because they separate the fingers.
The O stands for overexertion(過分用力).Avoid activities that will make you sweaty.Wet clothes and cold weather are a bad mix.
L is for layers.Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than single heavy layer clothing. Also, make sure outerwear is made of water resistant and tightly knit material.
The last letter D stands for dry.In other words, stay as dry as possible.Pay attention to the places where snow can enter, like the tops of boots.the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens.
And there are a couple of other things to keep in mind, one for children and the other for adults.Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the body's temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm, but what it really does is weaken the body's ability to hold heat.

Dear Kind-Trustee-Who-Sends-Orphans-to-College,
Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train. It’s a funny feeling, isn’t it? I never rode in one before.
College is the biggest, most puzzling place—I get lost whenever I leave my room. I will write you a description later when I'm feeling less confused; also I will tell you about my lessons. Classes don't begin until Monday morning, and this is Saturday night. But I wanted to write a letter first just to get acquainted.
It seems strange to be writing letters to somebody you don't know. It seems strange for me to be writing letters at all—I've never written more than three or four in my life, so please overlook it if these are not a model kind.
Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I had a very serious talk. She told me how to behave all the rest of my life, and especially how to behave towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for me. I must take care to be very respectful.
But how can one be very respectful to a person who wishes to be called John Smith? Why couldn't you have picked out a name with a little personality? I might as well write letters to Dear Flagpole or Dear Clothes-line.
I have been thinking about you a great deal this summer; having somebody take an interest in me after all these years makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems as though I belonged to somebody now, and it's a very comfortable feeling. I must say, however, that when I think about you, my imagination has very little to work upon. There are just three things that I know: I, You are tall. Ⅱ. You are rich. Ⅲ. You hate girls.
I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only that's rather rude to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but that's rude to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Besides, being rich is such a very external quality. Maybe you won't stay rich all your life; lots of very clever men get broke in Wall Street. But at least you will stay tall all your life! So I've decided to call you Dear Daddy-Long-Legs. I hope you won't mind. It's just a private pet name we won't tell Mrs. Lippett.
The ten o'clock bell is going to ring in two minutes. Our day is divided into sections by bells. We eat and sleep and study by bells. It's very lifeful. There it goes! Lights out. Good night.
Observe how precisely I obey rules--due to my training in the John Grier Home.
Yours most respectfully,
Jerusha Abbott
to Mr. Daddy-Long-Legs Smith
1.Jerusha felt “confused” because ______.
A.she had never written to the trustee before
B.she was not familiar with the college yet

2.Jerusha thought that she couldn’t be very respectful to “John Smith” because _______.
A.he was a total stranger to her
B.she was sure it was a false identity
C.the name was too common
D.nobody would like to be called that name
3.The fact that her day is “divided into sections by bells” makes Jerusha feel______.
A.busy B.restricted by rules C.pressed for time D.full of energy
4.Jerusha decided to call the trustee Dear Daddy-Long-legs______.
A.in order to show her respect for him
B.because it was one of his inner quality
