We arrived in Spain for the _36_ time a few weeks ago and I decided to buy a car because we had sold _37_ we had in England before leaving. Yesterday the _38_ office rang us to tell the car was ready. We paid for the car and _42_ the papers. They told us there was enough _43_ to take us to a garage, where we could fill up. (加油)The nearest garage to the _44_ was about 100 yards away and we got there _45_ .But when I turned into the main road I suddenly saw a lot of _46_ racing towards me .I got out of their way as _47_as I could by backing into the garage once more and the man behind _48_ at me . “It’s such a _49_ to remember to drive on the right, isn’t it?” My wife said.“Yes, if only I had _50_ a few lessons for practice,” I replied . “You’d better go carefully on the way_51_ ,” my wife said. “You ’d be _52_ if you had an accident _53_ the first day, wouldn’t you ?” While we were talking, the man behind _54_ out of his car and said in good English, “Would you mind telling me when you are thinking of leaving , _55_ are you going to sit in your car all the day?”

"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood. The happy childhood is hardly worth your while. "Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood. And worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." That was Frank McCourt reading the opening lines of his book Angela's Ashes, released in nineteen ninety-six.
This Irish American author best known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography Angela's Ashes that recorded his poor upbringing, died of cancer on Sunday, The New York Times reported. He was 78.
Born in New York City, he was the eldest of seven children born to Irish immigrant parents. Angela's Ashes was a memoir that captured an irresponsible, drunkard father with a gift for story-telling. When not drunk, his father was absent, turning his back on a family so poor, McCourt wrote, that they were reduced to burning the furniture in their rented hut to keep warm. His mother struggled to raise her many children after his father left the family.
Already struggling when the Great Depression hit, the family moved back to Limerick, where they slipped ever deeper into poverty in the  1930s.
Three of McCourt's siblings died of diseases worsened by hunger and the wretchedness of their surroundings. McCourt himself almost died of typhoid(傷寒的) fever as  a child.
In Angela's Ashes, he wrote of hunger, a home flooded with rainwater and the unbearable humiliation of seeking handouts from charities in the Irish city. But he told the story in a way that is expressive, warm and light-hearted.
Frank McCourt left Ireland at the age of nineteen to return to New York City where he was born. He earned a degree in- English education and taught creative writing for nearly thirty years. After retiring in nineteen eighty-seven, he decided to write about his childhood. "Angela's Ashes" became a huge success and brought McCourt a 1997 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and other honors. Millions of copies of the book were sold worldwide and it was adapted into a 1999 movie starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle.

Improving the health of the populations,he says, has proven to be an essential method in helping poor countries to be financially successful.“National borders allow inequalities,”said Gates.“We all need  to take a more global view, rather than just saying my country is doing well.We have to step up these health issues, knowing how few resources are going into them.”
Gates said that both his parents set up an example for him as a child. His father,William H.Gates, was the head of the local Planned Parenthood, and his mother,Mary, volunteered for the United Way.As he gathered his fortune,Gates knew he would finally want to give back as well, but he didn’t expect to devote himself whole?heartedly to one project until he was about 60.

Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. "Football, tennis, cricket — anything with a round ball, I was useless." he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man's cold-water exploits (成就). Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.
Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. "John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say, 'You are completely crazy,'" Saunders says.
In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a closer encounter (遭遇) with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.
This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.
小題1:The turning point in Saunders'life came when ________.
