What can you do to make sure your car isn’t stolen? Well, first and most obviously, lock the car when you leave it. That includes locking the boot for luggage and closing all the windows. Even a tiny break allows a thief to insert a wire to force open the lock button. Of course, don’t leave the keys hanging in the ignition(點火器). And don’t hide a spare key inside or outside the car - thieves know all the hiding places. If your car breaks down, lock up before you go for help. Even if you can’t start the car, a thief may be able to. Now since chances of losing cars are greater from dusk to mid-night, make sure you park in a well-lighted area, preferably where there are plenty of passers-by, say, near a busy store or a restaurant. Avoid leaving your keys with a garage or parking-lot assistant: choose the place you park yourself. Keep your driver’s license in your wallet or purse, not in the separate divisions of your car. You should also have a record of your car’s vital statistics both in your wallet and somewhere at home. This can help with recovery in case of stealing. And finally, it’s a good idea to fix some kind of safety devices. There is a range available from alarm systems that set off a siren(警報)if an attempt is made to interfere with the car in any way, to fuel shut-off systems and time delay ignition systems. Displaying a warning sign will also help discourage would-be thieves. They don’t want to waste time on trying to steal a protected car. So, help yourself put car thieves out of business by always locking your car, fixing anti-stealing systems and co-operating with the police by reporting any attempt at stealing. Put car thieves out of 1

Goals are the guides all through our life. We all have goals that we are moving towards and making a great effort to achieve. This is a good thing. Or can it be bad? How many of us never reach our goals and yet we have tried so hard and really thought about nothing else? I believe the mistake most of us make is that we do not focus on our present situation. Let me explain. Most of us see our present situation as a stepping stone that we use simply as a means of reaching our final destination. We don't take time to truly appreciate where we are today and all the great things we already have in our lives. We should focus our attention on the journey and not on the destination, or we will miss the beautiful scenery along the way. Let's use our job as an example. Now most of us want a promotion. We have plans to become the manager or general manager in our companies. Unfortunately, most of us will never reach the goal, but will watch others achieve our goal instead. What we should be doing is focusing on the job we are currently in now. Forget where we want to get to and just focus on the present. You see, what we can control is our performance in our current job. We can decide to be the best we possibly can in our current job. Now this may mean further education to have the skills we currently do not have. It may mean working harder to produce better results than our colleagues. It could simply be a change of attitude, such as stopping complaining and becoming a more devoted and supportive employee. By doing our current job to the best of our abilities, we in fact give ourselves the best chance of promotion. So the best thing for all of us to do to achieve our goals is to just focus on what we have and where we are now. Do the best and be the best we possibly can in our current situations, and we will give ourselves the very best chance of reaching our goals in the future. We have heard the old sayings and they are true: "Rome wasn't built in a day.", "Patience is a virtue", and so on. Have patience, have appreciation of what we already have, and take time to help ourselves be the very best we can. Do these things and we will all reach our goals, but more importantly, we will enjoy our life every day. | ||||||||||

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據(jù)所讀內(nèi)容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一個最恰當(dāng)?shù)膯卧~。
注意:每個空格只填1個單詞。
You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream” caused the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname(綽號) of the “Golden State”.
The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors (淘金者) but also waves of immigrants throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most, instead, worked as railroad labourers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name “the old gold hill”.
In the 20th century, some critics (評論家) said that it was no longer possible to become rich through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination (歧視) almost made the American Dream a nightmare (噩夢).
Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortunes in America.
Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to use money with a plan, protect the environment, raise the quality of life, and promote social justice.
The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has become the model of the new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a movie superstar and then governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.
